3 The Epiphany of the Lord New Year s Blessing Heavenly Father, in this time of new beginnings, we recall how the heavens celebrated the birth of Christ. We think back to the new kingdom he proclaimed, and remember the new life we gained in our baptism. In this time of new beginnings, and at the beginning of this New Year, may we always act as good examples of the new life in you that all Christians have and be the same for others. Give us the joy that is ours as adopted members of God's family. Amen. School News Classes for St. Michael Parish School resume on Monday, January 6. Preschool classes resume January 5. Religious Education classes also resume January 6. Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy Reflection for the sixth week of the church year... [Christ] is present in his word, since it is he himself who speaks when the holy Scriptures are read in the Church (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 7) T he Second Vatican Council emphasized the place of Scripture in the liturgy. More Scripture was added to the liturgy and Scripture began to be read in the vernacular language (or the language of the people) rather than Latin. The theological nature of Scripture in the liturgy is reaffirmed by the Council, because it reminds us that in the proclamation of Scripture Christ is indeed present. The words of Scripture provide more than information, they embody Christ s very presence. The words embody Christ himself. When we listen and take to heart Christ s words, we grow closer to him. There is a building of communion in the acceptance of Christ s words between Christ and those who listen. In other words, the proclamation of Scripture builds the relationship of people with Christ himself. We come to know who Christ is and what he means for us who are called to live his words. The 50th Anniversary of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: A Parish Celebration 2013 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications. Orders: Written by Kristopher W. Seaman. Text from the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy 1982, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation (ICEL). Imprimatur granted by the Reverend Monsignor John F. Canary, Vicar General, Archdiocese of Chicago on June 5, We Remember Our Deceased Relatives and Friends January 6 Aileen Bernard 7 Clara Dyer Carole Burke 8 James Mullaney Patty Menrath 9 Mary Jane Schmitt Thomas D. Kellner 11 Michael Botsford Edward J. Fitzgerald 12 Maureen Shaffery Thank You! To all of those who so graciously gave blood this year at the St. Michael Blood Drive, the Knights of Columbus members would like to say thank you. In 2012, we had a record year. This year, we had another record year, beating last year by two units. Thank you for your help in saving lives! Please Remember in Your Prayers John Harold Tate, Jr., father of parishioner Tara Tate Koch, who died recently. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. 3

5 The Epiphany of the Lord Out of Darkness National Migration Week - January 5-11, 2014 The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has designated Out of Darkness for the theme of National Migration Week, January 5-11, National Migration Week is a time designated by the U.S. Catholic Bishops to remember the migration journey of the Holy Family, as they had to live in the shadows and cross the border into Egypt to escape death from the hands of King Herod. This year, we are called to remember today s migrants, especially the most vulnerable: children, the undocumented, refugees, asylum seekers, and victims of human trafficking living in a kind of darkness. They live in darkness and fear at risk of violence and exploitation. The Church renews its calls to reach out to these brothers and sisters through prayers, education about their struggles, supports for their integration into American life, and advocacy for comprehensive immigration reform. If you want to learn how to get more involved in the immigration issue or to sign a postcard, contact the local Justice for Immigrants coordinator at the Archdiocese, , ext or go online to You can also learn more about the impressive services provide to immigrants and refugees by Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio at and Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley at Women Together We are women of all ages who meet monthly to read and reflect on God s presence in our lives.
