PARISH MISSION STATEMENT We of St. Bernadette Parish, are a Eucharistic Community, created by the Father, nourished by the Lord and led by the Holy Spirit. We are to be the eyes, ears, hands and heart of Christ, living by His example, sharing the Good News in Word and deed. SACRAMENT OF PENANCE: Saturday: After the 8:30 AM Mass. Monday: 6:00 6:45 PM. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM: Baptisms are celebrated every second and fourth Sunday of the month at 1:15 PM. Pre-Baptismal Seminar The third Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM. 2 1ST SUNDAY OF ADVENT The Jesse Tree is named from Isaiah 11:1: "A shoot will spring forth from the stump of Jesse. It is the Story of God in the Old Testament, and to connect the Advent Season with the faithfulness of God across 4,000 years of history. The Jesse Tree is often symbolized by a bare tree with no leaves and as the History of the Old Testament, which we call Salvation History, unfolds with the ornaments symbolizing the history, it is replaced by the Christmas Tree full of living leaves (needles) and beautifully green and decorated. The Christmas tree is a symbol of God s Love, always green, evergreen trees never die, and since Jesus is the image of God the Father, the Christmas tree is the symbol of Jesus. The advent wreath is decorated with evergreen, to show the never ending love of God through the 4000 years that we had turned from Him. The Jesse tree symbols will be hung weekly from the wreath. Each symbol should be hung, one per day, but since we as a community come together once a week, the entire week will appear on Sunday for us to see Salvation History unfold. Each week this year, this part of the bulletin will explain the 7 symbols each week. Sunday begins with the Tree. Introduction of the Jesse Tree. 1 Sam 16:1-13 gives the foundation of the Davidic Kingdom which leads to the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Isaiah 11:1-10 prophesizes that the shoot will sprout from it. Monday recalls creation with the symbol of the World. Gen 1:1-2:3 Tuesday recalls the first sin with the Tree and the Forbidden fruit with the symbol of an apple. Gen 2:4-3:24 Wednesday recalls the flood cleansing the earth of sin and saving the faithful Noah and his family to rebuild, along with God s promises, in the rainbow that the entire earth will never be destroyed by flood again. Depending on one s choice, the symbol is the rainbow and ark. Gen 6:11-22, 7:17-8:12, 20-9:17 Thursday shows us the foundations of the revealing of the Faith through Abraham, as Abraham becomes the Father of Faith and is promised numberless descendants, symbolized by the sword in scarifying Isaac. Gen 12:1-7, 15:1-6 Friday is the foreshadowing of how Abraham, the Father of Faith, is asked to offer his son, an image of the Father God offering His Son Jesus for us. Symbolized by the ram to take Isaac s place. Gen 22:1-19 Saturday brings to life the forming of the 12 tribes of Israel in Jacob s 12 sons, the forming of the Jewish people. This is symbolized by the ladder of the vision of Jacob seeing the angels ascending and descending from heaven, protecting us and leading us. Gen 27:41-28:22 Our Salvation History is extremely important to meditate on for us to see how God never abandons us but builds an eternal family with us, if we participate. Meditate on these images throughout Advent, it is a great way to see Christmas in a different and more awesome way. Advent Confessions with several Priests will be December 13, 6:30 PM 8:30 PM Taize will take place during the confessions, in this way, those in line for confessions will experience the meditative prayer through music and help us focus on God s Love through Jesus Christ as well as His forgiveness. All Volunteers of any capacity, plan on coming to our annual appreciation breakfast on December 17 at 9:00 10:00 or 11:00 12:00 in the Lourdes Center. Peace of Christ, Praying For Vocations This week, Jerry Brandl and Family will be praying for vocations with the vocation kit. Please consider signing up and praying for more vocations to the religious life and priesthood. Ring Pittsburgh Hand Bell Choir - Sunday, December 10 at 3:00 PM in the church. Plan on this time to enter into a Spiritual Bell Meditation during Advent. The bells will help us relax and reset during the hustle and bustle of the season. Fr.. Tony

OPLATKI (Christmas Wafers) Sharing a Christmas wafer (Polish: oplatek, plural oplatki) during the Christmas Eve Vigil have been a tradition in Poland, Lithuania and Slovakia for hundreds of years. Whatever your background, it s a warm and loving way to express the sentiment of the season. Packets are available in the pamphlet rack in the vestibule of the Church for a $3 donation. CHECK OUT OUR NEW PARISH WEBSITE Ring Pittsburgh Concert December 10, 2017 Ring Pittsburgh Hand bell Choir will present a concert of Christmas Favorites on Sunday December 10, 2017 at 3:00 PM in the church. Founded in 2016, by former parishioners Mary-Rita and Jim Rossetti, Ring Pittsburgh is an auditioned community of musicians who express their musical talents through the skill of hand bell ringing. The group's mission is to musically inspire, educate and entertain audiences through the art of hand bell ringing. The concert is free and open to everyone, for more information Josh Bandish at jbandish@stbpitt.com. SANTA BRUNCH Our Santa Brunch will held on Sunday, December 3, 2017 from 11:00 AM 2:00 PM. It will be held in the Lourdes Hall. Please come and join us! We will have Santa Claus available for photos, crafts for the children and a delicious brunch.
