1 First Presbyterian Church 512 Third Street SW Rochester, Minnesota Phone Service for the Lord s Day October 28, 2012 Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost 8:30 and 11 a.m. Welcome to worship this morning First Presbyterian Church welcomes families with young children. Staffed nursery care is available during worship. Audio from the worship service can be heard in the library (adjacent to the sanctuary) and social hall. If you are visiting because of medical treatment at Mayo Clinic we offer our prayers for healing. Our activities and programs are open to all, member and friend alike. We invite you to join us for coffee and fellowship in the social hall following the 8:30 service and in the atrium following the 11:00 service. * As a courtesy to others, please silence cell phones. * Gathering Prelude Be Thou My Vision arr. Cynthia Dobrinski Jubilate Deo Handbell Choir Our worship begins with the prelude. Let the power of the music speak to you of God s glory; let its quietness tell you of God s peace; let its beauty lift your hearts in prayer. Greeting and Welcome Please sign the Opportunity for Friendship Register and pass it to the person next to you. Call to Worship (8:30) Cynthia Kunzman (11:00) James Sessler We will bless the Lord at all times. Praise will continually be in our mouths. O magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt God s name together. When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and rescues them from their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted. We offer up our cries and praise together! Hymn 457 I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art TOULON Call to Reconciliation with God (please be seated) Remember how Jesus said, I have come not to condemn the world, but to save it. In confidence and hope, let us pray to almighty God. Silent Confession Kyrie Please stand if you are able. Hymns/Liturgy with 3 digits or less (1-605) are found in the hardcover The Presbyterian Hymnal. Hymns/Liturgy with 4 digits ( ) are found in the soft-cover Sing the Faith in the pew rack.
2 Responsive Prayer of Confession Holy Lord, our hearts cry out, Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me! But we are too often afraid to claim your mercy and healing with our voices. Help us Lord, to acknowledge before you and before each other that our healing comes from you and not our own efforts. Show us again the beauty of this world, the pain in our neighbor s heart, the silent cries for justice, and all the blessings you place on our path. Words of Life Hear the good news: The new creation is here. For the old has passed away and the new has come. In Christ, we are a new creation. Gloria Patri Reception of New Members (11:00) The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. Let us share a sign of the peace of Christ with one another! Prayer for Illumination The Word Lee J. Afdahl Copyright United Methodist Publishing. Used by permission. 2
3 Reading from the New Testament Hebrews 7:23-28 Anthem (8:30) Taste and See (Psalm 34) Randolph Currie Youth Choir and congregation (please join in refrain) I will bless the Lord at all times, His praise shall be ever on my lips, I will glory in the Lord forever, the lowly will hear, and be glad! (Refrain) Glorify the Lord with me, forever let us praise His name! I called out to God and He heard my cry; from all my fears, He set me free. (Refrain) Look to God and be happy, and never let your faces by sad! For our Father hears and answers when we call His Name, and comforts His children when they are afraid. (Refrain) (11:00) Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Thy Word Johann Walter Chancel Choir Time for All Our Worshippers (All ages are welcome to come forward!) Hymn 2233 Where Children Belong RITCHIE Youngsters through third grade may go to room E206 for Children s Activities. Pass Prayer Cards to the aisle. An usher will collect them. Reading from the Gospels Mark 10:46-52 This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Alleluia 111 (refrain) Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! GELOBT SEI GOTT Meditation A Declaration of Faith Rev. T. J. Parlette Our Response Dedication of Pledges Prayer of Consecration (in unison) O God, our gracious and generous creator, we gratefully acknowledge your ownership and recognize our stewardship. All we have is a trust from you. We thank you that through Christ s love, we have learned the relationship between giving and living. Teach us to give as loyal partners with him. We would pledge to you an honorable share of our income. May our pledges express our genuine, sincere faith and true loyalty. Use us and our offerings to extend the worldwide kingdom of him who loved us and gave himself for us. In his name we pray and pledge. Amen. Offering our Pledges to God Please come down the center aisle and place your pledges in the baskets on the communion table. The regular offering will be received later in the service. There are extra pledge cards in the pew racks if necessary. Prayer of Dedication (in unison) Almighty God, giver of every good and perfect gift, who has shown us that it is more blessed to give than to receive, we dedicate these pledges to the service of your church, humbly praying that all our gifts and energies may be used in the extension of your kingdom here on earth. Accept these pledges, we pray; multiply them in your service and then transform them into loving deeds of grace and mercy, given in Christ s name and to the everlasting glory of your name for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen. 3
