PASTORAL MESSAGE Dear Parishioners: HERE I AM LORD are the words spoken by all those entering into the Holy Orders of the Priesthood and also the words spoken by Godly and Faithful Laity who serve the Church Universal. What a Prayer...what a Promise what a statement of Faith! This summer month of July affords many at least a few moments of peace, rest and refreshment. Have you spoken to the Lord these past few days? Have you offered some of your time and talent to His Church? Have you at least offered a prayer each and every day? Have you come to the Church to worship and receive His Sacraments? Come to the Church and lift your worldly burdens! Oh yes...be mindful of my Pastoral words...here I AM LORD! Be honest to yourself and commit TODAY! Our Parish reflects the Orthodox Christian Faith by her welcome, fellowship, and Godly goodwill not only to visitors, but to one another as Church members. The Clergy offer the Sacraments, the Blessings of His Church and the Leadership of Faith. The Laity respond to Christ by their faithful Stewardship and of offering oneself to uplift and serve God s Church. REMEMBER BUILD UP THE BODY OF CHRIST! It is a Spiritual Privilege. In His Service, Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in Unity! (Psalm 133) Rev. Fr. James Dokos PROTOPRESBYTER FJD/jem

ASK Father Jim QUESTION: I understand from your Sermons there are several Official Church names for the Virgin Mary. Can you share that information with us all? (Tony) ANSWER: THEOTOKOS.Mother of God PANAGIA.All Holy AIPARTHENOS Ever Virgin DESPINA.Our Lady Truly, a most Blessed and Revered Mother of us all! QUESTION: What is the best way to know God? (Adam) ANSWER: The best way to know God is to LOVE GOD. It is to respect and to live in His Creation, to follow His Commandments and to be a true follower of His Teachings. Love is not just a feeling of pleasure and air of delight. Love is truth, commitment and dedication of one s total-self. Love is sacrifice for others. Know God by your love, your Stewardship and your example to others. Go and preach His Message. Mark 12, Verse 30: And you shall love the Lord your God will all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and will all your strength. This is the First Commandment. QUESTION: Why? With all our advanced scientific and medical technology should we not be void of so much illness and diseases? (T.L.) ANSWER: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me. (Matthew 11:28,29) In today s society we are heavy laden and it seems all we hear is bad news, illness and tragic events. The world is indeed noisy and confusing; but we need to take the words of the Gospel of St. Matthew seriously EVERYDAY! We need to realize that our bodies are human and susceptible to disease and sickness. In these days we work, travel and worry at a furious pace. There is no time for much relaxation and pleasure. Busy means success and worldly survival. We need to learn, interact and network with the right people and circumstances. To add to the fury we obligate ourselves to such a degree that we forsake our own physical and spiritual health to educate ourselves with many degrees and know nothing about our Lord, His Church and His Teachings. Just ask around and see how many of us can recite even the Ten Commandments. You ll be surprised! Illness (human or spiritual) is a result of earthly life. We see that we are human, temporary, fragile and that happenings do take place good and bad. When we see sickness we then realize health! When we experience loneliness we rejoice in sharing friendships. When we see individuals void of Christ we then can see Him in our midst. Take time, take care and take the opportunity to appreciate what God has given unto us. Oh! One more thought: A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the bones. (Proverbs 17:22)

Parish Council News Please have a great 4 th of July and don t forget the birth of our country and all the armed force folks that have kept us a great nation. Fly your flag with pride. By the time you read this you will have experienced the new sound system that was installed in late May. We had several bids and finally selected the best, most cost effective, system for the future. Our thanks to Demete Papson for overseeing the project and making it happen. The Council also approved three book stands for the front row of the Choir. Terese Speropoulos, in line with our policy, got several quotes and selected nice, unobtrusive ones that will grace the first row as well as allowing the Choir to have a place to rest their books. The Agape Pre-school graduation in May was a treat and the commerative album was outstanding. Nicely done Renee Tzakis. The Junior Olympics took place at the end of May and our Church outdid itself again winning many medals. You ll get the details elsewhere. Congratulations to all the fine athletes. Congratulations to the two Philoptochos scholarship winners: Konstantine Kosmidis and George Trabaris. And, finally, don t forget the less fortunate and struggling: busboys, the homeless and the Salvation Army. Check the Church website ssppglenview.org and get involved in one or more of our great Ministries. Also, check the weekly handouts and this monthly bulletin to find out what events you should attend. Faithfully, Jim Gottreich Parish Council President jimgot@comcast.net OFFER your 2013 STEWARDSHIP to support our Parish Ministries and Community Life. TIME...TALENT...TREASURE!

Summertime Stewardship We are at the mid-point of Stewardship has seen its annual "high" in January- February.. and its usual summer doldrums. A reflection, perhaps, of vacations, "stay- cations".. golf dates.. no Church School.. lower Sunday Liturgy attendance (out-of-sight out-of mind?). Historically, we can expect the 2013 Stewardship campaign to resume in the Fall when the 2014 Campaign will begin and we will see an increase in Stewardship giving with Church School enrolment in September, the kick-off of the Stewardship campaign in October and the usual December surge from those who either wait until the end of the year to give, or start early on their next-year s pledge. So why an article about Stewardship in the Summer? Perhaps because we often cannot give Stewardship the reflection it deserves during the end-of-the-year, holiday, first-of-the-year rush. Those times of the year may be too hectic for many of us to think about changing what has become our "habit" when it comes to Stewardship. While a slowly increasing percentage of us are embracing the concept of proportional giving in their Stewardship, a still-too-large percentage of us give pretty much what we have been used to giving year-after-year.. in some cases just about what "dues" were in the 1970's. As the pace of life slows down in the Summer.. this might actually be the best time to think about Stewardship.. at the beach.. by the pool.. on the patio.. perhaps even at the 19 th hole. The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day seems like the perfect time to contemplate and reflect on what Stewardship means for Orthodox Christians. Stewardship comes from the Greek word "oikonomia", or economy, which means management of the house or household. In the New Testament, it means man's management of his whole life in response to God's love. As stewards, we are managers of the "time", "talents" and "treasures" that God has given to us. God as Creator gives us time by granting us life, our very existence. God as Giver of all gifts, grants us our abilities and talents. God as Maintainer, provides for our needs by affording us opportunities to earn a living. If we believe that God is the Giver, the Owner and we are the managers, then it follows that as Stewards we trust the Bible's directions on how to manage God's gifts. God expects us to give Him thanks by managing our gifts of "time", "talent" and "treasure" according to His will. In 2 Corinthians 8:3-5 St. Paul writes: "they gave according to their means as I can testify and beyond their means, of their own free will...but first they gave of themselves to the Lord and to us by the will of God." The essence of Stewardship is that we first give ourselves to God and then seek to do His will as his servants. Unless our hearts are in Christ, then we will find it difficult to do His will. We can only become His servants, by accepting His lordship over our lives.

Stewardship Cont. We can give our "time" to the Lord by our daily devotion, reading his Word, by at-tending Church services and by assisting others in need. We can use our "talents' in response to God's love by serving God as Sunday School teachers, Choir members, Parish Council members, Philoptochos members, serving in the Altar, participating in retreats, Summer Youth camps, Project Mexico, young adult and adult mission trips by cooking, cleaning and responding to the call of service to others. We use our "treasures", our income, God's gift to us to glorify his name. A percentage of our income, according to the Bible, is to be used for the work of God on earth. By sharing our "treasures" with the Lord, we become co-workers with Him in His work of salvation. Stewardship, as the management of God's gifts to us, is the method by which Christians should support their Church. We are to return a portion of what God has given to us back again to God. For many years parishes relied on dues, a - fixed "fee" required for "membership". This was not Stewardship.. rather it was a system that not only limited our giving but removed both the "free will" and the proportionality of giving "according to our means". Our Parish adopted Stewardship more than thirty years ago. Proportional giving is more equitable, for each person gives according to his or her means. Those who receive more may give more and those who receive less may give less and still be active Stewards of the Church. The decision of "how much" to give rests with the individual's conscience and love for God. Stewardship has been the Biblical and Christian method of Church support through the centuries. Stewardship is putting our faith into action. Stewardship is bringing Christ into our entire life, including our finances. Stewardship provides us with the opportunity to contribute on a weekly basis, thus making it easier to increase our capability of giving. Our love for Christ and His Church finds its expression in our free will, proportionate giving to our parish. Stewardship is a matter of our personal faith in God and He keeps his promises. As St. Paul writes: "He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work" (2 Corinthians 9:6-8). Your Stewardship Committee wishes you a restful and contemplative summer. We pray that your summer reading includes this discussion of Stewardship. We look forward to the successful conclusion of Stewardship 2013 and a spirit-filled segue into the Fall kick-off of Stewardship 2014.

St. Paraskeve - July 26 Saint Paraskeve, who was from a certain village near Rome, was born to pious parents, Agatho and Politia. Since she was born on a Friday (in Greek, Paraskeve), she was given this name, which means "preparation" or "preparedness" (compare Matt. 27:62, Mark 15:42, Luke 23:54, and John 19:31, where 'Friday' is called "the day of the preparation"). From childhood she was instructed in the sacred letters and devoted herself to the study of the divine Scriptures, while leading a monastic life and guiding many to the Faith of Christ. During the reign of the Emperor Antoninus Pius, she was apprehended because she was a Christian and was urged to worship the idols, but she answered with the words of Jeremias: "Let the gods that have not made heaven and the earth perish from off the earth" (Jer. 10:11). Because of this she endured exceedingly painful torments, and was beheaded in the year 140. The faithful pray to her for the healing of eye ailments. Apolytikion in the First Tone Appropriate to your calling, O Champion Paraskevi, you worshipped with the readiness your name bears. For an abode you obtained faith, which is your namesake. Wherefore, you pour forth healing and intercede for our souls. Kontakion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone O most majestic One, we have discovered your temple to be a spiritual clinic wherein all the faithful resoundingly honor you, O famed and venerable martyr Paraskevi.

Metropolis of Chicago 2013 Junior Olympics On Memorial Day weekend the 32 nd annual Junior Olympics were hosted by Saints Constantine and Helen of Palos Hills. A total of 75 athletes and coaches of Saints Peter and Paul participated in these games. The highlights of the weekend were many. Our Athletes received 37 medals this year. It is the highest total in the last 10 years, since I have been coordinating the program for the Parish. The year old soccer team won bronze metals, the boys volleyball team won a bronze medal and the co-ed softball team won silver medal. It was a tremendous weekend for all who participated. We also had athletes compete in swimming, wrestling, track and field, table tennis, regular tennis and basketball.
