PASTOR S LETTER The Greatest Love Story Ever Told Today, once again we hear the greatest story ever told. It s the story of the Passion of the Christ. We call it a story, but it goes a lot deeper than that. First of all, it s history. Despite the many efforts to discredit Jesus, the events of the cross and resurrection, and the Church, we will never stop proclaiming what happened even if people continue to pressure us to keep quiet. We can t. Jesus suffered under Pontius Pilot, was crucified, died and was buried. And now, he s alive; risen from the dead. The early followers of Jesus wouldn t stop proclaiming it even when it meant being faced with losing their own life. The martyrs of the Church are perhaps the greatest witnesses to the historical truth. From the first martyr, Stephen, until today, Christians who are given the chance to denounce Jesus Christ, don t. We don t give our own lives for a great teacher, a great man, a great saint, or a great philosopher. But we do give our lives for our Lord who sustains us and gives us life through our relationship with him, one that s meant to last forever. And that s what makes this story, this history, also a love story. Jesus Christ went through all he did for each one of us. His greatest desire is for us to share in the one relationship we re meant to experience with God. As Jesus and the Father are one, we all can share in this relationship through the Holy Spirit. Today, the passion narrative will end with Jesus being laid in the tomb. But, as we know, it s not the end of the story. To complete the story, we re given AN OPEN INVITATION Please join us as we celebrate Holy Week, and especially the Triduum: the three holiest days of our year that form one story, one celebration of Jesus love for us. On Holy Thursday (7:30 pm) we ll enter into the evening of the Lord s Supper to witness the institution of the Eucharist and the model Jesus gave us to serve one another. Following the Mass, we ll have time up until midnight to visit Jesus in the garden as we adore his Eucharistic presence in the tabernacle. On Good Friday (3:00 pm) once again we ll enter into the Passion of our Lord and will venerate the cross the great icon of faith, hope and love. At 7:30 pm, we will pray the Stations of the Cross, reliving Christ s journey to Calvary. At the Easter Vigil (7:30 pm) we ll experience the joy of the resurrection and the witness that Christ is alive, especially through the lives of those who will be baptized and those receiving the sacraments of initiation for the first time. It s the holiest night of the year and the first opportunity to sing the song we ve been longing to sing all through Lent. (Hint: it begins with an A!) If you ve never experienced the Triduum these three holy days please consider it. It s a remarkable experience that confirms that what Jesus did for us truly is the greatest love story ever told! --Fr. Mike St. Hubert 2 Hoffman Estates

LITURGY CORNER The Triduum: The Crowning of our Church Year! Adapted from an original article by Yvonne Cassa. The Paschal Triduum begins with the evening Mass of the Lord s Supper and closes with Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday, though this final liturgy is not often celebrated in parishes. The unearned gift of salvation, given from God s wondrous love, shines forth over these three days, sundown to sundown. On Holy Thursday, Jesus gives us a model of discipleship. It is not always easy to simply follow what is said to the disciples in the scriptures, so that as I have done for you, you should also do. Disciples of Jesus, of all rank, serve those who are lowly in society all the time. You will receive an invitation to come forward to have your feet washed by those who are in service to our parish community. Jesus stunned and confused his disciples by washing their feet, eating with sinners, and being contentious to those in authority. So, we begin the Triduum with humility and service on Holy Thursday evening. Lent is ended. From Thursday, we move to Good Friday struck again by God s love for us We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you for by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. Jesus, sharing in our humanity, is stripped and broken and surrenders to death, yet, conquers death that we might have unending life. It is this cross of glory that we adore some of us kneeling, some with a kiss or touch; some with a bow before Christ crucified. We should glory in the cross indeed, for it is the cross of victory. At the Easter Vigil, we fulfill the purpose for entering Lent: we are transformed. Greater evidence of transformation is in the presence of our elect and candidates seeking full communion with us, with the Church. They enter the Triduum purified from their old ways and enlightened by God s word. They come eager for a full and deeper life as a Catholic Christian with their sponsors and Catholics who are descendants of those celebrating Holy Week for centuries YOU. Our Vigil ends with the sunrise of Easter morning, Jesus Christ has risen today. We finally sing Alleluia! Please come to the liturgies of these days, especially on Holy Saturday evening at 7:30 PM for the Easter Vigil for their baptism and full communion into the Catholic Church through Confirmation and Eucharist. The liturgies of these days are worth setting time aside for they are rich, powerful, and tell us who we are as people of the Resurrection. Setting time aside is different from fitting it in among the ordinary goings-on already pressing upon our time. It is more deliberate. It means carving out the time from our busyness. Our ordinary life cannot accommodate these extraordinary events, but when they happen, we drop what we are doing and must be there. For something extraordinary, we rearrange our schedule. Attention singers & instrumentalists: If you re interested in joining the 12:15 PM Mass choir, please contact Ed Magistrado, Music Director, at or emagistrado@sainthubert.org to signup. Rehearsals will be on Tuesdays from 7:30 9:00 PM in the church. St. Hubert 4 Hoffman Estates
PALM SUNDAY OF OUR LORD S PASSION 5 MARCH 25, 2018
MORNING PRAYER DURING THE TRIDUUM We will begin each morning of the Triduum Thursday, March 29; Friday, March 30 and Saturday, March 31 with the celebration of Morning Prayer at 8:30 AM in the church. On Holy Thursday and on Holy Saturday the celebration of the Eucharist is permitted only at the Mass of the Lord s Supper (Thursday evening) and at the Vigil on Holy Saturday. No Eucharist is celebrated on Good Friday. This gives us a wonderful opportunity to come together for a different form of liturgy: Liturgy of the Hours. In the early Church, the Eucharist was reserved for Sunday. Liturgy of the Hours belonged to the ordinary prayer of each day and is still the Church s daily prayer at various times throughout the day and evening. Borrowing from the Jewish tradition, Christians began their day acknowledging God s blessings by pausing from their activities at certain times of the day and assembling for prayer. At the close of each day, God was praised with thanksgiving and invoked with pleas for a peaceful night. Liturgy of the Hours has a simple structure of psalms, scripture, and prayers and lasts about minutes. What a wonderful and peaceful way to begin these days of Paschal fasting and prayer! We are looking for faith filled people to pass on the faith to the parish children. While it may seem a bit daunting at first, it may help you to know that the vast majority of our teachers have been teaching for more than ten years and do not have a degree in Theology. Let me be clear We need you. If you are thinking about it, call and speak to me, I will be happy to answer any questions you have. We are recruiting for the coming school year beginning in September. Our greatest need, at present, is in the Confirmation Program where we have two vacancies. We meet in the school on Sunday evenings from 7:20 9:00 PM. We also need a 6 th Grade teacher who has an interest in teaching scripture for a class on Wednesday afternoons from 4:00 5:45 PM. Contact Mike Keenan, Director of Religious Education, at or mkeenan@sainthubert.org. Thank you! SPRING BLOOD DRIVE There Were 44 units of blood drawn. The units collected will potentially save 132 lives!!! Thanks to all of those who gave unselfishly of themselves to help others. Their generosity will help our neighbors in need, including cancer patients, critically ill newborns, accident victims and many more who have illnesses requiring blood products. LifeSource and the Hoffman/ Schaumburg Knights of Columbus From the Business Office: We are having problems merging the Parishioner data files with Overt Press, the envelope provider. If you have experienced problems over the last few months please know we are addressing the issue. We will be converting to a new web-based Parish Data system over the next couple of months. I appreciate your patience and understanding. We will make sure there are plenty of generic envelopes in the Narthex. Teresa McCutchan St. Hubert 6 Hoffman Estates
RON ROLHEISER Of Winners and Losers Our society tends to divide us up into winners and losers. Sadly, we don t often reflect on how this affects our relationships with each other, nor on what it means for us as Christians. What does it mean? In essence, that our relationships with each other tend are too charged with competition and jealousy because we are too infected with the drive to outdo, out-achieve, and out-hustle each other. For example, here are some of slogans that pass for wisdom today: Win! Be the best at something! Show others you re more talented than they are! Show that you are more sophisticated than others! Don t apologize for putting yourself first! Don t be a loser! These phrases aren t just innocence axioms cheerleading us to work harder; they re viruses infecting us so that most everything in our world now conspires with the narcissism within us to push us to achieve, to set ourselves apart from others, to stand out, to be at the top of the class, to be the best athlete, the best dressed, the best looking, the most musically talented, the most popular, the most experienced, the most travelled, the one who knows most about cars, or movies, or history, or sex, or whatever. At all costs we drive ourselves to find something at which we can beat others. At all costs we try to somehow set ourselves apart from and above others. That idea is almost genetically engrained in us now. And because of that we tend to tend to misjudge others and misjudge our own meaning and purpose. We structure everything too much around achieving and standing out. When we achieve, when we win, when we are better than others at something, our lives seem fuller; our self-image inflates and we feel confident and worthwhile. Conversely, when we cannot stand out, when we re just another face in the crowd, we struggle to maintain a healthy self-image. Either way, we are forever struggling with jealousy and dissatisfaction because we cannot help constantly seeing our own lack of talent, beauty, and achievement in relationship to other s successes. And so we both envy and hate those who are talented, beautiful, powerful, rich, and famous, holding them up for adulation even as we secretly wait for their downfall, like the crowd that praises Jesus on Palm Sunday and then screams for his crucifixion just five days later. This leaves us in an unhappy place: How do we form community with each other when our very talents and achievement are cause for jealousy and resentment, when they re sources of envy and weapons of competition? How do we love each other when our competitive spirits make us see each other as rivals? Community can only happen when we can let the talents and achievements of others enhance our own lives and we can let our own talents and achievements enhance, rather than threaten, others. But we re generally incapable of this. We re too infected with competitiveness to allow ourselves to not let the achievements and talents of others threaten us and actualize our own talents in a way so as to enhance the lives of others rather than to let ourselves stand out. Like our culture, we too tend to divide people into winners and losers, admiring and hating the former, looking down on the latter, constantly sizing each other up, rating each other s bodies, hair, intelligence, clothing, talents and achievements. But, as we do this, we vacillate between feeling depressed and belittled when others outscore us or inflated and pompous when we appear superior to them. And this becomes ever more difficult to overcome as we become more obsessed with our need to stand out, be special, to sit above, to make a mark for ourselves. We live in a chronic, inchoate jealousy where the talents of others are perennially perceived as a threat to us. This keeps us both anxious and less than faithful to our Christian faith. Our Christian faith invites us not to compare ourselves with others, to not make efforts to stand out, and to not let ourselves be threatened by and jealous of other s gifts. Our faith invites us to join a circle of life with those who believe that there is no need to stand out or be special, and who believe that other people s gifts are not a threat, but rather something which enriches all lives, our own included. When we divide people into winners and losers then our talents and gifts become sources of envy and weapons of competition and superiority. This is true not just for individuals but for nations as well. One of these competitive slogans within our culture tells us: Show me a good loser and I will show you a loser! Well, seen in this light, Jesus was a loser. People were shaking their heads at his death, and there was no championship ring on his finger. He didn t look good in the world s eyes. A loser! But, in his underachieving we all achieved salvation. Somewhere there s a lesson there! Used with permission of the author.
