3 SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, On this Second Sunday of Easter, we are called to love with the heart of God. Pope Francis in a homily remarked that Jesus invitation to mercy is intended to draw us into a deeper imitation of God our Father: Be merciful, as your Father is merciful. This basic insight into mercy has been contemplated for centuries. Mercy, wrote St. Ambrose in the fourth century, is a good thing, for it makes men perfect, in that it imitates the perfect Father. Nothing graces the Christian soul so much as mercy. The words mercy and merciful appear around 150 times in Scripture. Hesed, or tender mercy, is God s greatest characteristic in the Old Testament. For example, Moses was told that the Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness (Ex 34:6). King David, who knew something about sin and justice, wrote, Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy steadfast love; according to thy abundant mercy blot out my transgressions (Ps 51:3). This mercy is boundless and undeserved compassion; in the New Testament it is called agape, which translates to pure love. To be merciful is to love with the heart of God, which is why Jesus, in the Beatitudes, stated, Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy (Mt 5:7). To be blessed is to share in the very life of God, and God is perfect love and unfathomable mercy. St. Peter, in today s Epistle, also connects the two, writing, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope... Mercy, of course, does not ignore sin; on the contrary, mercy addresses and overcomes sin. The Son, by becoming man and being willing to die for the sins of the world, exhibited mercy in a most remarkable manner. Our new birth to a real and living hope, remarked Peter, is through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you... We show mercy to others, not by ignoring or downplaying their sins, but by loving them and helping them to embrace God s gift of forgiveness. St. Pope John Paul II officially established this Second Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday, recognizing the private revelations given by Jesus to St. Faustina Kowalska ( ). The Polish nun saw two rays of light shining from the heart of Christ, which, he explained to her, these rays represent blood and water. John Paul II reflected upon her visions, writing: Blood and water! We immediately think of the testimony given by the Evangelist John, who, when a solider on Calvary pierced Christ s side with his spear, sees blood and water flowing from it. Moreover, if the blood recalls the sacrifice of the cross and the gift of the Eucharist, the water, in Johannine symbolism, represents not only baptism but also the gift of the Holy Spirit. St. Pope John Paul II emphasized that the divine mercy is radically demonstrated in God s sacrificial self-gift, flowing from the heart of the Father, who is rich in mercy. In his 1980 encyclical Dives in Misericordia ( On the Mercy of God ), St. John Paul II wrote that Jesus Christ not only spoke of mercy, but above all, he himself makes it incarnate and personifies it. He himself in a certain sense is mercy. And we my dear brothers and sisters in Christ, in turn, are to be witnesses to that mercy, in word and deed. Remember to pray hard, pray well, pray often, save souls and don t lose yours in the process. Amen Wishing All Y all a God Glorious Week. Fr. Richard Fineo

9 SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER From the Pastor s Desk Happy continued Easter! Today is the Second Sunday of Easter, also known as Divine Mercy Sunday! Jesus Christ, the son of God, has risen from the dead! In doing so, he has won for us forgiveness and everlasting life! This Divine Mercy is open to all of us who believe that Jesus has died and risen for us! Alleluia! In today s Gospel of John, Jesus has been crucified and then buried in a tomb. Most of his Apostles, fearing for their lives, are hiding away in a locked upstairs room. For reasons unknown, Thomas is not with them at this time. Miraculously, Jesus appears before them and shows that he has truly risen from the dead. Then, after talking with them and blessing them, Jesus vanishes from their presence. Later, when the Apostles, rejoicing, relate to Thomas that the Lord has risen, he does not believe them. Thus, down through the ages, we have come to name him Doubting Thomas. Perhaps we look down on him as the Apostle who didn t believe that Jesus had risen from the dead. I think we are a little unfair here, though. First, remember that the others believed because they had actually seen Jesus, and Thomas had not. Second, Jesus was known dead, executed by Roman soldiers, and they were the experts. When Roman soldiers killed you, you were decidedly dead. There was no question. To look at it more personally, if your friends told you they saw Abraham Lincoln alive and well and walking around, you would likely assume it was just someone dressed up as Lincoln, not the man himself. You might even promise your friends that if you ever saw him you would pull off his fake beard to prove it. Thomas responds in a similar way. He says he would not believe it was Jesus until he could put his fingers and hand into the holes torn in through the crucifixion. In other words, he could not be fooled by a fake! The next time Jesus appears to the Apostles, Thomas is present. Jesus invites Thomas to put his fingers into the holes in his hands and to put his hand into his side, and to believe. We have no indication that Thomas actually did those things, and it is unlikely that he did. What we do know is that Thomas no longer doubted but believed. He uttered a brief but vastly profound declaration of faith, My Lord and my God. We must never look down on St. Thomas. He was God s gift to us. Thomas doubted and then believed. He now knew that Jesus, undeniably dead, was now unquestionably returned to life, and this is testimony that we can trust because it was hard won. Blessed are we who have not seen but yet believe. However, we have both faith and reason today, thanks to the testimony of Doubtless Thomas: My Lord and my God! Today especially, on Divine Mercy Sunday, God showers us with blessings. Let us open ourselves to the special graces of Divine Mercy offered to us today! Blessings and Peace! Fr. Kevin Thompson, Pastor Joyous in the Lord
10 Dear Parishioners, During the Lenten Season we are asked to pray, fast and give alms. Lent is the perfect time for us to pray for those in need whether it is for their material, emotional or spiritual needs. And when you practice fasting and abstinence during these forty days, please remember those of our neighbors who are hungry, and consider sharing your gifts with them. One way to do this is by making a gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, which supports programs that help to feed people in our community each year through Catholic Charities and our Parishes. God has blessed each of us with so many gifts-our families, friends, talents, abilities, in fact our very lives are gifts from God. As good stewards we recognize that all blessings come from the Lord and that these blessings are to be used to serve all God s children. Hopefully, many more families will be able to make a contribution to this years Catholic Ministries Appeal so we will be able to reach our goal of $52,300. This effort is much more than a yearly fundraiser that supports the ministries and programs of our Church. It is an expression of our love for one another. Thanks to your generosity, we received $54,047 in pledges to the 2017 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Your donations help meet the needs of people in the Diocese of Rockville Centre and in our own parish. This money helps the poor and the elderly, supports health services, education and counseling programs for people of all ages. It provides for religious education for priests and seminarians, for meals-on-wheels, for chaplain services in hospitals, college campuses and county jails, along with many more ministries intended to help those less fortunate on Long Island. Finally our parish receives a cash rebate which last year amounted to more than $12,000. This money helps offset expenses needed to run our parish and the many programs we offer. Let s support our bishop, The Most Reverend John Barres and Fr. Richard in his first CMA campaign, by making a pledge to this years Catholic Ministries Appeal. The programs and services supported by the Appeal have a significant impact on hundreds of thousands of parishioners throughout our Diocese. You have until January 31st, 2019 to pay off your pledge. No down payment is necessary. The Diocese will send monthly reminders. Keep in mind this is not a legal document. If you feel you cannot keep up your payments, simply discontinue them. Whatever you are able to give, large or small, will be accepted gratefully. To help you decide here are some suggested gift plans: **$200 pledge $20 per month ** $100 pledge $10 per month **$50 pledge $5.00 per month To make a pledge, simply fill out the form below and place it in the collection basket in the coming weeks or mail it back to the parish office. Thank you for your support and continued generosity. John Romaine, Catholic Ministries Appeal Chairman
