2 September 21, 2014 From the Pastor s Desk Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time MY CONDITION: I try not to repeat medical conditions because I have difficulty with medical jargon. Example A was last Sunday as I explained my condition probably three different ways at three different Masses. The diagnosis is that I have arthritis and a possible problem with my rotator cuff. I ll be going to sign up for therapy today (9/15). I m scheduled for a consultation on Wednesday. So please keep me in your prayers that all will go well. THE JOHN PAUL II SHRINE: The following is some news about the John Paul II Shrine. Maybe you ll have time to visit it someday. A Celebration of Saint John Paul II Shrine renamed in Honor of New Saint Just a few hours after Pope John Paul II was declared a saint by Pope Francis in Rome on April 27th, the U.S. shrine dedicated to preserving and proclaiming spiritual heritage was officially renamed as the Saint John Paul II National Shrine. Located in Washington, D.C. and sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, this outstanding facility is the only national shrine named in honor of Saint John Paul II. The Shrine is at the service of the Church and can be seen as a gift from the Knights of Columbus to the Church and the whole of society for generations to come, said Deputy Supreme Knight Logan T. Ludwig, who took part in the renaming ceremony with Patrick E. Kelly, the Shrine s Executive Director. The Mass concluded a two-day canonization celebration at the Shrine that included live music, a gathering for young people and an early-morning live simulcast of the canonization ceremony from Rome. The weekend also featured opportunities to venerate a relic of Saint John Paul II - a vial of his blood that was drawn following the 1981 attempt on his life. a saint of our time, but a man and a saint for the ages -- for us here and now, and for future generations. Pilgrims to the Saint John Paul II Shrine have the opportunity to view two first-class relics of Saint John Paul II. Residing at the St. John Paul II National Shrine is a square piece of Pope John Paul II s cassock that was stained with his blood during the assassination attempt made on his life on May 13, the anniversary of the first apparition of the Virgin Mary to the three children of Fatima. John Paul II attributed his survival that day to Mary s protection and, in tribute to her, directed that a mosaic depicting Mater Ecclesiae (Mother of the Church) be installed on the façade of the Apostolic Palace, so that an image of the Blessed Mother would overlook St. Peter s Square, where the failed attempt on his life took place. This relic was acquired from the Cause of Canonization of Pope John Paul II by His Eminence Donald Cardinal Wuerl, specifically for the Saint John Paul II National Shrine. On October 5, 2011, at the conclusion of a Mass held in the Divine Mercy Shrine during the 2nd World Apostolic Congress on Mercy in Krakow, His Eminence Stanislaw Cardinal Dziwisz, the Archbishop of Krakow and longtime personal secretary to Pope John Paul II, presented a reliquary containing Saint John Paul II s blood to Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. It was given to the Knights of Columbus to foster devotion at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine. This relic was central to the canonization celebration held at the Shrine on April 27, and also traveled to Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Orlando as part of a special tour held this summer by the Shrine. SPECIAL COLLECTION This weekend, September 20th & 21st a second collection will be taken (special diocesan collection) to provide humanitarian relief and pastoral support for our affected brothers and sisters in the Middle East. This special appeal comes about because of the grave concern for the ongoing crisis in the cradle of Christianity and the terrible suffering of Christians and other innocent victims of violence in Iraq, Syria and Gaza. Your kindness will benefit those struggling to survive, protect their children and live with dignity in very dire conditions. Together with your gifts, the members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul continue his work and mission in our parish. 4 RESPONSE TO BLACK MASS: All Are Encouraged to Participate in Eucharistic Adoration on 9/21 You may be aware that a satanic group has scheduled a so -called black mass at the Civic Center Music Hall in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to take place on Sunday, September 21, This is not some form of dark entertainment. It is deadly serious, blasphemous and obscene an affront not only to the Catholic Church but to all persons of faith. In response to this event, Bishop David A. Zubik invites the clergy, religious, faithful and people of good will to join him in a special time of Eucharistic Adoration on Sunday, September 21, 2014, from 6:00 9:00 p.m., in the John Bernard McDowell Auditorium on the campus of Saint Paul Seminary (2900 Noblestown Road, Crafton). Bill was a trailer truck driver who was paralyzed on his way to work when his truck was rear ended; he is now in need of a medical van.
