At a first read one would be right to say this is about the Eucharist. However, the first section is about something more fundamental, the divinity of Christ. We sort of just take this for granted, but throughout history it has not been so, being the occasion for many to slip into heresy. We call the union of Jesus divinity and humanity the Hypostatic Union. The front cover of the bulletin has the picture of the oldest icon of Christ and notice the two different facial expressions, one for the human nature and the other divine nature of Christ. The Hypostatic Union: The Catholic Position - author Joe Heschmeyer An Antiphon for Lauds puts it like this: Marvelous is the mystery proclaimed today: man s nature is made new as God becomes man; he remains what he was and becomes what he was not. Yet each nature stays distinct and forever undivided. That s the Hypostatic Union in a nutshell. The Second Person of the Trinity, the Divine Logos, was (and is) God from all eternity. In the Incarnation, he entered space and time as Jesus of Nazareth. While preserving his Divinity whole and intact, he humbled himself by taking on our humanity. This meant creating a human body and also a human soul for himself. Jesus wasn t simply a mask the Logos wore, or an avatar, or anything of the sort. Rather, the Man Jesus is the Second Person of the Trinity, and vice versa. The Second Person of the Trinity united his human soul perfectly to his Divine Self. In doing so, he bridged the gulf created by sin between God and man. This is one of the reasons that we refer to Jesus by the titles Son of Man and Son of God without any tension: he s the perfect God-Man (see Matthew 26:63-64, in which the two titles are used interchangeably). The Heresies: Nestorianism and Monophysitism Compare what Catholicism teaches on Christology, compared with two popular fifth century heresies, Nestorianism and Monophysitism: Catholicism Two Natures One Person Nestorianism Two Natures Two Persons Monophysitism One Nature One Person Here s the thing about the Hypostatic Union: like the Trinity, it seems needlessly complex; like the Trinity, it s a pretty counter-intuitive theological claim; but like the Trinity, it explains the scriptural evidence better than all of the (much simpler) heresies. Sometimes, the truth is just more complicated than fiction, and we shouldn t be surprised that describing God is one of those times, whether we re talking about the Three Persons of the Trinity, or the Dual Natures of Christ. RELIGIOUS ED FOR GRADES K-11 A Note From Our Parish Faith Formation Coordinators: Hello IHM Religious Education Families! We can't believe that it's already August and that we are preparing for another year of Religious Education and Family Formation here at IHM. We hope you are your family have had a refreshing and fun summer! Thank you for your patience as we have been busy planning and scheduling the upcoming year of classes! Please note two important details about registration this year. 1. Registration is going to look slightly different this year, as there will not be an official "kick-off meeting" as in years past. This year we are going to have three different "open registration times" in which we invite you (and your families) to come and meet us to register and to gather the important information we have for you. We feel that this small change will be a great way for not only you to gather the needed information and material for the year, but will give us an opportunity to get to know each other! Below are the options for which we are asking that you drop in at some point during the block of time to register and meet with us briefly (light refreshments will be provided)! 5 ADULT FAITH ENRICHMENT RCIA Joining the Catholic Church Are you (or is someone you know) thinking of becoming Catholic? Are you baptized, but haven t received your First Holy Communion and/or Confirmation? RCIA sessions are held from October through April on Sunday mornings between 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. in the parish office conference room (typically 3 Sundays per month). Mission Appeal Weekend August Father Febin Barose, C.P., a Passionist Missionary, will preach the annual mission appeal at our Holy Masses the weekend of August Father Barose will present the needs of the Passionist Missions of Holy Cross Province. The American Passionists have missions in India, Korea, Japan, the Philippines, the West Indies, and in Alabama. This annual collection gives us the opportunity to participate in the Missionary Work of the Church. Please be generous. Checks should be made out payable to IHM. Your gifts will be deposited by the parish, and a single check will be forwarded to the mission office. Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Wednesday, August 15, 2018 The Assumption of Mary is a holy day of obligation. On this day we recall that Mary was assumed, body and soul, into heaven. Holy Mass times at IHM on this day are 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. To commemorate this solemnity, the parish office will be closed on Wednesday, August 15. The Sisters of Mary Morning Star invite you to join them on Tuesday, August 14, 7:30 p.m.-8:45 p.m. at IHM Church for a meditated Eucharistic Holy Hour to celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. We will close with a candlelit Eucharistic procession. Everyone is welcome! 7 2018 Youth Mission Trips July Serving Our IHM Parishioners Several IHM parishioners were blessed to have youth from Love Begins Here come to their homes and assist with some needed chores! The students came from all over the Diocese of Madison, spending the week at IHM and performing acts of service here at our school, at parishioner s homes, the Schoenstatt shrine, and Second Harvest Foodbank. 7 7
