From the Rector Dear Friends, As this magazine comes available we are about to celebrate harvest, on the first Sunday in October 2 nd. Harvest is always a rather odd festival, although still one of the most important days in the life of a church. It s an odd festival because it has changed, and much of what we understand as harvest comes from our memories of the past. Many of us have memories of great mounds of fresh produce stacked around the church, of harvest suppers, delivering food around to the poor of the parish. Today that is, for most churches, a memory these days if churches receive produce, they prefer it in packets and tins. Instead of food distributed to the poor of the parish we pass it on to centres which help the homeless (we pass food on to the Glasgow City Mission, others to local foodbanks). As a church we will have our fairtrade stall, rather than grand harvest suppers. Some ask whether harvest has any value any more. Well, perhaps we need to answer that question by saying yes, it has value, but in a different way.... Today there is little celebration of the harvest in harvest festivals. Very little fresh produce given to pass on to the poor. For 3 many, harvest has become a celebration of the creation of which we are part, a celebration of all the bounty God gives us, and a celebration of those who help provide the food we eat. I think this is right: events like harvest do need to evolve if they are not to lose any relevance they have, and we have in the past invited local farmers to our service, and have invited local shopkeepers to join us (sadly with little response or success). We will do something similar this year. However, as we celebrate creation we also need, perhaps, to let God speak to us. Our world is created by God, and knowing it is, we know that God will communicate his love and his ways through the creation. Perhaps I just want to mention two things he may say to us. Firstly, look at the extravagance of creation there is far more to creation than what we need. Do we need chickens and turkey? Do we need red roses and white roses? Do we need mistle thrushes and song thrushes? Do we need cod and haddock? And yet that is what God gives us, simply for our enjoyment an extravagant bounty and extravagant range of things. And that can only be from two things his creativity, and his love for us. To those I like, when they visit, I give soup and bread! To Continued overleaf

Magazine & DNS Deadline From the Rector The next issue of Cyprian Life should be available in Church on Advent Sunday 27 th November The deadline for material is 20 th November and the magazine will cover December 2016 and January Please pass notes, articles, photographs and anything else that may be of interest to other members of the congregation to me by the deadline in order to give time for typesetting and printing. Electronic format is preferred since this is usually quicker and more accurate. Please let me know about what is important to you. It is great to be able to report family events and things happening in our local community. Thank you. Glasgow & Galloway Diocesan News is now up and running under the editorship of Susan Walker. I incorporate items that I hope might interest members of the congregation into this magazine. Susan is keen to encourage individual members of congregations to subscribe to the mailing list. You can do so at news.church.scot, where you can also read the latest edition. The newsletter takes the form of brief paragraphs with links to fuller articles on the Glasgow & Galloway Diocesan website and, where appropriate, other sites. The diocesan website is now at church.scot, but still works. Susan is also encouraging us to contribute by sending any items for the newsletter to her at news@church.scot. There s no stated deadline, but they need to be in a few days before the comes out (usually on the second last Friday of the month). The views expressed in Cyprian Life are not necessarily those of the Editor or of the Scottish Episcopal Church. 4 Cover Photo This is the season when we celebrate the fruitfulness of the earth that sustains us. One branch of the apple tree in the church grounds has been particularly fruitful this year. The photo shows a sample of the fruit. The ground below the tree has become covered with apples, so if you can use them for apple pie or apple sauce they are cooking apples please feel free to collect what you can use. It could be something for the Christmas Fair, but it doesn t have to be. It ll be sad to see such abundance go to waste!!

continued from page 3 those I love, I give a five course meal with three vegetables on the plate as well as the potatoes and 4 types of icecream!!!!! Extravagance is something that comes from love. And creation screams out to us God loves us. Secondly? Creation shows us that God works through death and resurrection. We are approaching autumn, and on to winter. After the harvest we see the creation in many places going to sleep, many plants dying, life seemingly taken away. And yet we know next year, next spring, new life will come and the new start will take us forward. A cycle of death on resurrection. For us it says yes, Christ is the way God would work and does work. Out of death comes new life, out of an end, comes a new beginning, out of crucifixion come resurrection. It s there in our creation, it is there in our Lord Jesus Christ. I hope you are able to join us for harvest, to see again the extravagance of the love of God, to see that God works in our lives through The Link For the latest information about events at St Cyprian s, please check the Link each week in Church or on our web site: The Link and the colour version of this magazine can be downloaded in PDF format by clicking on the links on the Publications page (older copies of the Link are in Word format). If you would like to add an event to the Link and/or the website, please the details to link@stcyprianslenzie.com or phone the Rector on death and resurrection. Best wishes Les Craft and Chat The last Monday of every month is when we come together to chat over a cup of tea or coffee while we do our favourite crafts. If you don t have a portable craft, just come and enjoy the company. The September meeting has been postponed to 3 rd October and the following two meetings are on 31 st October and 28 th November in the Choir Vestry from 1-3pm. Glennis Pastoral Care One of the important purposes of Christ s church is to provide the love and care we all need. If you, or anyone you know, would like a visit from a priest or the opportunity for a confidential chat and a prayer, please contact the Revd. Les Ireland, who will be happy to help in any way he can. St. Cyprian s also has a number of people who are authorised to visit and simply be a trusted friend who can be there to listen if you wish. Les can put you in touch with an appropriate person that may be best qualified to help. Please telephone Les on

Christ of St. John of the Cross When I arrived in Lenzie, people started asking what happened to the picture that used to hang at the far end of the hall? It took some time to learn that it was a print of the picture by Salvador Dalí called Christ of St. John of the Cross, the original of which currently hangs in Kelvingrove Art Gallery. Remarkably, some time ago we found the picture, and we have hung it in the choir vestry for the time being, although it would be good to find a better place to hang it. It is also in pretty rough condition it is ripped around the edges and the glass over the picture is long gone. It would be nice to get it reframed and restored a bit. Having said that, it is a truly stunning picture even on a print of reduced size. The original is mindbogglingly amazing and worth a visit to Kelvingrove just to see. For some, the picture is not a typical surrealist picture by Dalí. It is one of a number of religious paintings he did in the early fifties as Catholicism played an increasing part in his life (although later fading as an influence), paintings which showed the ability of a fantastic painter at his peak. This picture is possibly the most influential religious painting of the 20 th century, although based on a sketch by the 16 th century friar John of the Cross, hence the name. Painting the picture was a huge undertaking. In order to create the figure of Christ, Dalí had Hollywood stuntman Russell Saunders suspended from an overhead gantry, so he could see how the body would appear from the desired angle and also envisage the 6 pull of gravity on the human body. The depicted body of water is the bay of Port Lligat, Dalí s residence at the time of the painting. British poet John Cooper Clarke described this image as being utterly different from any other image of the crucifixion, as the angle of view conveys the hanging pain of this method of execution, whilst hiding the ordinarily clichéd facial expressions normally seen

Heavenly Creatures Harry Dunlop attends St. John s Church, Baillieston, and also works at St. Mungo's Museum of Religious life and art (on Castle St, next to St. Mungo s cathedral in Glasgow). He has recently organised an exhibition called: Heavenly Creatures: Angels in Faith, History and Popular Culture. I have been to it and it looks good! Harry has written this about it: This hands-on exhibition of paintings, decorative art and contemporary memorabilia will run until the autumn of The exhibition looks at beings similar to angels in function and form in the ancient world of the Near and Middle East and then explores our understanding of angels in modern cultures across the world today including pop music and television! Throughout the exhibition, visitors are asked questions such as What do angels look like?, What do angels do? and are encouraged to interact with these questions in a number of ways. You will find quotes from sacred scriptures, historical and contemporary writings and from people of different faiths and of none. Many are quotes from children including Glasgow Museum s own Junior panel who were involved in the interpretation and shaping of the exhibition. A personal favourite is one child s description of an angel as someone with a hula hoop on their head! The exhibition has something to engage everyone from exploring stories behind individual objects and paintings in electronic labels to dressing up and creating your own angel for younger visitors. Object highlights include a beautiful stained glass window depicting the Annunciation, the occasion when the archangel Gabriel appeared and announced to the Virgin Mary God s invitation to become the Mother of Jesus. The window designed by arts and crafts artist Christopher Whall, was made in 1898 for the private chapel of Douglas Castle in Lanarkshire. Another fascinating object is an electroplated silver shield depicting the War in Heaven; a copy of an original now in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London by Leonard Morel-Ladeuil and made in The shield displays highly detailed scenes from John Milton s epic poem Paradise Lost, written in 1667, including the Archangel Michael final victorious triumph over Lucifer, the rebel angel. This and other objects can be explored in more detail by using digital E-labels stationed nearby where visitors can explore details of the shield as well as the story of Paradise Lost and how the shield was made. The exhibition can be visited during normal museum opening times and admission is FREE. in such depictions. Although it is a picture which needs long study, long looking depiction of the crucifixion, it is devoid of at to get the full impact. Perhaps the question nails, blood, and a crown of thorns, because, to ask first as you look at it is Where is the according to Dalí, he was convinced by a light coming from? Where the light comes dream that these features would mar his from speaks about where Dalí sees life coming depiction of Christ. from, and how the light of God relates to Please feel free to spend time looking at the Christ and to us.... picture in the choir vestry. 9 Kirky Players Panto Scottish Poppy Appeal Poppyscotland reaches out to those who have served, those still serving, and their families at times of crisis and need, offering vital, practical advice, assistance and funding. Probably best known for running the iconic Scottish Poppy Appeal, which takes place again this November, Poppyscotland works all year round to raise the funds that are urgently needed to provide their life-changing services. Poppyscotland s work centres around seven key areas: tailored support and funding, advice, employment, mobility, respite, housing and mental health. While much of this work is delivered directly, collaboration with other specialist organisations for the benefit of the Armed Forces community is at the heart of Poppyscotland s approach. This ensures the most effective and efficient services are provided. For example, Poppyscotland is part of the funding partnership enabling Scottish CAB 9 Saturday 21 st January pm Lenzie Academy It s a great night out for all the family! The cost is 9 per ticket and includes a drink, a piece of fruit and some chocolate at the interval. Service to provide a relatively new and highly effective service, the Armed Services Advice Project, which has been particularly helpful to service people as they come to terms with life s demands outside the services. This is only possible with the continued support of the public through donations and fundraising. The Poppy Appeal is particularly important in funding Poppyscotland s activity with over 2m raised through its collecting tins alone. Please give generously and if you are able to get involved in the local collections, please speak to the Editor, Paul Hindle, who can put you in touch with the local organiser. Thank you.

Lenzie Branch As has become our custom, we started our 2016/17 season with a service at our September meeting. However we changed the format and had a celebration evening this year because Mothers Union is 140 years old, joining with our sister Branches from Bishopbriggs and Cumbernauld. We sang hymns, heard about Mary Sumner who began the organisation in 1876, read from Hebrews, listened to poems, heard a little of what is happening in our Diocesan group, and took part in an activity A Cloud of Witnesses which was ably led by Lucy our Diocesan Chaplain. Cava and cake followed the service, with lots of catching up with friends from other places One of the poems was Run Beloved, Run a poem based on Hebrews 12:1-3. It can be read online at: 10

run-beloved-run-a-poem-based-onhebrews-121-3/ Our meeting on 12 th October is entitled what can your pharmacist do for you? Arlene Forrest who will be our speaker that evening is a manager with Boots and should make us think about our medicines as well as pointing us in the direction of who is available to help when we have medical problems. This evening is open to all members of the congregation, so please join us if this topic is of interest to you. November will see us making flower arrangements to sell at the church Christmas Fayre. We are looking for small items that could be included in dried flower arrangements, so please hand to any of the MU ladies all contributions will be gratefully received. Our programme for the coming year is now available at the back of the church, and many of you will have received an invite to come and join us. Please consider coming to some of our meetings if the topic interests you you will be made very welcome. Maxine Gow Branch Leader 11

Rest in Peace We note the passing of two ladies who had a long association with St Cyprian s. They were both born within a few days of each other in 1933 and died on consecutive days at the end of August. The first was Doreen Garnett (10 th June th August 2016). Her funeral was held at St Cyprian s on 5 th September. The following poem printed in the funeral booklet is a reminder to take time enjoy life and not be always rushing about. Leisure What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. No time to stand beneath the boughs, And stare as long as sheep and cows: No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass: No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night. A poor life this if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. W. H. Davies 12 The second was Cynthia Frost (16 th June th August 2016). Her funeral was at Daldowie on 7 th September. Her funeral booklet also contained some poetry. The one printed here reminds us that death is a beginning as well as an end: Miss Me When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set on me, I want no rites in a gloom filled room; why cry for a soul set free! Miss me a little, but not too long and not with your head bowed low, Remember the love that we once shared; miss me, but let me go. For this is a journey that we all must take and each must go alone. It s all a part of the master plan, a step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick of heart, go to the friends we know. And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds; miss me, but let me go. Unknown author Our sympathy goes out to both their surviving husbands and their families.

All Together Now The Great Orchestra Challenge That was the title of a BBC programme featuring five amateur orchestras from around Great Britain. Each week the orchestras competed to get to the last two who were to perform in the Royal Albert Hall in London. The winner there would perform at Proms in the Park in Hyde Park on the Last Night of the Proms. Each week, we were amazed to see the orchestras rise to the challenges set by the judge, Paul Daniel, and the see the members and conductors being mentored to bring the best out of them. Then it was that moment of tension as one of the orchestras had to be eliminated. Our own Fiona Wilbraham is a cellist in one of the orchestras, the Stirling Orchestra. As you can see from the two photos here, after a number of nail-biting events, the orchestra made it through to the last two and played in the Albert Hall. Unfortunately they were not 13 chosen for the Last Night of the Proms. However, the weather on the Last Night made them wonder whether they hadn t had the better deal. Playing in the Albert Hall was the real highlight! The photo above shows Fiona with Zoe outside the Albert Hall while the picture to the left is of the orchestra on stage with the cellists in the foreground.

Murdo and the Eagle was a strange year on the Isle or Rum, that barren mountainous foreboding Island off the west of Scotland. Every year and every day the Island seemed shrouded in cloud, covered in rain, enveloped in gloom. The Red deer who lived there were used to it. Murdo, who looked after the red deer, coped with it in his warm shelter, but the rain, the cloud, the mist was what it was it was normal. But not in Some people said it was a blocking high that caused it. Some said it was El Niño that caused it. Some mentioned the Gulf Stream. Most had no idea what a blocking high was, and even less had heard of El Niño, and thought El Niño was a traveller from a foreign land. Whatever people said, it was different. It was hot. The sun shone. The clouds had gone. And it started in May. May was fabulous, the deer ran and danced as they soaked up the sun. June was hot. The deer tried to find whatever cover they could, whatever shade they could, but there was none in the middle of the day. July was terrible it was blisteringly hot, day after day after day. The deer would sit in the streams just to keep cool. They would only graze very early mornings, late evenings. And by the end of July, things were getting worse as the water in the streams seemed to disappear, and many of the streams became a series of puddles. By the end of August things were very bad. Most of the streams had dried up even the puddles. Even the great river had dried, parched from the lack of mist and rain. By the end of August the deer were thirsty beyond anything they could imagine, and some of the young and some of the old were fainting in the dry and the heat. Middle of September, the deer were desperate. So little water. The grass and beginning to curse Murdo, who looked after the deer. Messages were sent, demands made, and Murdo should do something. Murdo sent messages back. Look for my sign. My sign will save you. My sign will be obvious. My messenger is what you need. Murdo s replies only made things worse, made the deer angrier. Until they saw it. Something different. Something worse? The huge bird circled overhead. For those who had never seen one of the birds before, it seemed to circle, covering the sky. Its eyes were piercing, its talons sharp, its beak hooked and threatening. They had heard of the big birds, taking young deer, rabbits, and here was one, huge, terrifying, threatening, circling.... The bird circled, but not overhead. The bird circled to one side, moving towards a distant ridge. The deer refused to move. It was trying to trick them. It was trying to lead them to their death, over the cliffs. It simply wanted food. The Huge bird would keep returning, then moving away, but every time it appeared the deer would sit on the ground, rest their heads between their hooves and refuse to move. But then a youngster called Tom stood up. The rest shouted for him to sit down. To come back. But Tom remembered Murdo said he would send a sign, and maybe this terrifying creature was that sign nothing else had heather were dry as hay. And many were appeared. And why not follow there was 14

SING PRAISE AT ADVENT 2016 with CONCORDIA no point in staying. They would certainly die if they stayed. No-one else in the herd moved, but young Tom. He followed, towards the ridge, keeping in the middle of the circle the Giant bird was making. And then disappeared from the eyes of the herd. The herd kept their heads down. Some sad they would never see Tom again. Some shaking their heads what a fool. Others simply numbed by the heat, resigned to their fates. Tom had disappeared. All that day he didn t return. All the next day he didn t return. And by next evening he had still not appeared. So desolate was the herd at the heat, the loss, the fear, that they didn t notice the black speck walking back from the ridge. It was dark night by the time the figure arrived, and shouted come on, get up, let s go. The bird has saved us. But the deer wouldn t move. Ghosts. More monsters sent to frighten them. It was only next morning as they woke from their fearful 15 sleep that they saw him lying to the side of the herd. Tom: wet, clean, cheerful. Come on, he shouted the eagle led me to a spring. Still pouring water. Still giving clean water. Lots of it. I think it s a never ending spring. We've got to move there and we will be safe. The next summer was grey, and misty, and gloomy and wet. Just as it always was. And few remembered the great eagle sent by Murdo, who had led them to the water of life.... This is the final episode of three stories Les told at Lenzie Gala. Have you worked out the inspiration for the stories? Whose life does Murdo s parallel?
