The members of St. John s believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be taught to young children.) THOUGHT FOR THE DAY The gifts of God are so rich and varied that the devil uses that very generosity in God to stir up jealousy and envy. Expect it in others; find it yourself as well! That weakness makes it crystal clear that our need for a Savior is a constant one. It makes it equally clear that our struggle against our own flesh gives us much more difficulty and anguish than the hostility or the persecution from the world. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Father of our Lord Jesus, the strength of all who trust you, help us to live according to your design no matter what you allow to come our way, and to treasure both your word of command and your word of forgiveness, in Jesus' name we pray. CONFESSION OF SINS M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. 8 THE WORD EPISTLE LESSON Philippians 1:12-18a 12 Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel. 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. 14 Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly. 15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16 The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. VERSE OF THE DAY (Philippians 2:10,11) Alleluia. 9 PLEASE STAND GOSPEL Mark 9: Teacher, said John, we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us. 39 Do not stop him, Jesus said. No one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, 40 for whoever is not against us is for us. 41 I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward. 42 And if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around his neck. 43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out. 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, 48 where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched. 49 Everyone will be salted with fire. 50 Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Everyone is welcome to attend!! Family Fun Night: November 2nd is our school s annual Family Fun Night! This is a great opportunity for friends to gather at school, play games, eat, play more games, and enjoy a raffle to close out the evening. Doors open at 5:00 pm, and the raffle starts at 7:00 pm.
