He is the one who heals all our ills. To him we can go for everything and find compassion and eternal glory for he has done all things well! Meditation Before Worship All praise to God who reigns above, the God of all creation, the God of wonders, power, and love, the God of our salvation! With healing balm my soul he fills, the God who every sorrow stills-- to God all praise and glory! (CW 236:1) Preservice music will be used to help in quiet preparation for worship. 2

3 The Common Service The Common Service is a version of the historic liturgy of the Christian Church and became the service commonly used by English speaking Lutherans in America. If you would like to follow along with the music for this liturgy, it begins on page 15 in the front of the hymnal. We Enter God s Presence OPENING HYMN To Your Temple I Draw Near Christian Worship 226 Please stand Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. Congregation: (sung) Amen. CONFESSION OF SINS M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. 5 We Listen to God s Word FIRST LESSON 4 Say to those with fearful hearts, Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you. 5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6 Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. 7 The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs. Isaiah 35:4-7a (NIV) PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 146 Page 120 in the front of the hymnal SECOND LESSON James 1:17-27 (NIV) 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created. 19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid 5

6 of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it not forge ing what they have heard, but doing it they will be blessed in what they do. 26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. Please stand for the highlight of the service: the Gospel. GOSPEL After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings: C: (sung) Glory be to you, O Lord! Mark 7:31-37 (NIV) 31 Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. 32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him. 33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into 6

7 the man s ears. Then he spit and touched the man s tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, Ephphatha! (which means Be opened! ). 35 At this, the man s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly. 36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. He has done everything well, they said. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak. M: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: (sung) Praise be to you, O Christ! CONFESSION OF FAITH: THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 7

We pray that you will continue to utilize his service as a full-time professor to prepare the next generation of pastors to lead your church. 13 What happens to the money I put in this envelope? 100% of LWMS (Lutheran Women s Missionary Society) mission offerings are used for mission projects! Seventy-five cents of each dollar goes to home and world missions chosen by our local circuit; 25 cents of each dollar goes to home and world missions chosen by national LWMS. Offering envelopes have been distributed in church mailboxes and should be returned to Marjorie Gildersleeve (Ladies Guild treasurer) by next Sunday, September 16. 14 Announcements SUNDAY SCHOOL We are celebrating the start of a new year for Sunday School with the installation of the teachers at the 8 a.m. church service. The teachers are: Pre K-Kindergarten: Rachelle Barckhol and Ella Holderbecker in Room 3 Grades 1-2: Jeannie Konecne and Sophie Jones in Room 4 Grades 3-4: Isaiah Bi er and Paige Holderbecker in Room 1 Grades 5-6: Rachel Johnson in Mr. Bi er s Room Grades 7 and Up: Kari Ekhoff in Room 2 Music: Joy Holderbecker (Sunday School will sing in church on October 28.) Mr. Bi er and Donna Schroeder will help with child care during Adult Bible Class in the Moms & Tots room in the basement. WOMEN S BIBLE STUDY STARTING WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 AT 10AM Pastor is planning to start a women s Bible study starting on Wednesday, September 26 at 10 a.m. We are planning to study one of the books of the Bible. If you are interested in this, let Donna Schroeder or Pastor know. We picked a time to start the Bible class, but if you would like to come but this time doesn t work for you, please talk to Pastor or Donna. We will be talking about this at Ladies Guild, so please come so we can find a time that works well for the most people and to have your input as to the book we pick to study. 14

15 PLAYGROUND UPDATE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Thanks to generous donations to the playground fund, we have nearly reached our goal of $23,000. We will be starting construction soon and we are looking for volunteers to help. September 22 & 29 at 7 am are planned work days to get started. Please let James Quint ( jkarlq@paulbunyab.net) or Nathaniel Barckhol ( n.barck@hotmail.com) know if you are willing to help. CHOIR INVITATION Martin Luther said, ʺNext to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. Please consider joining choir. We rehearse on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. in the choir loft, starting on Tuesday, September 18. No special training is needed, and we welcome all voices. ST. MARK S NNO CELEBRATION/FEEDBACK EVENT SEPTEMBER 23 RD The NNO Planning Team is holding a celebration lunch on Sunday September 23, at noon, after second service. Pizza and salad will be served. Everyone is invited. After the lunch, we will have a feedback session to discuss ideas/ improvements that we can incorporate in next year s event. The NNO Team is compiling a list of ideas for discussion. Additional input is expected at the feedback session.
