Let the power of the music speak to you of God s glory; let its quietness tell you of God s peace; let its beauty lift your hearts in prayer. Greeting and Welcome Please sign the Opportunity for Friendship Register and pass it to the person next to you. Opening Prayer Call to Worship Jesus Christ is risen today! Christ is risen, indeed! The tomb could not hold him. The grave is empty. Christ is risen! Jesus Christ is risen today! Christ is risen, indeed! (8:30) Jay Beck (11:00) Paul Steger Hymn 232 Jesus Christ Is Risen Today EASTER HYMN Call to Reconciliation (please be seated) Jesus rising from the dead assures us that we, too, have been given new life. Let us repent of our sin before God and one another, certain of God s mercy. Silent Confession Please stand if you are able.
2 Kyrie Unison Prayer of Confession All-knowing, all-powerful God, we confess that, even on this most holy day, we are unable to believe in the victory over death shown to us in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, our Lord. We confess our utter dependence on you not only for life but also for faith, hope, and love. Without your astonishing appearance to our ancestors and your stunning presence throughout the ages, we would be lost. Forgive us and transform us, that in every way our work and prayer will make whole what is broken and give peace on earth. Amen. Words of Life As Pope John Paul II once said, Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are Easter people and hallelujah is our song. By the grace of God and the witness of our ancestors, the good news of Jesus resurrection is our rock and our salvation. My friends, believe the Good News your sins are forgiven! Amen. Gloria Patri 581 Glory Be to the Father GREATOREX Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. Passing of the Peace Due to health concerns in this cold and flu season, please refrain from shaking hands and greet each other with a word of peace or a wave of the hand. The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. Let us share a sign of the peace of Christ with one another. The Word Anthem (8:30 and 11) This Is the Day (Psalm 118; I Corinthians 5:7) Edwin H. Lemare Chancel Choir This is the day which the Lord hath made, we will rejoice and be glad, rejoice and be glad in it. O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is gracious, because His mercy endureth forever. Alleluia, Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us, Alleluia, Alleluia! Amen, Amen. 3 Time for All Our Young Worshippers Hymn sung to All Things Bright and Beautiful ROYAL OAK Come, Lord Jesus, to this holy place, and bless the children here. Guide them, mold them in your gentle ways, to know your love so dear. Text by Judith Smithson. Pass Prayer Cards to the aisle. An usher will collect them. Children through third grade may go to room E206 for Kids Zone or are welcome to stay with their parents in worship. Children above third grade should stay in worship. Reading from the Gospels John 20:1-18 This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Alleluia from hymn 239 Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! GELOBT SEI GOTT Message Who Is the Fool? Rev. T. J. Parlette A moment for reflection may God continue to speak to us in the silence. Our Response Hymn 240 Alleluia! Alleluia! Give Thanks ALLELUIA NO. 1 Affirmation of Faith As Easter people, we believe God is Lord of both life and death. We believe that in an astounding act of grace, Jesus suffered and died on the cross to save us from our sins. We believe, three days later, Jesus was raised from the dead, promising us salvation, not because we deserve it, but out of love, through grace. We believe we are called to respond to that gift of grace, not out of duty, but in gratitude, to seek peace, care for the ill, clothe the naked, feed the hungry, empower the oppressed and welcome the outcast; to carry on Christ s work until he comes again. Because, as Easter people, we are confident Christ will come again. Alleluia! Amen. Offertory At the Offertory Christ Is Risen [1 Corinthians 15: 20, 21, 53, 55 (KJV, 1611)] Paul Sjolund Chancel Choir Christ is risen, Christ is risen, now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first-fruits of them that sleep. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For this corruptible, must put on incorruption, and this mortal, must put on immortality. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? Now is Christ risen from the dead. Alleluia Walton Music Corporation. All rights reserved. OneLicense.net A , Offertory Response 609 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures high and low. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise God, in Jesus fully known: Creator, Word, and Spirit one. Alleluia, alleluia! alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! LASST UNS ERFREUEN Unison Prayer of Dedication Holy God, you shower us with gifts so abundant we cannot measure them all. Bless these gifts today for the sake of those in need, in the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier, one God, now and forever. Amen. We are also deeply grateful for how the church staff and congregation honored him with such a personal Memorial Service and luncheon. Thank you to Sue, Carol, Pastors T.J. Parlette and Jay Rowland, Organist Lee Afdahl, and countless others who made Steve s Day a beautiful testimony and memory. As is true for you, we, too, miss him already. I m not perfect, and I will indulge in pizza and sweets on occasion. The goal is to make a majority of your decisions good for your body. So listen to your body, and treat it like a temple. (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) Sometimes we listen to that voice that says, Go ahead, another cup of ice cream, or that extra helping of cheesy Ravioli. It tastes oh, so good. Yes, we re human and as humans we often listen to our urges and not rational advice. We often, then, suffer the consequences, whether it be heart disease, obesity, cancer, etc. Some diseases we have more control over than others.
