Please sign the Friendship Register at the end of your pew so that we have a record of your visit. And please come and worship with us again. Please also introduce yourself to Pastor Kuske. He would love to meet you and to serve you in whatever way he can. OUR FACILITIES Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother s Room and downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John s believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be taught to young children.) If your young one needs some time out, we have an audio and video-equipped Mother s Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. If you need anything during the service, please feel free to ask an usher. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Jesus comes as the invited guest to reveal the splendor of his glory. As we behold his glory, we delight in our bridegroom. For he delights in us, bringing to us his righteous deliverance, the strength of his Spirit, and the divine dimensions of his immeasurable love. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Almighty and eternal God, at the wedding of Cana in Galilee, your Son Jesus Christ, revealed his divine power in a miraculous sign. Grant your people faith to always see the glory of Jesus hidden in the means of your grace, the Gospel and the Sacraments; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. CONFESSION OF SINS M: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. 4

9 GOSPEL John 2:1-11 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus mother said to him, They have no more wine. 4 Dear woman, why do you involve me? Jesus replied. My time has not yet come. 5 His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, Fill the jars with water ; so they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told them, Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet. They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now. 11 This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. 11 SERMON Isaiah 62:1-5 Delight with the Bridegroom in His Bride For Zion s sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem s sake I will not remain quiet, till her righteousness shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch. 2 The nations will see your righteousness, and all kings your glory; you will be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will bestow. 3 You will be a crown of splendor in the LORD s hand, a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4 No longer will they call you Deserted, or name your land Desolate. But you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the LORD will take delight in you, and your land will be married. 5 As a young man marries a maiden, so will your sons marry you; as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you. 11

12 NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. 13 PRAYERS LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. THE SACRAMENT DISTRIBUTION Our Congregation practices the biblical practice of Close Communion. The Bible teaches that communing together signifies a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Lord s Supper by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness that does not exist. Therefore, we kindly ask that if you are not a member of St. John s or a sister WELS or ELS congregation, that you do not commune with us today. 22 Announcements Sunday Morning Bible Class: As we continue to study the book, What in the World is Going On, we will be reviewing the Biblical view of the world. Mid-Week Bible Study: This week, we will be exploring the book of Ruth. Finances: The 2018 financial statements will not be mailed, but may be picked up at church at the end of January. 51 st Anniversary: January 14 th marked the 51 st anniversary of St. John s radio broadcast of the Sunday worship services. Help Needed: Childcare is looking for people to assist with the daily caretaking of children. If you or someone you know enjoys working with children ages 3 to 12, please consider helping our ministry grow. Call the childcare at for more info. Supporting Our Soldiers: Mary Martha Circle is collecting items to send to our WELS active duty military men and women now through April 8 th. There will be a donation box in the Narthex to donate items or you may give a monetary gift. Pathways to Christ Retreat: Ladies, the 19 th annual Pathways to Christ Retreat is March 8-10, 2019 at LaSure s Hall in Oshkosh, WI. This year s theme is I have learned the secret of being content from Philippians 4:12. 23 Holy Week Devotions: Martin Luther College would like to share with you the 2019 Holy Week devotional they have created. In this complimentary booklet, you will follow the Baptist's cry of John 1:29: Behold the Lamb of God. From Genesis through Revelation, Scripture uses the image of a lamb as a type of Christ and a metaphor to illustrate how Jesus, our sacrificial Lamb, secured our salvation.
