2 Kyrie Unison Prayer of Confession Forgive us, Lord, for sometimes living as if Easter had never taken place. We have allowed prophecies of doom to darken our thinking. We have wrung our hands helplessly because of the evil which surrounds us. We have allowed the pain of bereavement to blind us to the promise of reunion. Enable us, Lord, to cast aside the dark attitude of despair and gloom, and may we reflect in our lives the joyful reality of the resurrection. Amen. Words of Life Hear the Good News! God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Thanks be to God! Amen. Gloria Patri Passing of the Peace The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. Let us share a sign of the peace of Christ with one another! Anthem (8 and 9:30) This Is the Day (Psalm 118:24) Jacobus Gallus (Handl) Chancel Choir ed. Paul Thomas This is the day, the day the Lord hath made: we will all rejoice, rejoice, be glad in it. Reading from the Gospel Matthew 28:1-10 This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Alleluia from hymn 239 Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! GELOBT SEI GOTT Message From a Whisper to a Shout Rev. T. J. Parlette A Festival of Resurrection I believe that Jesus died on the cross, his hands and feet held to the wood by metal spikes. I believe that his body was pierced by the soldier s spear, and even the sun was darkened as all creation grieved the death of God s eternal Son. 3

4 I believe that Jesus body was placed in a borrowed tomb, where it lay for three days. (A silent pause) I believe that the power of God brought life to his dead body and rolled the stone away from the entrance so all might see that Jesus was no longer there. I believe that the unbelievable story of the women was true, just as the angel had announced: He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Hymn 254 That Easter Day with Joy Was Bright PUER NOBIS NASCITUR I believe that there is no force in the universe that could stop, hinder, contain, or successfully oppose the risen Savior, my Lord, Jesus Christ. No nails are long enough to hold him to any cross unless he wills it to be so. No tomb can be sealed so tightly by Pilate, or Herod, or Caesar himself. Were there an army of a thousand guarding the tomb, it would make no difference. Jesus said he would lay down his life and take it up again. And he did. I believe that Jesus appeared to eleven discouraged, defeated, demoralized disciples in a room where the doors were locked and all hope was lost. I believe that when he showed them his nail-pierced hands and his spear-pierced side, they fell at his feet and cried out, My Lord and my God. I believe that in the days that followed, hundreds saw him alive. All their doubt was removed; their fear was gone. What could the world do to them? Jesus was alive! Hymn 240 Alleluia, Alleluia! Give Thanks ALLELUIA NO. 1 I believe that Jesus lives today as powerfully and perfectly alive as he was two thousand years ago, and for all time past and yet to come. I believe he empowers his followers to follow in his footsteps, fight forces of evil, and find their peace and joy and eternal hope in him. I believe that Jesus calls women, men and children to join him in changing the world, one heart and one life at a time, starting with their own. We believe all this, Because we believe in the resurrection! Hymn 248 Christ Is Risen! Shout Hosanna! ODE TO JOY Our Response Prayers of the People and Lord s Prayer (using debts and debtors ) Offertory At the Offertory Christ the Lord Is Risen Again John Rutter Chancel Choir Christ the Lord is risen again! Christ hath broken ev ry chain! Hark the angels shout for joy. Singing evermore on high, Alleluia! He who gave for us his life, who for us endur d the strife, is our Paschal Lamb today! We too sing for joy and say Alleluia! He who bore all pain and loss Alleluia Comfortless upon the cross, - Alleluia Lives in glory now on high, - Alleluia Pleads for us, and hears our cry, - Alleluia! Now he bids us tell abroad Alleluia How the lost may be restor d, - Alleluia How the penitent forgiv n, - Alleluia How we too may enter heav n. Alleluia! Thou, our Paschal Lamb indeed, Christ today thy people feed; take our sins and guilt away, that we all may sing for ay, Alleluia! 1971 Oxford University Press. All rights reserved. 5 Offertory Response 609 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures high and low. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise God, in Jesus fully known: Creator, Word, and Spirit one. Alleluia, alleluia! alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Unison Prayer of Dedication On this day of resurrection we give you thanks and praise, O Lord. Through Christ s death and resurrection you have given us new hope and new life through the forgiveness of our sins and the promise of eternal life. Use these gifts, we pray, that others may learn of your great love. Amen.
