2 March 5, 2017 First Sunday of Lent Mass Intentions Monday, March 6 No Mass Tuesday, March 7 8:30 a.m. Ferdinand and Laurette Henning Wednesday, March 8 7:00 a.m. Dorothy Casey Thursday, March 9 8:30 a.m. Darlene and Delbert Imhoff Friday, March 10 7:00 a.m. Patricia Weninger From the Pastor s Desk My Family of Faith This Sunday marks the first Sunday in our Lenten observance. Holy Church invites us to increased works of fasting, almsgiving, and prayer. But this invitation to a spirit of sobriety is also communicated through the liturgy. For one, you may notice less use of musical instruments including the organ. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, paragraph 313 ask specifically that during the Lenten season the organ and other musical instruments be used only in necessity, that is when they are needed to support the singing. Exceptions are Laetare Sunday (Fourth Sunday of Lent), Solemnities, and Feasts. In addition, it is common for the altar to be decorated with flowers during most of the year. But in Lent we keep the sanctuary very bare, after all the desert is a barren place. The General Instruction states that during Lent it is forbidden for the altar to be decorated with flowers. Exceptions, however, are again Laetare Sunday (Fourth Sunday of Lent), Solemnities, and Feasts (G.I.R.M. 305). Why all of this? Lent is a time of giving up, not giving in; it s not about overdoing, but doing without. It s a cliché, but it s true: these days, less is more. It also seems to me that this sense of desolation and bare-ness will also make us appreciate even more the explosion of light, color, fragrance and life we will encounter Easter morning, when blossoms, buds, lilies and azaleas burst forth to celebrate that Jesus Chirst is Risen from the Dead! And at that, all of creation world will exult. Prayers for a fruitful Lent, Saturday, March 11 8:30 a.m. Rounds Family 5:00 p.m. Watson Family Sunday, March 12 8:00 a.m. Linda Millard 10:15 a.m. For the people of IHM WELCOME TO OUR PARISH FAMILY Anne Cooper Angela Jenkins Introducing Formed - A Gift To Our Parishioners A Gift To Our Parishioners Would you like to grow closer to Jesus? Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted. All women of the parish are invited to attend! OREMUS "Lord, Teach us to Pray" The normal ebb and flow of prayer is consolation and desolation. We all experience times when we feel God very close to us and other times when it seems as though He is not near. Dryness is part of the spiritual life. St. Ignatius teaches us that spiritual desolation can be "disquiet, lack of confidence, in temptation, lost hope, don't sense love, and as if separated from God." When we experience this type of desolation, it is important to remember: God always desires communion with us He doesn't punish us with desolation. We must be patient and reject the thoughts that come from desolation because they do not come from God (they are not true). When we are in a time of spiritual desolation or dryness, a good question to ask God is, "What are You trying to show me or do for me?" Often times God allows us to experience the feeling of being separated from Him (which we never really are) so that a greater good may come about in us. You are welcome to join us in the IHM church meeting room every Tuesday through March 14. As we move forward, consider using some of the resources below to create a favorable environment to let God find you. Prayer must be an intentional commitment. He wants to speak to your heart.
