3 Reflection Prayer for Confidence in God By St. Claude de la Colombierè All Saints' Day is a solemn holy day of the Catholic Church celebrated annually on November 1 st. The day is dedicated to the saints of the Church, that is, all those who have attained heaven. It should not be confused with All Souls' Day, which is observed on November 2 nd, and is dedicated to those who have died and not yet reached heaven. Although millions, or even billions of people may already be saints, All Saints' Day observances tend to focus on known saints --that is those recognized in the canon of the saints by the Catholic Church. All Saints' Day is also commemorated by members of the Eastern Orthodox Church as well as some protestant churches, such as Anglican, Lutheran and Anglican churches. Generally, All Saints' Day is a Catholic Holy Day of Obligation, meaning all Catholics are required to attend Mass on that day, unless they have an excellent excuse, such as serious illness. Other countries have different rules according to their national bishop's conferences. The bishops of each conference have the authority to amend the rules surrounding the obligation of the day. All Saints' Day was formally started by Pope Boniface IV, who consecrated the Pantheon at Rome to the Virgin Mary and all the Martyrs on May 13 th in 609 AD. Boniface IV also established All Souls' Day, which follows All Saints. All Saints Day Holy Day of Obligation (All Masses will be in the Main Church Tuesday, October 31 st 7:00pm Wednesday, November 1 st 9:00am and Noon Lord, I am in this world to show your mercy to others. Other people will glorify you by making visible the power of your grace by their fidelity and constancy to you. For my part, I will glorify you by making known how good you are to sinners, that your mercy is boundless, and that no sinner, no matter how great his offenses, should have reason to despair of pardon. Other rites have their own celebrations. The Eastern Orthodox Church has several such days throughout the year, mostly on Saturdays. All Souls Day is not a holy day of obligation. It should not be confused with All Saints' Day, which is a holy day of obligation. The month of November is dedicated to praying for all of the deceased. 4 Respect Life Euthanasia in the Netherlands As reported in Signs of the Times by Ed Mechmann, a lawyer of the Archdiocesan Respect Life Office. A study in May came out in the New England Journal of Medicine which found that doctors report that 4.5% of deaths in the Netherlands were due to euthanasia. (If that were in the U S that would be the 6 th leading cause of death more than Alzheimer s, diabetes, suicide, murder or drug overdoses.) Euthanasia deaths were not only cases of people with terminal diseases but an increasing number of psychiatric and dementia patients and 431 people had been euthanized without their explicit consent. Cardinal Willem Eijk of Utrecht commented When one breaks the principle that human life is an essential value, one steps on the slippery slope. We cannot ignore what is happening around the world. We are talking about the most vulnerable lives handicapped children, old people with chronic problems, mentally ill people. We need to be informed by the truths of Church teaching about the sanctity and dignity of every human life, regardless of condition or capability. RCIA Today at the 10:45 Mass we have the Rite of Welcome for our RCIA Catechumen and Candidates as they prepare to receive the Sacraments of Initiation. Two Catechumen will receive Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist; three Candidates will be received from other Christian religions and will receive Confirmation and the Eucharist; and nine Candidates were baptized Catholic and will receive Confirmation and the Eucharist. Please pray for our Catechumen and Candidates as they prepare for the sacraments. Do you want more peace and joy in your home? Come and see how at the next St. Joseph's Workshop on Friday, November 3, 2017 at 7:00 pm at the Parish Center of St. Patrick's Church (Yorktown Heights). This month the talk is entitled Personal Consecration to Mary. St. Joseph's Workshop is currently a series of programs that are held on Friday nights once a month (from October to June) from 7:00 to 8:30pm. The evening will begin with light snacks and fellowship, followed by an inspirational talk on how to live your faith and will conclude with Eucharistic Adoration and a Family Rosary. Free babysitting is offered during the talk. Confession will be available during Adoration. Thank You The Catholic Daughters wish to thank St. John s parishioners for their tremendous support of the Bake Sale. Donations will be provided to the Church and charitable organizations within the community as a result of everyone s generosity. A special thanks to all those who donated clothes and food, prepared sandwiches, helped to sort clothing and traveled on the Breakfast Run on October 21st. The outpouring of support was beyond measure. We were able to feed and clothe over 75 people who are living on the streets of Manhattan. Thank you to Father Caruso and the staff of the parish who supported this outreach activity. As always, St. John's continues to support the needy in extraordinary ways.
