We gather for worship so that we can receive from God the good news of what Jesus has done for us. Jesus is at the center of our faith and our lives. Without him we have nothing. With him we have everything. Welcome Worshiper Cards are located in the book racks. Please fill one out and place it in the offering plate later in the service. Restrooms are located in the entryway. Two Nursery-Rooms are available in the entryway for parents with small children. Footnotes throughout the worship folder help explain the different parts of the service. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP With all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, we praise you, Lord. But this is only possible through your presence in us, by your grace. Otherwise, we are easily distracted, diverted away from where you wish us to be. Forgive us, our lack of attention to your Word, our failure to seek and find what we need from the source of all our joy. Help us to repent, to turn in the right direction, that we may fulfill your commandment to love you with all that we are, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. May we indeed worship you today with all our heart. In Jesus' name. Amen. CONFESSION OF SINS M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. Lord, we pray that your mercy and grace may always go before and follow after us that, loving you with undivided hearts, we may be ready for every good and useful work; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. THE WORD OF GOD THE FIRST LESSON 2 Kings 22:1-11, 23:1, 2 King Josiah discovers the Book of the Law and requires it as mandatory reading. JOSIAH WAS EIGHT YEARS OLD WHEN HE BECAME KING, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years. His mother s name was Jedidah daughter of Adaiah; she was from Bozkath. 2 He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD and walked in all the ways of his father David, not turning aside to the right or to the left. 3 In the eighteenth year of his reign, King Josiah sent the secretary, Shaphan son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, to the temple of the LORD. He said: 4 Go up to Hilkiah the high priest and have him get ready the money that has been brought into the temple of the LORD, which the doorkeepers have collected from the people. 5 Have them entrust it to the men appointed to supervise the work on the temple. And have these men pay the workers who repair the temple of the LORD 6 the carpenters, the builders and the masons. Also have them purchase timber and dressed stone to repair the temple. 7 But they need not account for the money entrusted to them, because they are acting faithfully. 8 Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the secretary, I have found the Book of the Law in the temple of the LORD. He gave it to Shaphan, who read it. 9 Then Shaphan the secretary went to the king and reported to him: Your officials have paid out the money that was in the temple of the LORD and have entrusted it to the workers and supervisors at the temple. 10 Then Shaphan the secretary informed the king, Hilkiah the priest has given me a book. And Shaphan read from it in the presence of the king. 11 When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his robes. Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 2 He went up to the temple of the LORD with the men of Judah, the people of Jerusalem, the priests and the prophets all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the LORD. 3

5 THE VERSE OF THE DAY Romans 15:4 Alleluia. Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Alleluia. After the reading of the verse of the day the congregation sings: THE GOSPEL LESSON Luke 10:38-42 After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings: A S JESUS AND HIS DISCIPLES WERE ON THEIR WAY, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, Lord, don t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me! 41 Martha, Martha, the Lord answered, you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her. After the Gospel, the congregation sings: 4

6 THE APOSTLE S CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THE HYMN OF THE DAY How Precious Is the Book Divine Christian Worship #284 THE SERMON 2 Kings 22:1-11, 23:1, 2 Old Testament Character Study - Josiah Jesus said, Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. (Matthew 10:32) When we speak the creed (usually the Apostle s or Nicene Creeds), we are joining together to publically confess our faith in Christ. This confession unites us with Christians around the world and those saints who have gone before us. 5

7 THE RESPONSE THANKSGIVING AND PRAYER THE OFFERING The members of St, Peter Congregation have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and around the world. Guests at St. Peter are welcome to participate in the offering but need not feel obligated to do so. 6

8 THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH M: Heavenly Father, you have gathered us to your Son s feet that we might hear his Word. C: Keep us from being anxious and troubled about the many things of the world, that with quieted hearts we might receive this one thing needed. M: Heavenly Father, as you have given us varied places to serve your many purposes in this world, help us to treasure our every vocation as a high calling, since it is a gift to us from your hand and serves your will. C: Keep us faithful in them, that glory may come to your name and good to our neighbor. M: Heavenly Father, look with favor on our land and bless us according to your mercy. Give us devout and faithful rulers, that we may not be governed according to the sinful desires of man, but according to your wise and just ways. C: Keep our military in safety, guarding them as they offer up their lives for our security. M: Heavenly Father, we give thanks and praise to you for the faithful lives of the saints before us, remembering especially this day those who labored among us here at St Peter, serving your Son with the gifts that you gave them. C: Grant us to follow their good example and seek out ways to serve our Master who so faithfully serves us. Special prayers and intercessions may follow M: Into your hands, dear Father, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, in whose name we further pray: THE LORD S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 7
