3 PASTORAL MESSAGE Let us set out with joy upon the season of the Fast, and prepare ourselves for spiritual combat. Let us purify our souls and cleanse our flesh; and as we fast from food, let us abstain also from every passion. Rejoicing in the virtues of the Spirit may we persevere with love, and so be counted worthy to see the solemn Passion of Christ our God, and with great spiritual gladness to behold His holy Pascha. (Hymn of Forgiveness Vespers) It was striking to read the words of the above hymn, which are sung on the very first evening of Lent. Never before had I thought of Lent as a joyous time. Lent is supposed to be difficult right? A time of decreased entertainment, blander foods, and more long Church services. At least that s how we popularly think about Lent. Well those things are true, but, at least as the Church is trying to tell us through the above hymn, those things are to be done with joy in our hearts. How, and maybe more importantly, why? The last line of the hymn gives us all the reason in the world to remain joyous in the midst of our Lenten observance, to be counted worthy to see the solemn Passion of Christ our God, and with great spiritual gladness to behold His holy Pascha. Those things that we do during Lent are by all means difficult, but their purpose is to prepare us to behold Christ s resurrection. Does that mean that we will not be hungry during Lent? Does it mean that we will not be bored during Lent? Does it mean that we will not grow tired? No. It simply means that you are suffering these things for a greater purpose. We endure small hardships willingly during Lent because Christ endured the greatest hardship of crucifixion willingly for our salvation. We remove certain foods from our diet during Lent to remind us that Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4). We repent and go to confession during Lent because God does not desire the death of a sinner, but rather that he should turn back and live (Ezekiel 33:11). Seen in this context, we rejoice not in the different ways that we observe Lent, but rather in their greater purpose. It is a joy to remember that in addition to food, it is God who sustains our lives. It is a joy to remember that God is calling me to seek forgiveness, which He grants. We must remember that joy and discomfort are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Just ask any athlete, purposeful discomfort is how they grow and develop their skills and abilities. In the same way a Christian is an athlete for Christ (1 Corinthians 9:24-27). Instead of sprints and lifting weights, we fast and pray. In both situations the tasks might be difficult. Yet, no successful athlete ever complained that they trained to much, likewise no Christian who is counted worthy to behold the holy resurrection of Christ will look upon the ascetic practices of Lent as burdens. I pray that God strengthen all of us as we begin the difficult and joyous task of preparing for His holy Pascha. + Fr. Panagiotis

4 Q&A with Fr. Panagiotis My children asked me what Meatfare and Cheesefare mean. I have been Orthodox all my life but I didn t know how to answer them. What is Meatfare and Cheesefare? (This question was submitted during Lent of 2017 but is being included here since Meatfare and Cheesefare are both this month) It is just great how our children s questions can stump us and force us to learn more about our own faith. These two terms are related to the pre-lenten period of the Church. While Lent is about preparing ourselves spiritually and physically for the celebration of Christ s resurrection, there is also a pre-lenten period that is to help us prepare for the period of preparation. It seems redundant, but the idea is that you are entering into the full Lenten observance in a gradual progression. That way, when Lent arrives in its full form you are ready to jump right in. The pre-lenten preparations just put our toe in the waters of fasting. The pre-lenten period introduces us to the fast. In 2018 it will look something like this: Sunday January 28 th Saturday February 3 rd Fast Free Week Sunday February 4 th Saturday February 10 th Regular Fasting Week Sunday February 11 th Meatfare Monday February 12 th Begin Meat Fast through the end of Lent Sunday February 18 th Cheesefare Monday February 19 th Clean Monday (Lent Begins, Begin Dairy Fast through the end of Lent) So if we look at the schedule above, we see that Meatfare Sunday is the last day when it is permissible to eat meat until Pascha, and Cheesefare Sunday is the last day when it is permissible to eat dairy until Pascha. Typically people would take whatever meat, or whatever dairy they had in their house and make sure to eat it all on those particular days so that there was none in the house during the Lenten period. If you have ever eaten a Hot Cross Bun that comes from the same tradition of trying to use all the dairy and eggs before Lent stated. I think we see the Church s pastoral wisdom in the way that the pre-lenten period is structured. It is hard to just jump right in to such an extremely new way of eating. Instead the Church allows us a week to eat whatever we want before reintroducing the normal, routine fast for a week. Then she asks us to remove one food group, meat, for a week. She lets us settle into that adjustment and then asks us to remove dairy, thus starting the full Lenten observance. Please any question you have for inclusion in an upcoming Q&A to Fr. Panagiotis at
