2 August 10, 2014 From the Pastor s Desk Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time This Friday is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses will be held Thursday evening at 7:00 PM at Sacred Heart Church and on Friday at 9:00 AM at Sacred Heart Church. MORNING MASS: The attendance at the 9:00 AM Mass every morning at Sacred Heart Chapel has been very good, conducive to a small congregation and much more cost effective for utilities. So, the 9:00 AM Masses will be held at the Sacred Heart Chapel until we find a good reason to change. VACATION: Hey, it s great here in Florida. And as usual I don t miss you. But I do look forward to being back with you to celebrate the Assumption. I ll see you at Mass. AIR CONDITION REPORT: WOW! We received $6, into our Parish Share Program earmarked for our new air conditioner at Good Shepherd Church. Plus our monthly envelopes were also more than usual. Thanks to all who are supporting this project. I noticed, finally that Holy Cross envelope set has a blue monthly envelope for the 3rd Sunday of the month. By January we will all be on the same page. It looks like all is well and we expect to be up and running with air conditioning for next weekend. So for Masses and confessions next Saturday, August 16th and Sunday, August 17th at 9:00 AM we will return to Good Shepherd Church. The 11:00 AM Mass as usual will be at Sacred Heart. Thanks for your patience and understanding during this time. Let us continue to move forward in our love and service to our kind and generous God. SAINT ALPHONSUS: Saint Alphonsus was a child prodigy by age 16. He was already a lawyer and a very distinguished one at that. Pursuant to a legal defeat, he opted to leave the legal field and become a priest. He became very proficient here also and became a Doctor of the Church. He died August 1, I share this homily with you. FROM A SERMON BY SAINT ALPHONSUS LIGUORI, BISHOP All holiness and perfection of soul lies in our love for Jesus Christ our God, who is our Redeemer and our supreme good. It is part of the love of God to acquire and to nurture all the virtues which make a man perfect. Has not God in fact won for himself a claim on all our love? From all eternity he has loved us. And it is in this vein that he speaks to us: O man, consider carefully that I first loved you. You had not yet appeared in the light of day, nor did the world yet exist, but already I loved you. From all eternity I have loved you. Since God knew that man is enticed by favors, he wished to bind him to his love by means of his gifts: I want to catch men with the snares, those chains of love in which they allow themselves to be entrapped, so that they will love me. And all the gifts which he bestowed on man were given to this end. He gave him a soul, made in his likeness, and endowed with memory, intellect and will; he gave him a body equipped with the senses; it was for him that he created heaven and earth and such an abundance of things. He made all these things out of love for man, so that all creation might serve man, and man in turn might love God out of gratitude for so many gifts. But he did not wish to give us only beautiful creatures; the truth is that to win for himself our love, he went so far as to bestow upon us the fullness of himself. The eternal Father went so far as to give us his only Son. When he saw that we were all dead through sin and deprived of his grace, what did he do? Compelled, as the Apostle says, by the superabundance of his love for us, he sent his beloved Son to make reparation for us and to call us back to a sinless life. By giving us his Son, whom he did not spare precisely so that he might spare us, he bestowed on us at once every good; grace, love and heaven; for all these goods are certainly inferior to the Son: He who did not spare his own Son, but handed him over for all of us; how could he fail to give us along with his Son all good things? 3 SENIOR CITIZEN MEETING The Seniors will hold their regular monthly meeting this Wednesday, August 13th. Doors open at 11:30 AM and the meeting will begin at 12:30 PM. 4 83rd Annual Croatian Day Saturday, August 30th Kennywood Park Food selections include Hot Barbecued Lamb, Pork, Apple and Cheese Strudels, Nut and Poppyseed Rolls and more. Mikey Dee Tamburitzans will entertain from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. There will be a guest group from Croatia, Dzentmeni (Gentlemen) who will be on stage at 4:30, along with the Rankin Jr. Tamburitzans. The day will consist of a Bible Story, hot dogs, candy hunt, and of course, showers on the lawn. There is no cost, however, you must register by calling the church office at Our Lady of Joy Parish Festival: Aug , 2014 Games, bingo, Moonwalk, slide, crafts, Chinese auction, baked goods, food raffle and entertainment. For more info: Good Samaritan 19th Annual Parish Festival The festival will be held August 28, 29, 30 & 31 on the grounds of Good Samaritan Parish, 8th and Melrose Avenue, Ambridge. The festival includes homemade ethnic dinners each day, and all are available for take out. Games of Chance, raffles, outdoor food court and top of the line entertainment, all under the Big Top Tent. Featured artists include: Touche, Lenny Gomulka & Chicago Push, Dick Tady Orchestra, Jimmy Ross & the Jaggerz, The Cavliers, Ambridge Steel Drum Band and John Angel and the Halos.
