2 WELCOME TO ST. JOHN S Thirteenth Sunday of Pentecost August 16 & 19, 2018 We re thrilled that you are here today. Please sign the Friendship Register at the end of your pew so that we have a record of your visit. And please come and worship with us again. Please also introduce yourself to Pastor Kuske. He would love to meet you and to serve you in whatever way he can. OUR FACILITIES Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother s Room and downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John s believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be taught to young children.) If your young one needs some time out, we have an audio and videoequipped Mother s Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. If you need anything during the service, please feel free to ask an usher. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY God did not give us his Sabbath so that by keeping it we could somehow earn his favor. No, our focus in worship is on our own sinfulness, and on the forgiving love of God in Christ. We practice this with mercy not sacrifice. Through this message we find true rest rest for our souls even as it is presented by fallible human beings. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Merciful God, you give eternal life to all who eat the body and blood of your Son, Jesus. Give us faith that will never be ashamed of him, but will take courage from his presence in our lives, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 12 PLEASE STAND NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. The Bible teaches that communing together signifies a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Lord s Supper by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness that does not exist. Therefore, we kindly ask that if you are not a member of St. John s or a sister WELS or ELS congregation, that you do not commune with us today. If you have any questions, please speak with Pastor Kuske and he will be happy answer them. PERSONAL PRAYER BEFORE COMMUNION Lord, I am not worthy to be a guest at your holy table. But you are the friend of sinners, and you will not cast me out. This bread is your body, which bore my sins upon the tree. This wine is your blood, which purifies me from all guilt. EHV Bibles: The new Evangelical Heritage Version Bible (EHV), currently only New Testament and Psalms, is available to purchase from the church office for $15.00 as a soft cover.
