2 The Fourth Sunday after Epiphany The Baptism of Our Lord January 25 & 28, 2018 WELCOME TO ST. JOHN S We re thrilled that you are here today. Please sign the Friendship Register at the end of your pew so that we have a record of your visit. And please come and worship with us again. Please also introduce yourself to Pastor Maglietto. He would love to meet you and to serve you in whatever way he can. OUR FACILITIES Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother s Room and downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John s believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be taught to young children.) If your young one needs some time out, we have an audio/video equipped Mother s Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. If you need anything during the service, please feel free to ask an usher. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY During the Epiphany season we want to get to know Jesus. This Sunday we get to know him by baptism, both his and ours. But the glory is evident only to a chosen few; notice, too, that the greater the glory, the more hidden its manifestation the glory of our life with Christ is by faith, not by sight. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP O Lord - our Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter - we are assembled in your presence to hear your Holy Word. We pray that you would open our hearts by your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of your Word we may repent of our sins, believe in Jesus, and grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear us for Jesus sake. Amen. 1

PLEASE STAND INVOCATION M: The grace of our Lord (+) Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you. CONFESSION OF SINS M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy. C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will. C: Amen. 3

6 PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray. Father in heaven, at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Keep us who are baptized into Christ faithful in our calling as your children and make us heirs with him of everlasting life; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 7 THE WORD FIRST LESSON Isaiah 49:1-6 1 Listen to me, you coastlands. Pay attention, you faraway peoples! The Lord called me from the womb. When I was inside my mother, he mentioned my name. 2 He made my mouth like a sharpened sword. He hid me in the shadow of his hand. He made me a polished arrow. He concealed me in his quiver. 3 He said to me, You are my servant Israel, in whom I will display my glory. 4 But I said to myself, I have labored in vain. I spent my strength and came up empty, with nothing. Yet a just verdict for me rests with the Lord, and my reward is with my God. 5 But now the Lord, who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to turn Jacob back to him, so that Israel might be gathered to him, so that I will be honored in the eyes of the Lord, because my God has been my strength 6 the Lord said: It is too small a thing that you should just be my servant to raise up only the tribes of Jacob and to restore the ones I have preserved in Israel, so I will appoint you to be a light for the nations, so that my salvation will be known to the end of the earth. 9 SECOND LESSON Acts 16: About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. Instantly all the doors were opened, and everyone s chains came loose. 27 When the jailer woke up and saw that the prison doors were opened, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, because he thought that the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted with a loud voice, Don t harm yourself, because we are all here! 29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in, and fell down trembling in front of Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them outside and asked, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 They said, Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household. 32 They spoke the word of the Lord to him and to everyone in his home. 33 At the same hour of the night, he took them and washed their wounds. Without delay, he and all his family were baptized. 34 Then he brought Paul and Silas into his house and set food before them. He rejoiced, because he and his whole household had come to believe in God. VERSE OF THE DAY 8

10 PLEASE STAND GOSPEL Mark 1: John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him. They were baptized by him in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins. 6 John was clothed in camel s hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. He ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He preached, One more powerful than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals! 8 I baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: You are my Son, whom I love. I am well pleased with you. C: Praise be to you, O Christ. 9

12 SERMON Acts 16:25-34 Freedom for the Prisoner Pastor Nick Maglietto APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 11

13 OFFERING PRAYER OF THE CHURCH LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. 12

17 ANNOUNCEMENTS Pastor Kuske Installation: The installation service for Pastor Kuske will be Sunday, February 4 at 2 pm. There will be refreshments served immediately following the service. Please sign up on the sheet in the Narthex and indicate how many in your family will be coming. All food and beverages will be provided. We only need to know how many to provide for. Sunday School: is held every Sunday at 8 am. All children will gather downstairs in the Fellowship Hall for the opening and be dismissed to their classes from there. MIDWEEK Bible Class: PLEASE NOTE THE DAY CHANGE! Classes will now meet on Thursdays at 10 am. We will begin the new year with a study of the book of 2 Thessalonians. Morning Doves Lenten Theme Baskets: We will once again be selling tickets for our annual Theme baskets raffle during Lent starting with the first Soup Supper on Wednesday, February 21 st till the drawing of winners on the last Soup Supper on March 21 st. Tickets will sell for $1/1 or $5/6 or $20/40. If you wish to donate a theme basket for this event, please made sure the baskets are enclosed in a cellophane bag or wrapped with saran wrap and labeled. They can be dropped off in the fellowship hall of church starting February 16 at 8 am. Men of His Word Conference: February 24, 2018 in Oshkosh, WI.
