3 Sunday Readings & Reflections Readings for Sunday, March 4 Trust and Doubt Reading I Exodus 20:1-17 (The ten commandments) Reading II 1 Corinthians 1:22-25 (The wisdom and folly of the cross) Gospel John 2:13-25 (Cleansing of the temple) Key Passage: For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. (1 Corinthians 1:22-23) Adult: When has the message of the cross seemed absurd to you, and when have you seen its wisdom? Youth: What puzzles you in the gospel stories? Liturgical Bits & Bytes - Lent Ways to Evangelize During Lent Abstinence: So why aren t you eating pepperoni pizza on Friday? You love pepperoni pizza. You eat it all the time. Suddenly, you can t have it on Fridays?! What could possibly be going on? It must be that Catholic thing, again. Absolutely! On Fridays during Lent, we particularly remember the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. In memory of this great sacrifice, we continue the tradition of penance and sacrifice abstaining from meat on Fridays is an outward manifestation of an interior reality: the conversion of our hearts. As Pope John Paul II has said, In fact, the external aspects of fasting, though important, do not convey the full measure of the practice. Joined to the practice should be a sincere desire for inner purification, readiness to obey the divine will and thoughtful solidarity with our brothers and sisters, especially the very poor. Christ himself fasted and prayed in the desert. Through fasting and praying, we unite ourselves with the sacrifice of Christ and offer him reparation for our sins and failings. It s a little thing to give him in the face of his ultimate sacrifice, but what a grace that our God accepts and loves little gifts! Please pick one up or stop by the office to introduce yourself and get one. Saint of the Week Saint Casimir On March 4th the Church celebrates the Memorial of Saint Casimir. He was born in 1458, son of King Casimir IV of Poland and Elizabeth of Austria. He fled the life of ease and privileges, and when the Hungarians deposed their king in 1471 and offered him the crown, he refused it. He spent his brief life (he died at age twenty-five) following ascetic ideals and assisting his father in the rule of the kingdom. He was canonized in Casimir is often depicted as a youth in regal clothes, often with a royal crown nearby. He is invoked against illnesses caused by chills and carnal temptations. He is the patron saint of Lithuania. Prayer of the Week Prayer in Time of Violence I have to admit, God, that sometimes it s hard to even call your name. On days like this I can t help but think that if you had been there, we wouldn't be here here in a world where so much violence has changed everything here where such bloodshed fills today s news even as many more die each day, unnoticed and alone. But here is where we need you, and here is where we cry to you. Be here with us, Lord, be here. Let us be angry for what has been done, but don t let us be consumed by it that we no longer recognize ourselves as your creation. Give peace to the children. Unbind them from the bonds of grief and fear that they may become again children of joy, of love, of trust, and hope. And not today, Lord, but in time, if there s at all any room in our hearts to forgive, then so let it be, for we all need to be created again. Be here with us, Lord, be here, right where we are, as broken as we are. Be here with us, Lord, be here. Amen.

The Grant will be awarded for the academic year in the amounts of $ each semester and may be used to defray any expenses incurred. Graduating high school students or any student currently attending any university or technical school who are active practicing Catholics are encouraged to apply.
