1 I Love My Church June 9 & 12, 2016 WELCOME TO ST. JOHN S We re thrilled that you are here today. Please sign the Friendship Register at the end of your pew so that we have a record of your visit. And please come and worship with us again. Please also introduce yourself to Pastor Schroeder or Pastor Maglietto. They would love to meet you and to serve you in whatever way they can. OUR FACILITIES Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother s Room and downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John s believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be taught to young children.) If your young one needs some time out, we have an audio/video equipped Mother s Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. If you need anything during the service, please feel free to ask an usher. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Today we continue a series of sermon messages following the theme I Love My Church. The Psalmist writes, The Earth is the Lord s and everything it (Psalm 24:1). Everything and everyone that exists belongs to God. Everything we have really belongs to him. We, too, belong to him. Today we consider how we have the freedom to return gifts of time, talent, and treasure back to God with a joyful and generous spirit. THE WORD FIRST LESSON Genesis 4:2-5 2 Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. 4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. OFFERING I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. 9 ANNOUNCEMENTS Summer Worship Schedule: Sunday worship services from Memorial Day weekend Labor Day weekend will be one service, 9:00 am. Thursday services remain at 6:30 pm. Bible Study: Join us for Bible study this morning at 10:15 as we continue a study of The Ideal Church. Sunday School is on summer break. Stay for fellowship with your church family. Father s Day (June 19): Please stay for Root beer floats following our 9 am service. Congregational Meeting: Sunday, June 26 following the 9am service we will have our quarterly Voters Meeting/Annual budget meeting to review the budget year. Western Wisconsin District News: All our male caled workers and lay delegates from many of our congregations met this past Monday and Tuesday at Luther Prep in Watertown, WI. New District leaders were elected including a new District President because Pastor Herb Prahl was not running for re-election. Our new leaders are as follows: President - Mike Jensen, 1st VP - Jerry Ewings, 2nd VP - Brett Brauer, Sec/Treas - Galen Riediger. Please keep these men in your prayers as they serve our District. Lifest 2016 is July 7-10: Anyone interested in camping or carpooling should contact Mark Smidl ( ) who will be camping there for the full event. Please make your plans ASAP if you wish to go. Check with Mark Smidl or Pastor Schroeder for more information. Teacher s Aide 2016/17 School Year: We are looking for a teacher s aide for 4K (4 hours per school day, 4 days a week) and a second aide for kindergarten (approximately 4 hours per school day, 5 days a week). If interested, contact the church or school office or Martin Strobel, SCRIP: Scrip sales will continue throughout the summer Sunday mornings after each service. Orders placed one Sunday will be available for pick up the following Sunday. Craft Donations Childcare: Are you spring cleaning? Have too much stuff? Childcare is looking for odds and ends to use in making craft projects. Please consider donating items to Childcare. We are always looking for new ideas too! Thank you. Limited Church Office Hours: Monday, June 27-Thursday, June 30, the church office will only be open 8 am-12 noon. There will not be afternoon hours this week. Sauk County Fair-July 11-17: We will need help at the fair booth, which is a good way to promote our church and school. Please speak to Tim Kiefer or Ed Lukaszewicz about helping to man the booth. VBS: The second full week in August (Mon-Friday, August 8-12) is our week for VBS. Camp Phillip staffers will be needing housing as they are coming to partner with us this year. They and our VBS kids will participate in the Thursday night worship service on August 11 th. We will do some more VBS planning this month as Education/Outreach get together, including promoting the theme: Rock On!. If you can help with housing Camp Phillip staffers and/or help at VBS, please contact the church office, Lutheran High School Scholarships: Going to a Lutheran high school next year? Now is the time to apply for the Ladies Aid Lutheran High School scholarship. Applications can be picked up in the church office and are due by July 1. The scholarship gives St. John s members $500 to help defray the cost of tuition at any Lutheran high school. Church League Softball: B games are always played at 6:30 pm A games follow, sometimes at 7:45 pm, sometimes 9:00 pm. B-Team plays June 13, 6:30, on Field 3 - this week our A-Team plays June 13, 9:00, on Field 1. PLAY BALL! 16 17
