Suggested silent prayer: Hymn 118, O Dearest Lord, Your Sacred Head LITURGY Service of the Word, CW page 38 WELS CONNECTION VIDEO HYMN 520 Your Hand, O Lord, in Days of Old Stand M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you. CONFESSION OF SINS M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

2 C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will. C: Amen. PRAYER AND PRAISE M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. C: Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed are they who take refuge in him. PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray. M: Lord Jesus, you have done all things well. Let your continual mercy cleanse and defend your church. Since we cannot continue in safety without your help, protect and govern us always by your goodness; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. FIRST LESSON Isaiah 35:4 7 Say to those with fearful hearts, Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you. 5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6 Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy, for water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. 7 The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs. In the haunts where jackals once lay, grass and reeds and papyrus will grow. PSALM 146 Please turn to page 120 in the front of the hymnal. 2

3 SECOND LESSON James 1:17 27 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created. 19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 for man s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it he will be blessed in what he does. 26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. Stand GOSPEL Mark 7:31 37 Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. 32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged him to place his hand on the man. 33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man s ears. Then he spit and touched the man s tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, Ephphatha! (which means, Be opened! ). 35 At this, the man s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly. 3

4 36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. He has done everything well, they said. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak. M: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ! How the Lord loves all the righteous! He protects the stranger s stay, Helps the fatherless and widow, But diverts the wicked s way. Yes, the Lord will reign forever; Zion s God forevermore, Throughout every generation; Hallelujah! Praise the Lord. Be seated OFFERING & FRIENDSHIP REGISTER Stand PRAYER OF THE CHURCH & THE LORD S PRAYER M: Savior, we praise you for all the mercies you have shown us and all your people around the world again this past week. Lord Jesus, M: You make the deaf hear and the mute speak. You give sight to the blind. Lord Jesus, M: We pray for our brothers and sisters with hearing impairments, that you would continue to use gifts such as sign language to build their faith, and increase the number of faithful congregations that actively serve the deaf. Lord Jesus, M: We also pray for the 80%-plus deaf in our land who are not only without hearing, but are without hope and without God. Open their hearts to your good news, and whatever miracles you do with their ears, above all, do the same miracles in their hearts you have done in ours. Lord Jesus, 5

6 M: We entrust to you the health of..., and so many other ill believers who need your compassionate care. You have helped and healed so often. You withhold and you give. Lord Jesus, M: That includes giving St. Paul Lutheran in North Mankato a new pastor, installed Sunday afternoon. Bless Pastor Nelson and his family in every way. Make them a blessing to others. Lord Jesus, M: That also includes allowing local public schools again to start classes. Thank you for all who teach and learn in our nearest schools. Keep them safe from harm. Send your angels to guard Christian teachers. Grant all students to become good neighbors and helpful citizens. Lord Jesus, M: As rulers plot, mobs rage and foreign uprisings threaten, give our country s military and diplomatic leaders wisdom. Lead our commander-in-chief, in particular. In times that seem placid and times that seem perilous, Lord Jesus, M: Give our country a good new Supreme Court justice. Guide all our elected leaders and judges to be wise, honest and impartial. Rule and direct all whom you have placed over us. Lord Jesus, M: Never was that more evident than when you gave your life for us on the cross and rose again in triumph. Lord Jesus, M: And for every one of your people on this earth, especially in view of the day when you will give all who have died trusting in you new hearing, new eyesight and eternal glory, you have taught us to pray: C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, 6

8 M: Almighty God, we thank you for teaching us the things you want us to believe and do. Help us by your Holy Spirit to keep your Word in pure hearts that we may be strengthened in faith, guided in holiness, and comforted in life and in death, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 9 TRINITY NEWS S S starts a new year this Sunday, with the story of God creating all things (Genesis 1). Not sure where your child goes? Ask Pastor Witte for help. Weekly teen Bible classes also resume today. They will meet upstairs in the teen room to discuss and apply the book of Genesis. G A : On Wednesday, September 12th at 6:00 pm the 30 x 40 garage on 520 6th St. ( lot 5, block 21) will be auctioned off. Trinity will have the right to refuse any or all bids. H C F N MVL will be needed for pairs or quartets of students (24 total) from Arizona Lutheran Academy choir the weekend of November Forms can be found in the office and need to be returned by October 1st for planning.
