3 Saint of the Week Stewardship of Treasure Offertory for Aug $15, Average offertory to date - $16, The budget is based on a weekly average offertory of $15, per week. There will be a 2nd collection next weeknd for the Catholic University of America and Special Education Needs. Thank you for your continued support of our parish. Liturgical Bits & Bytes Receiving the Sacred Body and the Sacred Blood Although we believe that Christ is truly and totally present in both the consecrated bread and the consecrated wine, the fullness of the sign is receiving both. Christ said, Take and eat, and Take and drink. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal states: The sign of communion is more complete when given under both kinds, since in that form the sign of the Eucharistic meal appears more clearly. The intention of Christ that the new and eternal covenant be ratified in his blood is better expressed, as is the relation of the Eucharistic banquet to the heavenly banquet." Communion Procession Have you ever thought about it that way? That coming up to receive the Body and Blood of Christ is a procession? That is what it s called. It s not just getting in line to receive for oneself, but a processing up together in communion with one another. That is one reason there is a communion song. During communion a song is sung. This should be easy or repetitive or familiar enough to not require using the songbooks. The song is to emphasize the unity (communion) of the people with one another as well as with Christ. Saint Gratis of Aosta On September 7, the Church celebrates St. Gratis of Aosta. Gratus was bishop of Aosta, in northern Italy from 450 to 470. What little is known about him indicates that he almost certainly took part in a provincial council convoked by the bishop of Milan. He was much loved by the faithful and by all the church of Aosta. He is usually depicted in episcopal vestments, sometimes in the act of venerating the head of St. John the Baptist, and is invoked against lightening, storms, animals that damage crops and to obtain rain. Now that I'm preparing to go back to the seminary this fall, I wanted to thank everyone for the warm reception I received here at Corpus Christi Parish. It was a real pleasure being able to meet all of you and I only wish I had more time to get to know you better. (Matthew 16:24) Adult: In what concrete ways do you take up your cross and follow Jesus? Youth: When has it been difficult to be a follower of Jesus? Prayer of the Week Prayer When Living with Cancer Lord God, even before I was born, you knit me together in my mother s womb. Every cell of my body you know, and every inch of my skin you yourself shaped onto my flesh and bones. Not a single hair on my head goes uncounted, and no tear of mine escapes your gaze. So I know you can make me whole again. From the depths of this disease, I cry out to you, O God, For I am convinced that neither cancer, not tumor, nor chemo, nor radiation, nor fear, nor doubt, nor isolation, nor pain will be able to separate me from your love and the wonder of the person you created me to be. From my first breath, you made me holy. Fashion me again with your Spirit, and fill this sacred and broken body with new life, that every breath to my last may proclaim your mighty and wondrous deeds. Amen.

4 In Our Parish Faith Formation ELEMENTARY FAITH FORMATION Classes are held at the Faith Formation Center attached to St. John Catholic School, September-May. Faith Formation for grades K - 5 will be starting Sunday, September 17. Registration forms have been sent in the mail. If you did not receive one, please call Elaine at the Faith Formation Office, Junior High Youth Ministry information will be available soon. HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY Sunday Evenings 6:00-8:00PM Youth Ministry Room on the 2nd Floor at St. John School (enter by the Grotto) We are looking for teens that are interested in helping to plan events for other teens, including prayer, games, service activities, fundraisers, advertising, and more! If you want to be part of this, we will have our first planning team meeting of the year on Sun., Sept. 10 from 6-8PM at St. John's School. See you there! Missionary Appeal at Notre Dame Bring your own lawn chair and stay for the afternoon! Lot s of Good Food is Planned for the BBQ Hotdogs and chicken kabobs on the grill Fresh popped popcorn and chips Large assortment of baked goods And much more! Calling all bakers!! Pie Baking Contest!! Fr. Dan and Fr. Matt will be judging a pie baking contest. Bring your special pie that day to see if it will be their favorite and win the top prize. After the judging the pies will be shared with all in attendance. Pies should have homemade crust and filling and be in a disposable pie plate. Yard Games, Face Painting, Nail Art, Crafts, Balloon Animals and More! Plenty of activities for children of all ages. We are excited to announce that the Patriot s Game will be shown at the event! Special thank you to Fortin s Home Furnishings! Donation Trees have been set up in both churches. If you are able to make some individually wrapped baked goods for the event please take a tag from the tree and bring the goodies when you come to the Parish Fun Day! This weekend we welcome Sr. Elena from the Sisterhood of St. Elizabeth Convent. Founded in 1999, the sisters of Saint Elisabeth Convent have been rendering spiritual, social and financial assistance to the sick and the suffering, who stay at the National Psychiatric Clinic in Minsk, Belarus. This clinic includes a boarding home for children with special needs, a boarding home for mentally challenged adults, a rehabilitation center for mentally challenged children, a municipal hospital, and a TB clinic. They also support shelters for homeless, drug or alcohol addicts, ex-prisoners and less able men and women. Please be as generous as possible. ST. JOHN CATHOLIC SCHOOL South Garand St., Winslow Our students and staff have returned to school with so much excitement and enthusiasm. We have many great things planned this year. Word of mouth is our best advertising so please stay tuned and follow our students accomplishments and share with friends. We have a opening for a part-time aftercare position. A person selected for this position will be responsible for supervising children in the aftercare program. Qualifications 1. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and meet the requirements of the licensing agency. 2. Must have a friendly personality and enjoy working with children. 3. Must be willing to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with the School s program and mission.

Proceeds benefit Catholic Charities Maine new environmental program for parishes, ECO-JOY. Questions? Lord, Teach Me To Pray Lord, Teach Me To Pray is a prayer series based on Ignatian Spirituality. Part 1, Praying Christian Virtues, helps deepen prayer life, and discover what to do for dryness and obstacles in prayer. It also introduces the different methods of Ignatian prayer, meditation, contemplation and Consciousness Examen. Small groups will meet with trained facilitators for 2 hours once a week for 12 weeks to pray and faith share. Part 1 begins on Thurs., Sept. 7 at 6:00PM in the Faith Formation Center in Winslow. Catholic cemeteries are important in the life of the Church It is natural to desire burial near those with whom we have formed bonds of friendship and love. As Christians, however, we also have spiritual bonds with one another that exist in virtue of our shared faith. Throughout history, Christians have been buried near other Christians in places that have been blessed and dedicated for prayer and remembrance. Although Catholics may be buried or interred in non-catholic cemeteries, burial in a Catholic cemetery reaffirms that we remain brothers and sisters in Christ, united even in death. Indeed, when the Church gathers at a Catholic cemetery to commend the deceased to God, we find ourselves surrounded by the graves and tombs of those who died in the hope that they, too, may share in new and everlasting life. In Catholic cemeteries, the faith of the deceased resonates with the living, and we realize that they did not die in vain. In those circumstances when the deceased is buried or interred in a non-catholic cemetery, the priest or deacon blesses the site of burial or interment.
