2 March 23, 2014 From the Pastor s Desk Third Sunday of Lent LENT 2014: Turn off the water. Growing up as a child I couldn t understand why my dad would holler Turn off the water. Living on a farm we didn t have an unlimited supply like those who have city water. Then as I got older I found out that you not only pay for using the water, you also get billed for waste water in some places. And that charge is based on the water you use. So running water you are not using is wasting our valuable resource and costing money sometimes twice. So use your water wisely. Our first reading today spoke of life giving water, water that helped the people and animals drink and it came from a ROCK. OH, what God can do. That Waters of Baptism take away original sin. The water saved Moses, the water flowed from the side of Christ as a sign of Him washing away our sins. May we always use our water wisely and remember what a necessary gift it is from our loving God. CONFESSIONS FOR LENT: Confessions will be heard on Tuesday afternoon, March 25th from 2:00 to 2:30 PM at Good Shepherd Church and on Thursday, March 27th at Sacred Heart Church from 7:00 to 7:30 PM. I ll stay longer if needed. Also, I ll be at St. Maurice on Thursday, April 3rd at 7:00 PM. A group of confessors will be there and you are invited. Also you can call for an appointment if these times do not work out. And as you know, I hear confessions every Saturday from 3:00 to 3:30 PM in Good Shepherd Church. SR. MARITA: Well, I guess it s finally sunk in for me. Sr. Marita is not coming back to minister to us. She was such a joy to work with and to have fun with. I am grateful we were able to work together for over a year. Her presence as we would go to an event was good to behold. Her knowledge of people and ability to relate was a real gift for me. Her presence in our area and parish was and still is God s gift to us. Hopefully one day she will improve enough to return for a well earned farewell party. Till then let us remember her in prayer that God will bless her new ministry to her fellow recovering and retired community. I say THANK YOU SR. MARITA for all you ve done and your loyal devotion to the Good Shepherd Parish Family. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL: Our second collection next week supports our St. Vincent de Paul Society. They do so much for the needy of our neighborhood and it is made possible by our contributions. You can help by supporting this collection next week. Our parish is blessed to have a group of men and women dedicated to the prayers and works of St. Vincent de Paul. WELCOME HOME: Our Welcome Home Cards are available. They are in packs of three. Kindly send one or even better hand deliver one to a family member, a friend or business associate and invite them to return Home to Good Shepherd for Easter. Be sure to tell them that Holy Saturday Vigil, Mass (April 19th) is at 7:30 PM. This is one more way that you can join Pope Francis in evangelizing. You can go an extra step and arrange to meet them here or even better offer to pick them up. SWEEPSTAKES Sweepstake Tickets cost $20.00 and are good for everyday of the Month of May except Sundays. Mondays through Thursdays win $1, straight; Fridays-$1,500 straight and Saturdays-$1,200 straight. Your ticket also wins if it comes up in a box. These would make wonderful Mother s Day gifts if your mom has that gambler s spirit. If you sell 5 tickets the sixth one is free. I need sellers so please sign up and take a 6 pack. NITE AT THE RACES : We are teaming up with the East Pittsburgh V.F.W. to hold a Nite at the Races on Friday evening, April 4th at the V.F.W., 104 Draper Street, East Pittsburgh. The doors will open at 7:00 PM. Your $10.00 entrance fee will include a buffet (meatless choices). The races will start at 8:00 PM. There will be a cash bar available and other games of chance. I need to provide about 10 willing workers from 7:00 to 11:00 PM. If you are willing to help let me know. 20 workers would even be better and we can share the load. Tickets ($10) will be available at Church and the Office. You can also buy and name a horse for $ I have available races 6 thru 10. You can choose your number if available. These sheets will be at the churches on Saturday and Sunday and at the office during the week. If your horse wins, you will win $ I ll be needing some desserts for the buffet table. So if you can bake, please do so. You can drop them off at the Office until 4:00 PM on Friday, April 4th or take them to the V.F.W. as you come to the races or drop them there between 6:00 and 7:00 PM. Love and Peace, Fr. Semler

3 HUMAN DEVELOPMENT COLLECTION Due to the Fifth Sunday collection for St. Vincent de Paul next weekend, we will have the second collection for the Human Development Campaign this weekend. Thank you in advance for your generosity. You Can Make a Difference! High School Handbell Team Concert, rained out at Kennywood, snowed out on March 2nd, we are going to try again. We have rescheduled for today, Sunday, March 23, at 6:30 PM. They are prepared and ready to go. Their repertoire list is quite varied and includes show tunes, rock & roll, sacred pieces and uses other instruments and accompaniments. A light social afterward provided by Phyllis Koncerak. Come out and see what the parish high schoolers can do. The concert will last a little less than an hour. Team #1 Ringers are: Sharon Mains, Rob Swope, Tony Davis, Mychayla Nash, Zac Shaffer, Amanda Hamilton, Abi Petrocelli, Sydney Morris, Chance Peoples, Julie Joscak, Leah Morris, Jake Klimko, and Mary Schuneman. Instruments played by Jenna Yezovich & Tyler Motto. East Catholic School Open House East Catholic School will hold an Open House on Sunday, March 23rd from 1:30 to 3:00 PM. If you have school aged children or ones who will be soon, this is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the great educational experience East Catholic provides. Even if you don t have school aged children, please come by to see our school in action. Also, there will be a Fairy Tale Ball in Keane Hall so please encourage your pre-school aged children to dress up as their favorite fairy tale character and enjoy the opportunity to act them out together while you can feel free to see the school. MONTHLY COMMEMORATIVE CELEBRATION The MCC for March will be celebrated this Thursday, March 27th. The next MCC will take place on Thursday, April 24th at 9:00 AM at Good Shepherd Church. It has been presented for 24 consecutive years throughout the Pittsburgh area in over 140 different churches of all denominations. This is the last year that it will be presented, so be sure to mark your calendars now. It is 90 minutes in length. Why Must He Die?, written and directed by Linda Wallace, is a meditation through music, drama and liturgical dance on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. 4 Gorzkie Zale (Lamentations) The annual celebration sponsored by the Pittsburgh Fraternity of Polish Clergy will be held on Sunday, March 30th at 3:00 PM in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Polish Hill, Pittsburgh. Bishop Zubik will be the main Celebrant. St. John Fisher Afternoon Bingo Social St. John Fisher Church, Churchill will sponsor the Bingo Social at Beaufort Hall on Sunday, March 30th beginning at 1:00 PM. Admission for 4 cards is $10.00 (additional cards available at 25 cents each or 5/$1.00). There will be 18 games (regular bingo or 4 corners only). Payout is $10.00 per game. Two specials $1.00 for 3 faces payout will be half of what is taken in. Snacks and soft drinks available for purchase throughout the afternoon. For more information, please call the church office at Lenten Nullity Presentations Jay Conzemius of the Tribunal Office will be providing a 45-minute presentation at Saint Thomas More Parish on April 2 in the Utopia Room at 7:00 p.m. The purpose of the talk is to provide information about the nullity process and help those wanting to begin the process to do so by receiving the initial paperwork. The talks are directed toward those who have a desire for adult education regarding this often misunderstood subject. People involved in RCIA as teachers or directors may have a special interest in attending this talk. This event, sponsored by the Secretariat for Leadership Development and its Department for Youth and Young Adult Ministry, features nationally known speakers and musicians along with Mass celebrated with Bishop Zubik. This event coincides with the annual World Youth Day celebration in Rome and will reflect upon the theme: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for there is the kingdom of heaven (Matt 5:3).
