3 PASTORAL MESSAGE September 1 st marks the beginning of the Ecclesiastical New Year, but why September 1 st and not January 1 st like our civil calendars? The answer to this question can be traced back to Roman and then Byzantine Imperial practices. Every fifteen years the government would assess the economic status of the empire and levy taxes accordingly for the next fifteen years. This process occurred in September because at that time the harvest was completed in August (hence the Orthodox Church s practice of blessing the First Fruits of the harvest on The Feast of the Transfiguration, August 6 th ). Therefore, September was a time to reflect on the past year and project for the coming year. As a result of the close relationship that the Church and State enjoyed in the Byzantine Empire, the Church also adopted September 1 st as the beginning of Her new year as well. Since September was a time for reflection and projection in an economic sense, the Church took these principles and applied them to the Spiritual Life. The same questions that the government might ask about the health and strength of the economy can be asked in regard to the health and strength of the Church and Her members. What did I do this past year that yielded spiritual fruit? What seeds were planted, and what was the condition of the soil? Which areas of my life produced the best fruit, and where needs more tending? What are my goals for the future and what is the best way to accomplish those goals? The Ecclesiastical New year reminds us that periodically we need to take stock of our lives. As we proceed through September take the time to ask yourself some of these questions. Do not defraud yourself or the Church, but answer honestly. Continue to feed those areas of your life that flourish and bring forth good fruit (Matthew 7.17) and identify those areas which need extra attention. + Fr Panagiotis

4 Parish Council News September, 2014 On August 1st, we received correspondence from His Eminence, Metropolitan Iakovos of the Metropolis of Chicago that Fr. Panagiotis Boznos has been permanently assigned to SS Peter & Paul as our Proistamenos. In the time he has been with us, Father has served with grace and humility and has demonstrated the ability to lead and pastor our community. As His Eminence, Metropolitan Iakovos wrote in the assignment letter, "he has demonstrated great sensitivity and patience during this time of transition maintaining his dignity under pressing circumstances." Both the Metropolis of Chicago and your parish council, who worked collaboratively in this process, look forward to Father's ministry and pledge him our full and complete support. Axios! Christy Gouletas and her festival committee have been working very hard in preparation for our Greek Fest taking place on Saturday and Sunday, September 6th and 7th. If you would like to help out, there is still time to volunteer your services. Please contact Christy at Either way, please plan on attending and bringing your friends to share in our food, culture, and tradition. We are also planning a parish golf outing for Monday September 29th, location to be determined. Chris Atsaves, who organized the event last year has volunteered to chair it once again. If you would like to help out, you can reach Chris at Please look for further details as they become available. I hope you enjoyed the summer with plenty of relaxation and family time. With the beginning of the school year I remind you if you haven't already done so, please register your children in our Church School. You can do this very efficiently from our website, May God's blessings continue to be with you and your families. Jim Santos, President, Parish Council

6 The Nativity of the Theotokos, September 8th According to the ancient tradition of the Church, the Theotokos was born of barren and aged parents, Joachim and Anna, about the year 16 or 17 before the birth of Christ. Joachim was descended from the royal line of David, of the tribe of Judah. Anna was of the priestly tribe of Levi, a daughter of the priest Matthan and Mary, his wife. Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone Your birth, O Theotokos, brought joy to the whole world, for from you dawned the sun of righteousness, Christ our God. Freeing us from the curse, He gave us His blessings. Abolishing death, He granted us eternal life. The Elevation of the Holy Cross, September 14th Saint Helen, the mother of Saint Constantine the Great, when she was already advanced in years, undertook, in her great piety, the hardships of a journey to Jerusalem in search of the cross, about the year 325. A temple to Aphrodite had been raised up by the Emperor Hadrian upon Golgotha, to defile and cover with oblivion the place where the saving Passion had been suffered. The venerable Helen had the statue of Aphrodite destroyed, and the earth removed, revealing the Tomb of our Lord, and three crosses. Of these, it was believed that one must be that of our Lord, the other two of the thieves crucified with Him; but Saint Helen was at a loss which one might be the Wood of our salvation. At the inspiration of Saint Macarius, Archbishop of Jerusalem, a lady of Jerusalem, who was already at the point of death from a certain disease, was brought to touch the crosses, and as soon as she came near to the Cross of our Lord, she was made perfectly whole. Consequently, the precious Cross was lifted on high by Archbishop Macarius of Jerusalem; as he stood on the ambo, and when the people beheld it, they cried out, "Lord have mercy." It should be noted that after its discovery, a portion of the venerable Cross was taken to Constantinople as a blessing. The rest was left in Jerusalem in the magnificent church built by Saint Helen, until the year 614. At that time, the Persians plundered Palestine and took the Cross to their own country (see Jan. 22, Saint Anastasius the Persian). Late, in the year 628, Emperor Heraclius set out on a military campaign, retrieved the Cross, and after bringing it to Constantinople, himself escorted it back to Jerusalem, where he restored it to its place. Apolytikion in the First Tone Lord, save Your people and bless Your inheritance, granting our rulers to prevail over adversaries, and protecting Your commonwealth by Your Cross.

11 PROJECT MEXICO Although our team was small, we were blessed with a wonderful experience to Project Mexico. Thanks y to our Parish of Saints Peter and Paul a group of three (there is a significance in the number three!) were able to travel to Tijuana, Mexico and be a part of Project Mexico's Orthodox Basic Training. From July 15-21st, our strong team meet up with over 200 Orthodox faithful to build a home and more importantly grow closer to Christ. Our day began with prayer, followed by a different Orthodox speaker, preparing for our day, building, freshening up, dinner, evening prayers, and another presentation by Bishops, Monks, Priests, and Deacons. Our week was spiritually fulfilling for we lived the life Christ asks us to live, that is a life in prayer and helping those in need. Thank you to all of our generous donors for allowing us to go and we raised extra money that will cover the cost of one of the boy's tuition this fall. We pray that next year a larger group will be able to be a part of such a special experience! Christy Gouletas Katerina Karfias Andrew Douvlis
