2 Last Judgement Sunday November 8 & 11, 2018 WELCOME TO ST. JOHN S We re thrilled that you are here today. Please sign the Friendship Register at the end of your pew so that we have a record of your visit. And please come and worship with us again. Please also introduce yourself to Pastor Kuske. He would love to meet you and to serve you in whatever way he can. OUR FACILITIES Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother s Room and downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John s believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be taught to young children.) If your young one needs some time out, we have an A/V-equipped Mother s Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. If you need anything during the service, please feel free to ask an usher. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY The readings for this Sunday set in sharp contrast the attitudes of believers and unbelievers. The attitude of the unbeliever to any talk of judgment by God can only be denial or terror. But the attitude of the child of God is formed by the Word of God. As that Word has created his faith during his life on earth, so it molds his confidence in the face of death and judgment. But the Word of God and the faith it creates will be seen as fully vindicated by death and judgment. Therefore, we look forward to the day on which we pass into the courtroom of God to hear the Not guilty! verdict which brought us to faith in the first place. There is no better preparation for death and judgment than a firm clinging to that gracious verdict. There is no better life than the one that has that verdict as its center and the motivation for everything in it. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Lord God, merciful Savior, when the Day of Judgment comes with fire, our only hope will be your grace. Keep us alert and watchful for Christ s return and for Jesus sake let the Sun of righteousness bring healing now and joy to our resurrected bodies on that Day. Amen. EPISTLE LESSON Hebrews 9: For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he enters heaven itself, now to appear for us in God s presence. 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. 26 Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgement, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. LMSG, a partnership of ELS and WELS veterans, is working to grow awareness of and bring Christian support to military members and their families in our congregations and beyond. These baskets will go to men and women in nursing homes and individual residences, so items must be individually wrapped candies and snacks, tea and hot chocolate, gum or personal items such as purse-size hand lotions, and socks. No homemade items, please. THANK YOU!! Thanks to all who donated time, effort, and candy to make St. John s Trunk-Or-Treat a success. We had over 500 visitors this year! 18

19 St. Vincent de Paul Thanksgiving Day Banquet: The members of St. Vincent de Paul cordially invite you to attend their annual Thanksgiving Day Banquet. They will be serving dinner between noon- 12:30 at St. Joseph s cafeteria. It is an opportunity to have a great meal, and to socialize with others in our community. There is no need to be alone for Thanksgiving. If you would like to come, you will need a reservation, so please call the store at , by Monday, November 19th. If you live in the city of Baraboo and have no ride, we can provide transportation for you. Please come and join us. Monday Meadows Evangelists Needed: We need occasional Monday evening volunteers to help show the video of Sunday s service and to gather patients from their rooms and return them after the worship service is over. It all takes about 90 minutes.
