3 BOOK OF THE MONTH NIGHT S BRIGHT DARKNESS By Sally Read Staunchly atheist Sally Read converted to Catholicism in the space of nine electric months. In 2010, Read was heralded as one of the bright young writers of the British poetry scene. Feminist and deeply anti-catholic, she was writing a book about female sexuality when, during her research, she spoke with a Catholic priest. The interview led her on a dramatic spiritual quest that ended up at the Vatican itself, where she was received into the Catholic Church. Available in our bookstore. LENTEN SPIRITUALITY Come join us for three enriching nights where we ll explore the pillars of Lent set forth by the Ash Wednesday Gospel reeading: prayer, fasting, & almsgiving. The classes are free of charge and will be held in the Welcome Center at 7:10pm. March 20 - Eat (Less) March 27 - Pray (More) April 3 - Love (Big) To enroll, pelase call or visit our website at lasalette-shrine.org HOUSE OF DISCERNMENT DONATIONS NEEDED! Next month, the La Salette will be opening a house of discernment to serve as a place where young men can come to pray and experience life as a religious in order to further help them decide whether to pursue religious life. Before it opens, however, we need your help! The following items are needed for the house. Any donations are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance! -Flatscreen TV and wall mount -Keurig coffee machine -Microware -Fridge -4 Chairs -Small table -Cabinet SACRAMENT OF THE SICK Wednesday April 12, 2017 At the 12:10pm in the Shrine Church In the letter of St James, we are told that if people are sick, they should see the priests and let the priests pray over them and anoint them with oil. We invite all people who are of advanced age, facing an operation, or suffering from a serious illness to join us for this encounter with the healing Christ. The Sacrament will be administered within the Mass. Feel free to bring your relatives or friends who could benefit from this sacrament. LA SALETTE FAMILY MINISTRY (KOINONIA) March 11, 2017 from 10am - 4pm Koinonia, taken from the Greek word meaning community, is a family oriented program aimed at fostering both community and friendship through outdoor excursions for your entire family. The Cliff Walk along the eastern shore of Newport, RI is world famous as a public access walk that combines the natural beauty of the Newportshoreline with the architectural history of Newport s gilded age. Please make your booking for our March excursion, NO LATER THAN March 4, 2017 by calling LA SALETTE YOUTH MASS March 12, 2017 at the 12:10pm Mass featuring: THE REVIVE MINISTRY BAND All middle school and high school youth are invited to attend! 4 2017 LA SALETTE MOVIE FESTIVAL Beyond the Walls: Building Spaces of Reconciliation Nowadays we live in a very polarized culture and society. On the one hand we live in a global community: both web networks and social media allow us to communicate in real time with the four corners of the world. On the other hand, we constantly witness an insurgence of different forms and ways of both radicalisms and fundamentalisms (political, ideological, racial, religious and more). In our current context, what does it take to build islands of communion and reconciliation rather than walls and barriers of division and exclusion? These are the questions we invite you to explore through the La Salette 2017 Movie Festival, with 8 screenings, the last Friday of every month, the next of which will be on March 31, 2017 from 7:15-9:00pm. March s movie will be the hit movie Romero which chronicles the life of Blessed Oscar Romero. Archbishop Romero (Raul Julia) is reluctant to get involved in a war that rages on between the military elite and guerrilla Marxists in his country of El Salvador. As conditions worsen and more churches are desecrated, he finds he cannot remain an observer. So Romero resorts to what he knows best: making speeches. The tenets he preaches are simply freedom and justice, but even so, he is seen as dangerous by the government and they are ready to retaliate. All are invited to join us for this FREE event! Please call for more information or visit our website at ASH WEDNESDAY IS March 1, 2017 Distribution of ashes at the 12:10pm & 6:30pm Masses On February 25, after the 4:30pm Mass, we will be burning palms! Please bring your palms from last Palm Sunday to Mass! 2017 DAY OF PRAYER FOR WOMEN 9:30am - 12:00pm in the Retreat Center - Cost: $20/session March 15, God s Infinite Love and Mercy This series of mini-retreat days will provide an opportunity to enjoy some quiet time of prayer and reflection. The day will include a brief presentation, time for private prayer, and faith sharing. There will be an opportunity for spiritual direction for those who wish. Please visit our website for more information. We at the Shrine are grateful for the generosity of so many who make our work possible. We depend on your goodness. 6 Make Your Weekly Offering Online Although not everyone buys things online many people do. For those of you who do, we will begin to offer online giving for your regular donation. In addition to the basket system you will now be able to select an amount you would like to give to the Shrine each week, set it, and forget about it. This amount will be put on your charge card or taken right from your bank account like other automated giving. We are now using a very secure system called the E-Catholic/Blue Pay System. Its security is twice that of Amazon and Paypal and use of this method has several advantages for both you and the Shrine. After enrolling, you ll no longer have to remember to get your money ready at home or stop at the ATM before coming to Mass. You also won t have to search to find the pen to make out a check. If you forget to bring your money, you can still make a one time donation on your phone. We ll even give you a coupon so you still have something to put in the basket so you don t feel guilty when the basket is passed. With Blue Pay, you will also be able to register and buy tickets to different events for events at the Shrine online! Of course we ll still take cash in the basket and candle money at the front desk. SNACK BAR OPEN YEAR ROUND Wednesday to Sunday - 12:00-4:30PM RELIGIOUS ARTICLES & BOOKSTORE The La Salette Religious Articles and Bookstore is the perfect place to find a gift for every occasion!
