PASTORAL MESSAGE Without leaving Rome, thou didst come to us by the precious chains which thou didst wear. O foremost of the Apostles. And worshipping them with faith, we pray: By thine intercessions with God, grant us great mercy. January sees the festivities of the Church take no post-christmas hiatus. We proceed directly from Christ s birth to His baptism and then to the commemoration of a host of major saints in the Church: St. John the Baptist, St. Anthony the Great, SS Athanasios and Cyril of Alexandria, St. Gregory the Theologian, and the Three Hierarchs. But there is also a lesser known feast of the Church that falls on January 16 th which should hold great significance to us as a parish dedicated to the memory of the Chief of the Apostles Peter and Paul. It is the celebration of St. Peter s miraculous escape from prison and the veneration of the chains he wore while in captivity. Found in Chapter 12 of the Book of Acts, we read the account of Peter s imprisonment in Jerusalem. After seeing that the execution of the Apostle James pleased the enemies of the Church, Herod Agrippa had St. Peter arrested in order that St. Peter might share the same fate as St. James the Apostle. Yet, while in prison, an angle appeared to St. Peter by night. The angel miraculously released St. Peter from his chains and guided him to safety, mystically opening each of the prison doors as they approached. St. Peter found refuge in the house of the Evangelist Mark s mother, giving praise to God with all present on account of his deliverance from impending death. Even after we have the good news of Christ s descent into Hades and release of all those held captive by sin, God reiterates this message symbolically through St. Peter s imprisonment and release. Just like those who had died before the coming of our Lord, St. Peter found himself ensnared by an evil foe. Bound, with no hope of escape, God sends help and unfastens the shackles which held him. Still, He does not leave St. Peter to his own devices to navigate the path to safety of his own accord. The one sent by God walks together with St. Peter to the open gate of his salvation. This is the story of St. Peter. This is the story of Christ and His descent into Hades. This is the story of each of us as we seek the Lord s help in releasing us from struggle, sin, and hardship. We do not walk alone in these times. Instead, we are guided by the help of God, who descends to the very point of our captivity and steers us toward salvation. Join us the morning of January 16 th for the Divine Liturgy as we celebrate both St. Peter s and our own salvation from captivity. + Fr. Panagiotis

Q&A with Fr. Panagiotis Father, what is the significance of Vasilopita? I know it has something to do with the New Year and St. Basil. Why do we put a coin in the bread? - D.M. Vasilopita is a sweet bread or cake baked for the celebration of the feastday of St. Basil (Vasil -Basil; pita pie). A single coin is baked into each bread. Because St. Basil s feastday is January 1 st it has become associated with celebrations of the New Year. The practice is that each Church, and even each family within their home would ceremoniously cut and distribute the pieces of Vasilopita. The one who received the coin is said to have good luck in the coming year. There are two traditions about the origin of the coin within the bread and we will discuss those below: St. Basil and a Heavenly Tax Return One year, during a time of terrible famine, the emperor levied a sinfully excessive tax upon the people of Caesarea. The tax was such a heavy burden upon the already impoverished people that to avoid debtors' prison each family had to relinquish its few remaining coins and pieces of jewelry, including precious family heirlooms. Learning of this injustice upon his flock, St. Basil the Great, the archbishop of Caesarea, took up his bishop's staff and the book of the holy Gospels and came to his people's defense by fearlessly calling the emperor to repentance. By God's grace, the emperor did repent! He canceled the tax and instructed his tax collectors to turn over to St. Basil all of the chests containing the coins and jewelry which had been paid as taxes by the people of Caesarea. But now St. Basil was faced with the daunting and impossible task of returning these thousands of coins and pieces of jewelry to their rightful owners. After praying for a long time before the icons of our Master Christ and His All-Holy Mother, St. Basil had all the treasures baked into one huge pita. He then called all the townspeople to prayer at the cathedral, and, after Divine Liturgy, he blessed and cut the pita, giving a piece to each person. Miraculously, each owner received in his piece of Vasilopita his own valuables. They all joyfully returned home, giving thanks to God who had delivered them from abject poverty and to their good and holy bishop St. Basil the Great. ( St. Basil and His Love of the Poor When Saint Basil the Great, who was a bishop, wanted to distribute money to the poor in his Diocese. He wanted to preserve their dignity, so as not to look like charity, he commissioned some women to bake sweetened bread, in which he arranged to place gold coins. Thus the families in cutting the bread to nourish themselves, were pleasantly surprised to find the coins. ( Please any question you have for inclusion in an upcoming Q & A to Fr. Panagiotis at frp@ssppglenview.org

Parish Council News January 2017 We hope you had Merry Christmas, and Santa was good to you. Last month we held our annual parish council elections, and I want to welcome four new members to the council: Steve Callas, George Logothetis, Jimmy Samartzis and John Tranas. The new Parish Council will be inducted on January 8, and they will meet for a short meeting to elect the new officers. And I would like to take this opportunity to thank the support from our outgoing parish council members Fritz Freidinger, Jim Gottreich, Nick Mechales and Demete Papson. All four have been very hard workers for the church, but I want to especially thank Jim who has served as a council member for well over 30 years and Nick for 26 years, both while also serving on many committees and ministries real dedication. You may have noticed three new cameras in our sanctuary along with a communications booth in the northwest corner where the kouvouklion had been stored. Thanks to George Burbules, we are now streaming the liturgy service on the internet. This will allow home-bound parishioners and other people to observe the entire liturgy on their computer or mobile device every Sunday. There are only about 15 other Greek Orthodox parishes in the U.S. that offer this service, and we are one of only two that stream the liturgy with multiple cameras thus the need for a communications booth. This streaming service may also be available for sacraments, like baptisms and weddings, as well. On Sunday, January 8, the SS. Peter & Paul Philoptochos will be hosting the Metropolis Vasilopita beginning at 6 PM. This is a wonderful event consisting of a very short service followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. Please try to attend and enjoy, food and wine, fellowship and music by the Hellenic Five. For those who have been stewards of SS. Peter & Paul for many years, you may recall an annual event hosted by Andy Callas and his family for over 40 years up until about 15 years ago. This Men s Raffle Dinner was attended by 250 men for dinner, fellowship, fun and fund raising. The event brought in over $750,000 for our church. Andy was also responsible for initiating a similar event for several other Greek Orthodox churches in the Chicago area. We are planning to host one more Men s Raffle Dinner as a thank you to Andy Callas on Thursday, February 16, 2017 with all of the proceeds going to a charity. So be on the lookout for announcements for this event. Beginning this month, you should notice a change out of all the indoor and outdoor lights to LEDs. The only exception will be fluorescent tubes which require rewiring and are not cost effective. The $25,400 investment will save the church $14,700 in energy cost and about $3,000 in maintenance through less changing of the parking lot lights. Look for more environmental and energy improvements recommended by the environmental ministry. We wish you a very healthy and happy new year! Yours in Christ, George P. Nassos Parish Council President

10 and 2; Driving us to Further Destinations Our Stewardship Outlook for 2017 and Beyond A message from the Stewardship Committee At the most recent Parish General Assembly, many requests were made to make the stewardship numbers more visible to the Parish at large and also, requests were made for more frequent updates regarding Church expenditures. Our Parishioners freely and generously give of their time, talent and treasure but seek more frequent reminders of how and where the funds are applied. The Parish Counsel, more specifically the finance team, in turn, generates reports full of numbers on spreadsheets and tries to make that information readily available to everyone. However, a visual reminder of the importance of Stewardship is often necessary and, this month, we felt it was appropriate to post a photograph to remind us all of why Stewardship is so important. We constantly are told that statistically, more and more Christians are turning away from their faith for a myriad of reasons which, unfortunately, may be too numerous to list on one page. One that clearly stands out is that many Christians are becoming indifferent to their faith. Often it is said that the opposite of love is not hate but indifference; if we become indifferent to our Faith, our Faith will not survive. For this reason, we post this photo to remind us of the importance of maintaining a loving and vibrant spiritual environment for ourselves; but more importantly for the generations to come. Seeing all these children of various ages lining up leaving little room on the altar is a glaring reminder of why Stewardship matters. Our children will remember their own personal experiences with our Church and if we provide them with the proper guidance, they will someday sit in the pews watching their children become spiritually connected with the Church.

Stewardship Outlook for 2017 cont. In 2017, we will launch our 10 and 2 Stewardship campaign in earnest and will ask all Parishioners to increase their monetary contribution by 10% and contribute at a minimum, two hours of their time and talent per month. Imagine what would happen if all of us made these consistent yet growing contributions to our Faith; our Parish would not only survive, but thrive and expand! In 2016, a concerted effort was made to increase participation in the many ministries our Church has to offer; a Ministry Council was created to see how each ministry can complement the other focusing our message of love not only to our Parish, but to our community at large; a Ministry Calendar was created to enable each Parishioner to visualize all that is going on in our Church and to encourage participation; generally speaking, an effort to revive interest in the Church has increased and is ongoing and the push for participation will be more vibrant in Going forward in 2017, we urge all Parishioners become more involved in the many ministries our Church has to offer as an increase in fellowship is anticipated to lead to larger monetary contributions. We can all increase our participation to 2 hours per month or 24 hours per year (there are 8,736 hours in a year); we can all increase our Stewardship pledges 10% in Our efforts will not be in vain but rather, we will all be spiritually rewarded and will be able to maintain and grow our faith for the next generation. Our Stewardship goal for 2016 and for 2017 is $650, for each year. As of November 30, 2016, $474, was contributed; we are at just over 71% of our goal. The 10 and 2 campaign will ensure that we will always meet and exceed our goals going forward! In 2017, you will see more frequent reminders of the Stewardship receipts; financial reports regarding to how the funds are applied; and far more frequent reminders of the many ministries in our Church; and of course, more frequent invitations to participate in all that our Church as to offer. In the end, our most accurate assessment of our results will be pews packed with Parishioners, young and old, who have joined together as we all make our spiritual journey together! Sincerely, The Stewardship Committee P.S.: the Stewardship Committee is looking to expand in 2017; please join us!!

A Sustainable Environment: Our Obligation to Protect God s Gift by George P. Nassos We Should Stop Drinking Bottled Water In my October 2016 environmental article posted in the Messenger, I talked about the four critical environmental issues, one of which is water. Of all the fresh water available in the U.S., 60% is consumed by agriculture, 30% by industry and 10% by humans. This latter amount is only 0.001% of all the water on earth. So of all the water consumed by humans, let s take a look at one source, that of bottled water. Bottled water continues to be one of the fastest growing food products in the U.S. In 2015 the total volume of bottled water consumed in the United States was 11.7 billion gallons, a 7.6% increase from That translates into an average of 36.3 gallons per person. More than half of all Americans drink bottled water, and about one-third of them drink it on a regular basis. The sales of this product have more than tripled since 1991, primarily due to clever marketing and more people moving away from carbonated beverages. Early this year, bottled water will surpass carbonated beverages to become the number one beverage consumed by Americans. But, should you be drinking bottled water or tap water? Bottled water is a food product and thus is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Tap water, on the other hand, is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In general, the EPA standards for drinking water are more stringent that those of the FDA for bottled water. For example, city tap water can have no confirmed E. coli or fecal coliform bacteria. FDA bottled water rules include no such prohibition as a certain small amount of any type of coliform bacteria is allowed. In addition, water bottling plants must test for coliform bacteria just once a week while big -city tap water must be tested over 100 times per month. City tap water must meet standards for certain important toxic or cancer-causing chemicals such as phthalate (a chemical that can leach from plastic, including plastic bottles). The industry persuaded FDA to exempt bottled water from regulations regarding these chemicals, obviously because water is sold in plastic bottles. There are several other gaps in the regulations, favoring tap water, that have been identified in a study by the National Resources Defense Council ( On the other hand, it should also be pointed out that bottled water is missing an important chemical. Children that drink too much bottled water would be deprived of the fluorine, typically introduced to tap water but not in bottled water, which helps reduce tooth cavities. In California, there had been an increase in children s tooth decay attributed primarily to the increase in bottled water consumption. Now, what about the bottle itself? It takes two times the volume of the bottle in water just to produce the plastic bottle. It also takes one-third the volume in oil to convert the oil to plastic. So when you consume a 12 ounce bottle of water, just remember that you have really consumed 36 ounces of water, bascially since only 22% of the plastic bottles are recycled. That is truly a waste. For many of the people that prefer bottled water, the primary reason is because of taste. For those that live in smaller towns and rely on sources other than treated water from large lakes, they may have justification. However, people who live in or near large cities like Chicago, better taste is not really a valid reason. Several years ago, a blind taste test was conducted by the Environmental Law & Policy Center at a Chicago restaurant known for its wine tastings. The attendees tasted Evian, Acqua Panna, Dasani, Aquafina and Chicago tap water all from unmarked pitchers. To the dismay of more than 50 tasters in the survey, Chicago tap water came in first and beat out even the most expensive waters. Acqua Panna, which has its source in the mountains of Tuscany came in second, and Evian, bottled from a source in the French Alps, came in fourth. Tap water in New York is of similar quality as Chicago tap water. Another reason given for drinking bottled water is convenience. That is a very valid reason, but one must consider the cost of this convenience. The most recent cost of water was found at Costco for Nestle Pure Life Purified Water which cost about $6.28 for a case of 24 bottles of 16.9 ounces. This amounts to $1.97 per gallon or $1,970 per 1,000 gallons. The price of Chicago tap water was $3.82 per 1000 gallons in 2015, and that makes bottled water over 500 times more expensive. The best of all worlds is to fill a bottle with tap water; then you have the convenience, low cost, better taste and possibly more pure. Just make sure you don t leave the water in the plastic bottle for a long time. Once again, clever marketing by big industry has swayed the American public.
