Parish Council News January, 2014 Happy New Year to all! I hope the Holiday season has been blessed and joyful for you and your families. Thank you to all who attended our fall general assembly on November 24th. There were several items of business addressed including the passing of the 2014 budget. Also, a motion was made by Pat Nassos, our Philoptochos president to reinstate the use of raffles by Philoptochos for the sole purpose of raising funds for philanthropy. After some discussion, the motion passed overwhelmingly. Best wishes to our Philiptochos for their continued good work in the community. Parish council elections took place on December 8th and I am happy to announce that John Nikitas has joined the council. John and his wife, Mary are long-time members of SS. Peter & Paul. John has worked as a member of the audit committee for the past several years and we look forward to his involvement as a member of the council. I would also like to thank Jeff Lanaghan, who is exiting the council, for his past service. At the beginning of December, you received your stewardship packet for For those who attended the general assembly, there was much discussion about our current financial condition. I urge all of you who haven't already done so, to prayerfully consider your pledge to the church for 2014 and submit your pledge card soon. I hope 2014 is a year filled with much happiness and spiritual joy. May God's blessings continue to be with you. Jim Santos Parish Council President

Message from the Stewardship Committee The Stewardship Committee wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and a Healthy We also need to thank all of our families who made contributions and fulfilled their pledges for Because we were short of meeting our projected target, the Parish Council made a plea for an additional contribution from all of the good families in our community. We wish to thank the many families who "stepped-up" and made an extra contribution for 2013 when the Church was in great need. Each year we all called upon to ask ourselves "How much should I pledge for my annual Stewardship to our Church"? Since our Parish decided many years ago to abandon the concept of "dues" and embrace the Orthodox teaching of Stewardship, we have been told that the answer to the question of how much to give rests within our own heart. We are taught that giving to the Church should be "sacrificial". Stewardship giving is an act of gratitude to the Lord for all the gifts we enjoy and this act of giving benefits our own Spiritual growth. This act of giving to the Church should not be viewed in terms of "How much does the Parish need to meet it's budget?.but in terms of "How much can I give after taking care of the needs of my family?" Stewardship is an act of giving back to Christ and HIS Church, sacrificial giving of our Time, Talent and Treasure. As Orthodox Christians we are all responsible for maintaining and strengthening Christ's Church for us and for those that follow. Orthodox Christian Stewardship begins when we say "I BELIEVE" and ACT on that belief. Our bond with the Lord begins with Faith, is maintained by the Holy Spirit, and is continually renewed in our actions. Sharing of our time, talent and treasure is an important way not only to support the needs of the parish family, it is an important way for us to grow as Orthodox Christians. It deepens our relationship with Christ and helps meet the commitment made at our Baptism and renewed every Sunday at Liturgy by partaking of HIS precious body and blood. The 2014 Stewardships packets were mailed to our homes last month. If you have not already done so, please take a moment to fill out the 2014 pledge card and send it to the office or drop it off at the Outreach Table that is set up for you every Sunday during coffee hour. Take some time and focus on what Saints Peter and Paul means to you, your children and grandchildren. After all, we believe that we are ONE CHURCH, CHRIST'S CHURCH. Our Church family is an integral part of the Body of Christ. Thank You for your support of our Church and our mission to grow our community. Happy and Healthy New Year. FYI- Did you know that the Church paid close to $29,000 in property insurance in 2013? Part of your Stewardship contribution goes to protect our building and our precious belongings.
January 6 Theophany About the beginning of our Lord's thirtieth year, John the Forerunner, who was some six months older than Our Saviour according to the flesh, and had lived in the wilderness since his childhood, received a command from God and came into the parts of the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance unto the remission of sins. Then our Saviour also came from Galilee to the Jordan, and sought and received baptism though He was the Master and John was but a servant. Whereupon, there came to pass those marvellous deeds, great and beyond nature: the Heavens were opened, the Spirit descended in the form of a dove upon Him that was being baptized and the voice was heard from the Heavens hearing witness that this was the beloved Son of God, now baptized as a man (Matt. 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:1-22). From these events the Divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ and the great mystery of the Trinity were demonstrated. It is also from this that the present feast is called "Theophany," that is, the divine manifestation, God's appearance among men. On this venerable day the sacred mystery of Christian baptism was inaugurated; henceforth also began the saving preaching of the Kingdom of the Heavens. Apolytikion in the First Tone Lord, when You were baptized in the Jordan, the veneration of the Trinity was revealed. For the voice of the Father gave witness to You, calling You Beloved, and the Spirit, in the guise of a dove, confirmed the certainty of His words. Glory to You, Christ our God, who appeared and enlightened the world. Kontakion in the Fourth Tone You appeared to the world today, and Your light, O Lord, has left its mark upon us. With fuller understanding we sing to You: "You came, You were made manifest, the unapproachable light." AGAPE PRESCHOOL WE WISH YOU A HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR FROM AGAPE PRESCHOOL! For questions regarding the Agape Preschool and its programs, please call Renée at

Youth Corner HOPE: The Hope Group is continuing its ever important ministry of fellowship and foundational introduction to life in the Orthodox Church, learning about the great feast of St Nicholas (Dec 6 th ), St Spyridon (Dec 12 th ) and the Nativity of Christ (Dec 25 th ). The Hope Group would like to take the start of the New Year as an opportunity to reach out and invite those who have had the blessing of new children in their family in the past year to join our group. If you or someone you know is interested in coming together for fellowship and fun with other parents and young children, please contact Fr. Panagiotis. Faith/Love/Joy: It was wonderful to gather together again with the elementary school children of SS. Peter & Paul. A special thank you from Fr. Panagiotis and Presbytera Nichole to the parents who volunteered to assist with our craft. The beaded candy canes that the children made were a big hit. After spending time showing off our artistic talents, the Children joined Fr. Panagiotis on the Solea and talked about the different people and animals in the Icon of the Nativity of Christ. We would like to invite all the elementary school children to the next Faith Love & Joy night on January 3 rd. Jr. G.O.Y. A. / Sr. G.O.Y.A.: December was the first month where we joined our Jr and Sr GOYAs together to meet on the same night. We thank everyone for accommodating the change, and hope that it will be a positive adjustment for the SSPP GOYA. The SSPP GOYA monthly meeting had a little bit of Christmas Flare to it as we shared Christmas Cookies and Hot Chocolate. Afterwards we took a listen to some of the verses of popular Christmas Carols that are normally omitted when we hear them on the radio, but that have great theological depth. The month of January will bring with it a great opportunity for outreach, as the GOYA will be helping pack meals for needy children through Feed My Starving Children on Wednesday Jan 22 nd. Please RSVP to Fr Panagiotis if you would like to be participate in this great ministry, or if you are a parent and would like to chaperone the event.

January 17 Anthony the Great Saint Anthony, the Father of monks, was born in Egypt in 251 of pious parents who departed this life while he was yet young. On hearing the words of the Gospel: "If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell what thou hast, and give to the poor" (Matt. 19:21), he immediately put it into action. Distributing to the poor all he had, and fleeing from all the turmoil of the world, he departed to the desert. The manifold temptations he endured continually for the span of twenty years are incredible. His ascetic struggles by day and by night, whereby he mortified the uprisings of the passions and attained to the height of dispassion, surpass the bounds of nature; and the report of his deeds of virtue drew such a multitude to follow him that the desert was transformed into a city, while he became, so to speak, the governor, lawgiver, and master-trainer of all the citizens of this newly-formed city. The cities of the world also enjoyed the fruit of his virtue. When the Christians were being persecuted and put to death under Maximinus in 312, he hastened to their aid and consolation. When the Church was troubled by the Arians, he went with zeal to Alexandria in 335 and struggled against them in behalf of Orthodoxy. During this time, by the grace of his words, he also turned many unbelievers to Christ. Saint Anthony began his ascetic life outside his village of Coma in Upper Egypt, studying the ways of the ascetics and holy men there, and perfecting himself in the virtues of each until he surpassed them all. Desiring to increase his labors, he departed into the desert, and finding an abandoned fortress in the mountain, he made his dwelling in it, training himself in extreme fasting, unceasing prayer, and fierce conflicts with the demons. Here he remained, as mentioned above, about twenty years. Saint Athanasius the Great, who knew him personally and wrote his life, says that he came forth from that fortress "initiated in the mysteries and filled with the Spirit of God." Afterwards, because of the press of the faithful, who deprived him of his solitude, he was enlightened by God to journey with certain Bedouins, until he came to a mountain in the desert near the Red Sea, where he passed the remaining part of his life. Saint Athanasius says of him that "his countenance had a great and wonderful grace. This gift also he had from the Saviour. For if he were present in a great company of monks, and any one who did not know him previously wished to see him, immediately coming forward he passed by the rest, and hurried to Anthony, as though attracted by his appearance. Yet neither in height nor breadth was he conspicuous above others, but in the serenity of his manner and the purity of his soul." So Passing his life, and becoming an example of virtue and a rule for monastics, he reposed on January 17 in the year 356, having lived altogether some 105 years. Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone O Father Anthony, you imitated the zealous Elijah. You followed the straight paths of the Baptist and became a desert dweller. By prayer you confirmed the universe. Wherefore, intercede with Christ our God to save our souls. Kontakion in the Second Tone Forsaking the uproars of life O venerable one, you completed your life in quiet, fully imitating the Baptist. Therefore, we honor you with him, O Anthony, Father of Fathers
