Why did God give us free will? Although we just finished Lent, we re still often called upon to think of the areas in our lives where we need to be forgiven; after all, we should always embrace reconciliation and reflection. It can become easy to think during all of this reflecting, Why didn t God just make us perfect? I don t want to hurt Him, so why doesn t He just not allow us to sin? That way, there wouldn t be all of the problems that the world has today. The answer is actually quite simple, but profound God gave us free will out of a desire for love. The first line of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the guideline for many major Church teachings, states that God, infinitely perfect and blessed in Himself, in a plan of sheer goodness, freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life (CCC 1). A simpler way of saying this is that God already had everything He needed without us (He s perfect), but He created us out of love, to share in His heavenly life and love. Now as a benevolent Father, you d think He d make us perfect so we could already share in that life, right? But He doesn t. The key is that without free will, our love would be forced. In real life, love is a choice; we sometimes show our love for our spouses, children, parents, and friends very well (sacrificially) but other times not so much. However, when we love well, it is our free choice and active decision, even when it means sacrificing our own wants or needs. In the same way, God longs for that same kind of love from us. Thus, if He were to have made us perfect, our love would be forced and therefore not true love. We can never please God more than when we show Him true love by using the gift of our free will to choose Him and His will, even when it s difficult. * * * In our weekly Did you know? section, we ll try to explain mysteries of the Mass and other parts of the Catholic faith. Cardinal Sarah said these words during a March 25 th lecture on the feast of the Annunciation. March 25 th also marks the International Day of the Unborn Child. If one really wants to attack the Son of man, Jesus Christ, there is only one way: To attack the sons of men. Christianity is the only religion that says Your model is a child, the child of Bethlehem. When you have been taught to despise the child, there will be no Christianity in this country. Let us pray that life is promoted and protected from conception to natural death. 8 NOTICIAS DE NUESTRA PARROQUIA Hoy es Domingo de la Divina Misericordia (Fin de la Octava Pascual - Jesús, en Ti confío!) Aleluya! Cristo ha resucitado! Por la iniciativa del Papa San Juan Pablo II, celebramos el Segundo Domingo de Pascua con tema de la devoción mundial a la Divina Misericordia, según la imagen, la Novena y la Coronilla propagada por la santa polaca Sta. María Faustina Kowalska en siglo XX. Ojalá que algunos feligreses hayan rezado la Novena desde Viernes Santo y cumplido con las condiciones para conseguir una indulgencia plenaria hoy día, o sea, borrar posiblemente todo el tiempo en el purgatorio merecido por los pecados cometidos y perdonados en la confesión sacramental por alguien que cumple con todas las condiciones de esta indulgencia mediante la Novena (vb. rezar la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia por las meditaciones de la Novena, confesarse, comulgar, rezar por las intenciones de Santo Padre, S.S. Papa Francisco y desatarse de todo afecto por sus pecados del pasado). Aunque es difícil conseguir una indulgencia plenaria, sin embargo vale la pena intentar porque les posible lograr una indulgencia parcial, que reduciría el tiempo en el purgatorio por los pecados cometidos en vida y perdonados en el Sacramento de la Confesión. No obstante si haya rezado la Novena o no, nuestra parroquia nos invita a una celebración especial de la Divina Misericordia (pero sin Misa) en la capilla a las 15h del domingo, 23 de abril. Felices Pascuas Floridas! Aunque la Octava Pascual, o sea el periodo de ocho días que la Iglesia celebra litúrgicamente Domingo de Pascua consecutivamente, acaba este año el 23 de abril, la Iglesia sigue con la temporada de Pascua por un total de 50 días, que incluye la Solemnidad de la Ascensión el jueves, 25 de mayo (que es día de precepto), hasta Domingo de Pentecostés, o sea este año el 4 de junio. En el boletín anterior, Padre Rojas nos explicó lo que es nuestro Deber Pascual, según las normas de la Iglesia. También agradeció a tantas personas y tantos grupos que colaboraron hacia la primera Semana Santa con un horario completo de programación hispana en los 128 años de la parroquia de San Juan Evangelista en Mahopac, Nueva York.
