Joseph Tierney Grand Marshal Father Joseph Tierney became part of the family of the people of Mahopac and Putnam County when he served his first years as a priest at the parish of St. John the Evangelist in Under the cheerful guidance of Bishop James Mahoney, Pastor, and Sister Mary Judith and Sister Anne, Principal and Teacher of St. John's School, Father Tierney joined in many of the activities of the Parish, the School, and the surrounding town of Mahopac. In fact, he was joyfully involved in activities throughout Putnam and Westchester. Father Tierney, having been raised in a large and loving family, was gifted in passing on that love of family to St. John's and the surrounding area. He was born in Staten Island, the sixth child of seven. His parents, James (still of Staten Island) and Doris ( now enjoying Heaven), taught him to give generously and to bring joy to his journey through life. He graduated from St. Sylvester's Grammar School, St. Peter's Boys High School, and St. Peter's College. He was called to the Priesthood and entered St. Joseph's Seminary in September Ordained a priest in November, 1986, he then arrived at St. John's in Mahopac to serve his first priestly assignment. Many of the people of Mahopac and Putnam/Westchester welcomed him and during the six years he served here and lived among us, he became a much admired and loved member of our families. He was with the children and staff of St. John's for part of every school day and his laughter was often heard echoing in the hallways; he was involved with the Parish Youth Group and led them in many activities and outings. The young people of the parish gathered at Sunday evening Mass and often met to work together on activities and events that served the community, the parish, and other teens. These events included visiting nursing homes, Retreats for teens, sponsorship for needy children, unforgettable ski trips, ice hockey games on frozen Lake Mahopac, and parish picnics. Doing all this with the Bishop and the Sisters, Father Tierney taught the people of Mahopac that social events and charitable events could build a loving family spirit. Although Father Tierney went on to other assignments, first as a teacher at Archbishop Stepinac High School, then as Vocation Director for the Priesthood of the Archdiocese of NY, and now as President of Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx (a position he has been honored to fill since 2005), his spirit and kindness as a family member in Mahopac is well remembered. He returns here frequently to officiate at Weddings, at Baptisms, and at Final Farewells. It is with great pleasure that the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and all members of the Northern WestchesterPutnam St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, welcome Father Joseph Tierney as our Grand Marshal for
