3 Liturgical Bits & Bytes What is the importance of the responsorial psalm text? The psalm, taken from the Sacred Scripture, is the Word of God. In the psalm, we are responding to the Word of God with the Word of God. The psalms have been chosen because of their relevance to the readings of the day and help us interpret them. One description I have heard is that the responsorial psalm is the aura within which we understand the rest of the readings. Sunday Readings & Reflections Saint of the Week Saint Hugh of Grenoble On April 1st the Church celebrates the Memorial of Saint Hugh of Grenoble. St. Hugh was born into a noble family at Chateauneuf d Isere, France in He chose the religious life, becoming a canon at the Cathedral in Valence. In 1080, when only 27 years old and not yet ordained a priest, he was made bishop of Grenoble. Strongly attracted to solitude, Hugh would have preferred to be a monk, but his several requests to be relieved of his duties as bishop were turned down. He gave invaluable assistance to Saint Bruno, helping him in the foundation of the first Carthusian community at Chartreuse. After fifty-two years as bishop, he died at Grenoble on April 1, Two years later he was canonized by Pope Innocent II. Types of Psalms Most of the psalms fit into three basic types with some subdivisions. The first type is Psalms of Lament, an expression of grief or sorrow moving to hope and finally to praise. These are usually divided into two groups, Penitential Psalms and Imprecatory (or Cursing) Psalms. Thanksgiving Psalms recall a previous call for help, acknowledge God s deliverance and end in praise. Two subdivisions of the Thanksgiving Psalm are Salvation History Psalms, which in some way refer to the exodus story, and Songs of Trust, which reflect on God s actions resulting in trust. The final type is Hymnic Psalms or Psalms of Praise. These begin and end with praise of God, describing in the body of the psalm the basis for the praise. At liturgy we rarely hear an entire psalm, making it sometimes difficult to know the type. See if you can tell, or go home and read the entire psalm to clarify the context. Prayer of the Week Lenten Prayer O God, who through your Word reconcile the human race to yourself in a wonderful way, grant, we pray, that with prompt devotion and eager faith the Christian people may hasten toward the solemn celebrations to come. through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Fast and Abstinence During Lent All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (from meat) in the Church in the United States. Good Friday (April 14) is a day of fast and abstinence (from meat) in the universal Church. The Law of Abstinence binds Catholics aged 14 and older. The Law of Fasting binds Catholics aged 18 and over, until the beginning of their 60 th year. Volunteers Needed St. John s Food Pantry is looking for volunteers for the 3rd Wednesday of every month from 9AM to 1PM. They are also looking for help on the day before to help unload the food truck. All volunteers must be able to lift. Mrs. Russo, our assistant principal/athletic director/teacher does a Life Sports program at school. She takes our middle school students kayaking and hiking in the fall, snowshoeing and cross country skiing in the winter, and teaches them tennis, disc golf, and golf in the spring. Our students just enjoyed the March snowstorm by cross country skiing around the school on our groomed trails, courtesy of Parks and Rec.
