3 PASTORAL MESSAGE It is safe to assume that all Orthodox Christians are familiar with St. Basil the Great, or at least are familiar with the name if not the character of the man. Also a memorable saint, but to a lesser extent, is St. Basil s brother St. Gregory of Nyssa. Lesser known still is St. Basil and St. Gregory s sister St. Macrina the younger, who is celebrated within the Church on July 19 th. While her brothers might outshine her in celebrity, it was truly St. Macrina who was the driving force within a family that would produce at least 8 saints. St. Macrina s influence on her family and as a result on the Christian world cannot be overappreciated. When her brother St Basil completed his education in Athens he was slated to begin a promising legal and rhetorical career in government. That is, until his sister convinced him to use his newly minted rhetorical talents to preach the Gospel in the Church as opposed to fine speeches in the public forum. We might have been deprived of the beauty and poetry of the prayers of St. Basil s Liturgy were it not for the influence of his sister. Following her father s death, it was St. Macrina who urged her mother to convert their family estate into a monastery and to join her in the ascetical life. Through this monastery they provided constant support for widows, who would have struggled to find a place within society at that time. The saint s impact lies not just in her ability to steer her family members toward spiritually beneficial life decisions, but most importantly as their teacher. While not able to receive the same classical education as her brother St. Basil, St. Macrina read the scriptures and found within those pages the true, divine knowledge. She shared this knowledge with her other brothers. In this role she excelled, to the point that St. Gregory of Nyssa, one of the most philosophically dense and complex fathers of the Church, lovingly chooses to refer to her as his teacher more so than sister. As we approach her feastday it is good to familiarize ourselves with this great saint. By looking to St. Macrina we see the effect one faithful member of a family can have on the whole lot. Perhaps you may be the only member of your family who attends Liturgy. Persevere, one faithful member can deepen the faith of all. Maybe you are young and wish to see your parents moved to Christ. Speak to your parents about Christ; it was St. Macrina who had the largest impact on her mother s faith. You may be concerned about the religious education of the youth in your family. Read the scriptures and share them, for by doing so St. Macrina was hailed by St. Gregory as his teacher. In all things understand, one faithful person can bring a multitude to Christ. +Fr. Panagiotis

4 Q&A with Fr. Panagiotis When, why, who started the practice of making the sign of the cross? Did Catholics change the way they made the sign of the cross, after the split? Making the sign of the cross is attested to in some of our earliest existing Christian sources. As early as the second century Tertullian writes, In all our travels and movements, in all our coming in and going out, in putting of our shoes, at the bath, at the table, in lighting our candles, in lying down, in sitting down, whatever work occupies us, we mark our foreheads with the sign of the cross (De cor. Mil., iii). Two centuries later, St. Cyril of Jerusalem also attests to Christians making the sign of the cross on their forehead. This appears to be the earliest practice, and most likely at this time only the thumb was used to trace the sign of the cross. It is commonly thought that the transition from one thumb to three fingers came about in the 400 s to combat the Monophysite heresy (the belief that Christ had only one nature). The theology of the Trinity, and Christ s two natures (human and divine) had been firmly articulated by this point. Both major dogmas of our faith could be illustrated with the three-finger sign of the cross thumb, index, and ring fingers together to represent the Trinity; with ring and pinky fingers resting against the palm to represent Christ s dual natures. The expansion from one finger to three, coupled with the practice of blessing objects with the sign of the cross, also expanded the range of motion used to include forehead, stomach, and shoulders (first right then left). As the Catholic priest Fr. William Saunders, dean of Notre Dame Graduate School of Christendom College, notes, This practice was universal for the whole Church until about the twelfth century. This point is also confirmed in the Catholic Encyclopedia article concerning the sign of the cross. In the early thirteenth century, Pope Innocent III shows that in the West, things were beginning to shift, with three fingers remaining the norm, but some tracing this sign of the cross on their shoulders from right to left, and others from left to right. Pope Innocent writes, The sign of the cross is made with three fingers, because the signing is done together with the invocation of the Trinity this is how it is done: from above to below, and from the right to the left.others, however, make the sign of the cross from the left to the right, because from misery (left) we must cross over to glory (right), just as Christ crossed over from death to life, and from Hades to Paradise. Some priests do it this way so that they and the people will be signing themselves in the same way. You can easily verify this- picture the priest facing the people for the blessing- when we make the sign of the cross over the people, it is from left to right. Personally, I find the latter point more convincing to explain why Western Christianity switched to left then right after the thirteenth century. Watching the priest blessing the congregation, the faithful see his hand moving from his left to his right and people adopt those same mechanics for their own use. Anyone who has tried to teach a young child how to make the sign of the cross face to face has seen this same scenario in action. What is interesting about this is that the priest s hand moves from his left to his right because, since he is facing the people, he is blessing first their right and then left. So in his blessing, the priest retains the original priority of right before left. Please any questions you might have for a future Q&A to Fr. Panagiotis at frp@ssppglenview.org
