3 PASTORAL MESSAGE Thus did Joseph speak to the Virgin, Mary, what is this I see in you? I cannot understand it, and I am amazed and my mind is struck with dismay. Therefore get out of my sight quickly. Mary, what is this I see in you? Instead of honor, you have brought me shame, instead of joy, you have caused me sorrow; and instead of being praised, you have brought me reproof. I can no longer endure the reproach of men. When I received you from the temple by the hands of the priests, you were an innocent girl consecrated to the Lord. So what is this that I see now? (Great Hours of Christmas) All too often in the Christmas story, Joseph is overlooked. We spend little time thinking about him, or analyzing what he might be going through emotionally, mentally, or spiritually. Yet during the service of the Great Hours of Christmas, the hymnographer tries to place himself within Joseph s shoes and ask what is he going through now that this young girl, whom he was to protect, is suddenly pregnant. What he presents is immense shame and equal levels of doubt. Joseph cannot believe that Mary would be pregnant, let alone the story she tells him about how it happened. In this way, of all the biblical figures who are present for, or associated with Christ s birth, we probably share the most in common with Joseph. Who has not been faced with the impossible and doubted God s work? Who has not mediated on what it means that God became man and dwelt among us and not been faced with a smattering of disbelief? The question then is not how do we respond if we stumble into doubt, but rather how do we respond when we doubt. We must only look to the words of the same hymnographer just a short distance further in the same service. Again, channeling Joseph, he writes I, says he, have searched the Prophets and received a revelation from an Angel; and convinced am I that Mary shall give birth to God in ways surpassing all interpretation. Joseph s doubts did not push him further away from God, instead they drew him in closer. Because he doubted he searched the Prophets, meaning he read the scriptures. He investigated, he examined. And during that process, seeing his ardent desire to understand that which caused him doubt, God sent His angel to explain. Quite interesting as well is the fact that even though he searched of his own accord, and an Angel revealed God s plan to him, Joseph still describes what is about to happen as something surpassing all interpretation. Herein we see a threefold process when it comes to doubt in faith. First, like Joseph, we are to respond to our own doubts with fervent investigation. There is no issue in questioning God, but only in questioning God and not seeking an answer. From there our doubts are met with the illumination of God s knowledge. This is a direct response by God to our efforts to understand. Doubts that are left uninvestigated do not lead to the revelation of the Divine plan. Finally, our understanding through inquiry and God s revelation leads to the peaceful affirmation that although I may now understand, or my doubt has been replaced with strong faith, the mystery of God surpasses my interpretation. Look at Joseph and see that it was in reality his doubts that lead him to strengthen his own faith. Do not fear the doubts you may have, rather follow in the path of Joseph. Search the Prophets. Ask further questions. Examine and explore that which is causing a struggle. Only when we truly wish to hear the answers to our questions will God respond with them. I pray that like Joseph, we spend this Christmas season with a newfound love and respect for our Lord and that His birth may bring to you the same peace and clarity in your life that Joseph found after wrestling with his doubt. + Fr. Panagiotis

4 Q&A with Fr. Panagiotis In Luke 9:23-27 when Jesus said that some of the disciples will live to see the reign of God in power. What does this mean? Does he mean they will see the Holy Spirit at work? If so, all but Judas saw this, right? So was he basically singling out Judas in telling them this? Or is there more to it? First we must place this passage within its wider context within the narrative of Luke s Gospel. Right after Christ has this conversation with His disciples, Luke jumps ahead eight days in the events of Christ s life. Now, either nothing of consequence took place in those eight days, or he is trying to connect the two events by deliberately moving from one to the next. It seems that Luke intentionally skips over those eight days so that we could move seamlessly from the statement There are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God (Luke 9.27), to the Transfiguration, which is introduced with the phrase, Now eight days after saying these things, Jesus took with Him Peter, and John, and James, and went up on the mountain to pray (Luke 9.28). While on the mountain, there takes place the miracle of the Transfiguration (Luke ). As a reminder, the transfiguration is a moment where Christ revealed the full glory of His divinity to His three chosen disciples. His face and clothing radiated light, and Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with Him. If we look at the context, and the connection it appears that Luke is pointing to, we see that the statement There are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God is actually fulfilled in the very next passage. In that case, Christ is not calling out Judas, or even the other 9 disciples who were not with Him on Mt Tabor. He is simply foreshadowing that a select few of them will be shown the glory of God s Kingdom, before His death and resurrection. The remainder of the disciples (Judas excluded) will see the Kingdom of God when they see and interact with Christ after His Resurrection, at His ascension, and when they receive the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Shifting gears a little bit, when St. Ambrose of Milan writes and preaches about Luke 9.27, he instead chooses to focus on what this means for the Christians living after Christ s ascension. He sees this promise that there are those who will not taste death before seeing the Kingdom of God as fulfilled in every Christian s life when they participate in the Divine Liturgy. As the Church understands the Divine Liturgy as an experience of the Kingdom of God made present here on earth, St. Ambrose argues that when we are in the Divine Liturgy we do not taste death, but rather taste life ie the body and blood of Christ. All common food simply delays death, but the eucharist gives eternal life. Thus eating common food is to taste death and receiving Holy Communion is to taste everlasting life. That food of everlasting life, which differs from all other food that ultimately cannot save us from death, is only provided during the Divine Liturgy, an experience of God s Kingdom. So we have both a historical perspective of what this meant specifically to the three disciples that would be present at the Transfiguration, and a timeless interpretation from St. Ambrose about the Kingdom of God and tasting life in Holy Communion. As I conclude this month s Q&A, I do want to make a plea for more questions. My inbox has dried up a bit lately which is why this section has not been in the past few editions. I am sure we have not exhausted all the questions you have about the faith, and odds are if you have a question about something, someone else in the parish has the exact same question.

6 Parish Council News December 2017 As we approach the winter season, let me provide you some warm news. The Orthodox Couples Club (OCC) followed up its very successful kickoff event with a series of smaller group meetings that took place on a Friday evening at a volunteer s home. In each case, the meeting took place around 7:30 PM following dinner time so only coffee and dessert was served. This is one of the most successful ministries at SS Peter & Paul as couples of all ages have the opportunity to meet more parishioners and get to know them better. The Greek Orthodox Athletic League (GOAL) basketball season started last month, and we have entered eight teams in the league all the way from first grade through high school as well as two men s teams. We are one of the few churches to have entered a team at each level. Hopefully you have noticed the total completion of the ADA ramp at the south end of the church. I say total completion as our Garden Club was responsible for the beautiful landscaping. On November 12, we held our fall Parish Assembly meeting with a number of important issues on the agenda. Normally we would have had a report on the Metropolis Clergy Laity Conference but without a metropolitan this meeting was cancelled. The 2018 annual budget was discussed and approved, and a presentation was made on the planned Men s Dinner which is scheduled for February 1, 2018 at the rooftop banquet room of the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Skokie. Also, at the meeting, parish council candidates were finalized so be sure you take part in the election process on Sunday, December 3, At the Parish Assembly meeting, I mentioned some trivia. People who know me well probably feel I do this too often. I said that Fr. Panagiotis is the youngest proistamenos in the history of SS. Peter & Paul, and I am probably the oldest parish council member to be elected president. I feel that we need to reduce this disparity and of the two choices, one is not an option. So I have decided not to run for the president s position next year. Another, but related, reason is that our parish consists of primarily three generations: 1) children, 2) parents and 3) grandparents; and, by far, the children and parents are the largest portion of the parish. Also, these two groups are the future of the parish. So it makes sense that the president be a member of the church future so his or her thinking matches that of the largest group of SS Peter & Paul parishioners. And the good news is that we currently have some excellent candidates from which to choose. So don t forget to vote on Sunday, December 3, And have a very Merry Christmas. Yours in Christ, George P. Nassos Parish Council President
