3 Saint of the Week Saint Bernadette Soubirous April 16 th is the Memorial of Saint Bernadette Soubirous, but because her feast falls on Easter Sunday this year it is not officially celebrated. Bernadette was born at Lourdes, France on January 7, At the age of fourteen, near a cave at Massabielle, she witnessed the first of eighteen apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who identified herself as the Immaculate Conception. At twenty-two, Bernadette entered the convent of Saint-Gildard, the mother house of the congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Nevers. She spent the remainder of her life in that convent working as an infirmary assistant, and later a sacristan. People admired her humility and spirit of sacrifice. Bernadette died on April 16, She was canonized by on December 8, 1933 (the Feast of the Immaculate Conception) by Pope Pius XI. St. Bernadette is the patroness of illness, people ridiculed for their piety, poverty, shepherds, and shepherdesses. Her body lies incorrupt in the convent chapel in Nevers. Sunday Readings & Reflections Readings for Sunday, April 9, Palm Sunday Obedience and Humility Procession Gospel Matthew 21:1-11 (triumphal entry into Jerusalem) Reading I Isaiah 50:4-7 (salvation only through the Lord s servant) Reading II Philippians 2:6-11 (imitating Christ s humility) Gospel Matthew 26:14-27:66 (the passion of Jesus) Key Passage: Jesus emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point to death-even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:7-8) Adult: We are called to die to ourselves in love for others. How do you live that in your own life? Youth: How do you allow Jesus to live in your heart? 4 Liturgical Bits & Bytes Holy Week Holy Week is the most sacred time in the life of a parish community. It is what we have been preparing for all during Lent. It is the highlight of what our faith life is all about. So don't miss the best part! As we enter the holiest of weeks, know that your presence at these liturgies is important. Each service is unique. The solemn liturgies for Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday are among the very best things we do in the church. Don't miss these celebrations! Yes, they are longer than usual. Yes, they are different, but isn't that to be expected? Special events always cause us to change our ordinary routine way of doing things. That should not surprise us. Join your parish community for these special celebrations. You won't be disappointed. The celebrations of this holy week are a climactic conclusion to our Lenten experience. As we move from the "hosannas" of Palm Sunday to the remembrance table of Holy Thursday, may our faith strengthen us to go from the Good Friday Cross of Calvary to the living waters of Holy Saturday and to the joy of Easter "Alleluias!" Holy Thursday and the Washing of the Feet Each year on Holy Thursday the church calls us to wash feet. We all need to be washed by the healing love of Jesus. Holy Thursday is a night of service and so all of us need to be reminded that Jesus washes us so that we in turn can wash others. For almost all of us there is a certain discomfort or embarrassment with this command of Jesus. Yet foot washing on Holy Thursday is a powerful symbol of our identity as a servant people. It calls for great humility for those who wash and for those who are washed. (Peter was the first to object to this gesture and you remember, of course, Jesus words to him.) Those who participate in this ritual note that it is very moving for them. Remember the words of Jesus to Peter, If I do not wash your feet, you can have no part with me. Holy Thursday Mass is at 6:00PM at St. John Friday of the Passion of the Lord On this day the centerpiece of the solemn liturgy is the reflective listening to the Passion of St. John s Gospel which presents Jesus as the sovereign king who willingly lays down his life for those he loves. We venerate not the figure of the crucified, but the cross as the symbol of victory and salvation. We solemnly present our lenten intentions for our broken brothers and sisters throughout the entire world. There is no entrance procession because we are continuing the Triduum liturgy begun the day before on Holy Thursday. There is no recessional because this Triduum liturgy will continue and conclude the next night with the Easter Vigil. All three are one liturgy, each day focusing on one aspect of the Paschal Mystery which brought about our salvation. The service on Good Friday is a communion service, since there is no consecration and all receive Eucharist from hosts consecrated on Holy Thursday. The communion rite, therefore, is done with the greatest simplicity. On this day of the Lord s Passion it is almost as though everything we do is done with greater reverence, attention and devotion. The simple refrain from the day says it best: Behold, behold the wood of the Cross on which is hung our salvation. O come, let us adore. Good Friday Liturgy is at 6:00PM at St. John The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night The Vigil of Easter is a day of emptiness. The church waits at the Lord s tomb. The altar is bare, the church is empty. Mass is not celebrated. Even the Vigil celebration has the feeling of prayerful waiting. The Vigil celebration is begun only after nightfall. This is not an anticipated Sunday Mass, but a vigil in the strictest sense. The Service begins with LIGHT. The Easter fire is blessed. The Paschal Candle is lit, carried to its place of honor, and the great Easter proclamation, the Exsultet, is sung. The next major part of this service is the WORD. On this most holy night the story of our salvation is retold and slowly we approach the message of great joy: the Alleluia! The Gospel announcing the good news of resurrection is proclaimed and a homily is shared. The third part of the service is perhaps the highlight: WATER. All of Lent we have been reflecting on the process of initiation for our adult candidates in the RCIA process. This is the night that we bless the Easter water, we profess our faith, we baptize our catechumens, and we renew our own Baptism through the ritual of sprinkling. Confirmation, a sacrament separated from Baptism for most of us, is celebrated as part of this rite of initiation. The final section of the Vigil is EUCHARIST. The newly initiated bring bread and wine to the table where they will share Eucharist with us for the first time. The dismissal with its double alleluia is sung and thus begins the season of Easter: the great fifty days of celebration which will culminate with our celebration of the feast of Pentecost.
