WELCOME TO ST. JOHN S Sixteenth Sunday of Pentecost September 6 & 9, 2018 We re thrilled that you are here today. Please sign the Friendship Register at the end of your pew so that we have a record of your visit. And please come and worship with us again. Please also introduce yourself to Pastor Kuske. He would love to meet you and to serve you in whatever way he can. OUR FACILITIES Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother s Room and downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John s believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be taught to young children.) If your young one needs some time out, we have an A/V-equipped Mother s Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. If you need anything during the service, please feel free to ask an usher. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Unbelief mocks and says that if God did all things well and was the source of all good because he is good, then he shouldn t allow misery and need in the first place. But especially in need and suffering God does all things well; that truth is the center of the Christian s quiet confidence. It is the reason for his hope based on the promises of God and earned for us by the work of Christ and its eternal consequence for us. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP God of compassion, your Son, Jesus, came to the suffering infirm and the dying, and by his word of authority set them free. Bless the ministry of your church that it may continue to speak a word of deliverance to all those in need; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen. Please Note This service is video-recorded and will be aired on our local cable channel at 12 pm today. If you would like a DVD copy of the service, please speak with Pastor after the service. 1

PLEASE STAND M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen CONFESSION OF SINS M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY (Kyrie) ABSOLUTION M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen 3
PRAYER AND PRAISE M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. GLORY BE TO GOD (Gloria in Excelsis) (Continued on following page) 4
PRAYER OF THE DAY M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you! M: Let us pray. Let your continual mercy, O Lord, cleanse and defend your Church; and because it cannot continue in safety without your help, protect and govern it always by your goodness; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen 5
THE WORD FIRST LESSON Isaiah 35:3-8a 3 Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; 4 say to those with fearful hearts, Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you. 5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6 Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. 7 The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs. In the haunts where jackals once lay, grass and reeds and papyrus will grow. 8 And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness. 6
PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 146 Christian Worship, page 120 Praise the LORD, O my soul.* I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Do not put your trust in princes,* in mortal men, who cannot save. Blessed is he whose hope is in the LORD his God,* the maker of heaven and earth. Refrain The LORD gives food to the hungry,* the LORD sets prisoners free. The LORD gives sight to the blind,* the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down. The LORD watches over the outcast* and sustains the fatherless and the widow. The LORD remains faithful forever.* He upholds the cause of the oppressed. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain Refrain Tune: Lynn Trapp MorningStar Music Publishers. 9 SECOND LESSON Acts 3:1-10 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer at three in the afternoon. 2 Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, Look at us! 5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. 6 Then Peter said, Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk. 7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man s feet and ankles became strong. 8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. 9 When all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. VERSE OF THE DAY (Philippians 4:4) M: Alleluia. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Alleluia. 8
PLEASE STAND GOSPEL Mark 7:31-37 After the announcement of the gospel, the congregation sings: C: Glory be to you, O Lord! 31 Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. 32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged him to place his hand on the man. 33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man s ears. Then he spit and touched the man s tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, Ephphatha! (which means, Be opened! ). 35 At this, the man s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly. 36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. He has done everything well, they said. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak. After the Gospel, the congregation sings: C: Praise be to you, O Christ! 9
APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PLEASE BE SEATED 10
