2 PASTOR S LETTER Come after me. Mark 1:17 In the gospel today, Jesus invites Peter, Andrew, James and John to come after me. And immediately, they leave everything they have to follow Jesus. The phrase come after me is pretty powerful. As Jesus current disciples, we re called to be the Body of Christ in the world. We re his hands, his voice, his words of comfort, his kindness, his thirst for justice, his desire for peace. So, to come after him is to be transformed. Those who stay with Jesus (the message of last week s gospel) discover that all the gifts and talents God gives us aren t just to help us do what we do for a living, but to be disciples of Christ. The four fisherman Jesus called were eventually transformed into fishers of men, and that s when they found their true identity. Jesus gives us what we need to see the world through his eyes and to be his disciples. We come after him because he s shown us the way and how to walk the path. Around the Parish: Let there be lights! As many of you know, as the days became shorter and shorter, it seemed the lights in the parking lot became fewer and fewer. We ve been working with Delaware Electric to help install new, high efficiency, longer lasting, environmentally-friendly LED lights. (Say that 10 times fast!) About twice a year we had to change bulbs around the parking lots. These new lights will last about 15 years a huge improvement! We still have some more to install, but we re almost there. January 17 was St. Hubert Catholic School Day in Hoffman Estates! This past Tuesday, after the all-school Mass, Mayor Bill McLeod and some members of the Village Board came to St. Hubert to present the official proclamation. The Village wanted to affirm the generosity of the students who helped coordinate the Soup-er Stadium Food Challenge. As a parish, we collected over 8,000 food items to help stock the Catholic Charities food pantries in the Chicagoland area. Marching for Life. As Catholics, we value human life from conception to natural death. This week we pray for all those who are Marching for Life in Washington DC, especially the incredible number of teens and young adults who make the trip each year. Our own Right to Life group will also be handing out baby bottles this weekend as we take part in The Baby Bottle Project. It s a simple way to raise money to support the work of The Women s Centers here in Chicago, who in turn help pregnant mothers and families needing help, often in the midst of a crisis. Catholic Schools Week is Coming. As a parish, we ll be celebrating our Catholic school beginning with 9 a.m. Mass on January 28 followed by an Open House right afterward. This weekend, in addition to St. Hubert, school parents and students are visiting the Church of the Holy Spirit, St. Marcelline and St. Matthew to spread the good news about our school. If you have time, stop by the table in the narthex to meet some of our school families and hear about the good things happening there. Alumni, please stop by to let us know what you ve been up to. As we head into a new week, may God bless you and lead you in all you do, Fr. Mike St. Hubert 2 Hoffman Estates

4 LITURGY CORNER 3 rd Sunday of Ordinary Time "So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him." What did Zebedee think about all of this? His sons and his partners, James and John, suddenly left their post and followed Jesus. So there he stood in the boat with a crew of employees, but not one of his sons. We can't help but wonder whether Zebedee was in favor of this promise that his heirs would become "fishers of men." Most likely, this event was the cause of some familial tension. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus instructs us to love and serve others for the love of God. But the Lord also makes it clear that our devotion to him is meant to trump our devotion to anything--or anyone--else. For our part, we are called to allow this divine allegiance to exist in those we love, even when it means a sacrifice for us as well. Parents for example, like Zebedee, are called to encourage their children to follow the Lord's call. A son or daughter's vocation to religious life certainly exemplifies this kind of sacrifice for a parent who might have had a different plan in mind. But in truth every son and daughter has a vocation from God and parents have the opportunity to support and assist their children as they seek to hear and follow God's special plan for their lives. We don't know for sure how Zebedee responded to the vocation of his sons, but we know that James and John were counted among the Twelve Apostles and that their devotion and dedication helped to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Regardless of what he might have thought as he stood in that boat, we can be quite sure that looking back now, Zebedee can rejoice heartily in the choice of his sons to leave their nets and follow Christ. Monday, January 22, 2018 DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE LEGAL PROTECTION OF UNBORN CHILDREN Pope Francis has said that respect for life is not just about the unborn child in the womb, but also about the least of our brothers and sisters. Yes, it is even upon the undocumented resident alien who has no voice but ours. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are all called to protect the voiceless. Let us pray... Good and gracious God, you blew into our nostrils the breath of life. You are the One to whom we owe our very existence. Give us the courage to take that unpopular position of protecting those who have no voice, the unborn child in the womb to the person taking his or her last breath. The life you have given us is a gift beyond measure. Embolden us to speak the truth about protecting the child, the elderly, and the one without a voice in the public square. With thankful hearts, we ask all this of the One God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. St. Hubert 4 Hoffman Estates

7 Importance of Understanding Domestic Violence The U.S. Surgeon General recently declared domestic violence to be the #ONE health concern in our country today. Understanding the definition of domestic violence can help you take action against it. Some people may not even realize that they are inflicting domestic violence on someone else. On the flipside, victims will not know to take action against their abusers if they do not realize that what is being inflicted upon them is, in fact, domestic violence. Likewise, friends and loved ones of victims are in a better place to help if they understand what domestic violence looks like. Therefore, it is important that people understand the definition of domestic violence and the many forms it can take. Definition of domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain control over another intimate partner. It come in the form of Physical Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Emotional Abuse, Economic Abuse, Psychological Abuse, Threats, Stalking, Cyberstalking. Domestic violence victims often report: I didn t know it was abuse. I thought I could fix it. I didn t tell anyone. These are traps that keep people bound. GET HELP. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Domestic violence. Dating Violence. No Excuse! If you or someone you know is being abused, seek help today. In an emergency, please dial 911. 8 REV. RON ROLHEISER, OMI John of the Cross teaches that within spirituality and morality there are no exempt areas. Simply put, you cannot be a saint or a highly moral person if you allow yourself a moral exemption or two. Thus, I may not allow myself to split off one moral flaw or sinful habit and see it as unimportant in the light of my positive qualities and the overall good that I do. For John of the Cross, you cannot be a saint and have a moral blind-spot, even if it s a minor one. A bird tethered to a rock, he says, cannot fly irrespective of whether the cord holding it is a cable or a string. The same is true for our efforts to protect life and foster justice in our world. The protection of life and the promotion of justice are all of one piece. We cannot be an authentic prophet and have a few moral blind spots. A huge consequence flows from this, namely, we cannot treat issues like abortion, nuclear war, lack of ecological sensitivity, the plight of refugees, racism, sexism, poverty and inequality, poor access to health care, unequal access to education, sexual irresponsibility, and discrimination against the LGBT community in isolation from each other, as if these were wholly discrete issues. Whether we admit it or not, these areas are all inextricably interconnected. To quote Cardinal Bernardin: The success of any one of the issues concerning life requires a concern for the broader attitude in society about the respect for human life. That s a strong challenge for all of us, on all sides of the ideological spectrum. Thus, those of us who are concerned about abortion need to accept that the problem of abortion cannot be effectively addressed without at the same time addressing issues of poverty, access to health care, sexual morality, and even capital punishment. The interconnection here is not wholly mystical. It s real. Abortion is driven more by poverty and lack of adequate support than by any liberal ideology. Hence, the struggle against abortion must also focus on the issues of poverty and support for pregnant women. As well, to morally accept killing in one area (capital punishment) helps sanction its acceptance in another area (abortion). Sexual morality must also be addressed since abortion is the inevitable bi-product of a society within which two people who are not married to each other have sex with each other. It s all one piece, and any opposition to abortion that fails to adequately recognize the wider perspective that more fully defines Pro-life leaves many sincere people unable to support anti-abortion groups. Conversely, those of us who are concerned with the issues The Seamless Garment of poverty, health-care, capital punishment, ecology, war, racism, sexism, and LGBT rights, need to accept that these issues cannot be effectively addressed without also addressing the issue of abortion. Again, the interconnection isn t just mystical, it s empirical: Failure to be sensitive to who is weak and vulnerable in one area deeply compromises one s moral standing on other issues that deal with the weak and the vulnerable. We must advocate for and strive to protect everyone who falls victim within our present way of living, and that includes the unborn. It s all of one piece! There can be no exempt areas, thus opposition to the protection of the unborn is not just antithetical to what s central within a social justice agenda, but it, perhaps more than anything else, leaves liberal ideology and its political allies compromised in a way that allows many sincere people to withhold their support. Clearly, of course, nobody is asked to give equal energy to every justice issue in the world. Accepting that none of these issues can be effectively dealt within isolation shouldn t stop us from passionately working on one issue or another. But knowing that these issues are all of one piece does demand that we always recognize that, however important our particular issue, we may not see it in simple black and white, without nuance, as an issue that can be dealt with within one ideological, political, or religious silo. We must always be sensitive to the whole, to the big picture, to the intricate interconnections among all these social issues. And, not least, we must be humble before and sensitive to our own moral inconsistencies. We will, this side of eternity, always have them and we must forgive ourselves for them and not let perfection, that fact we can t be fully consistent, be the enemy of the good, that fact that we can do some good work that is effective. But acknowledging both our own inconsistencies and the complexities of the issues should make us more open to listening to the views of others and make us less doctrinaire and fundamentalist in our own attitudes. All the issues that deal with justice and peace, are of one piece, one whole, one moral corpus, one seamless garment; and, like the soldiers casting dice for Jesus clothing, we should hesitate to tear this garment into different pieces. 9 ST. HUBERT MINISTRY OF CARE REGISTRATION IS COMING TO A CLOSE HAVE YOU BEEN THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A MINISTER OF CARE? Purpose of Ministry During a time of failing health when the need to connect with the faith is at its greatest, people may be too ill to come to Church to receive communion. Ministers of Care are parishioners who bring the Eucharist to patients in the hospital, nursing homes, and homebound parishioners. Ministers of Care help individuals nurture their spiritual lives when their physical well-being is compromised and they need to maintain a connection with their Catholic community. Ministers of Care have a deep devotion to the Holy Eucharist, are open to sharing prayer and faith with the sick, and willing to undertake prerequisite initial training for the ministry. They also are committed to attending Ministry of Care Enrichment Days. Benefits This ministry is a unique opportunity to serve others and to witness the faith to those in need or crisis. In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke we see children being blessed by Jesus. The disciples were all about shooing the children away. Once again, we see a teachable moment for the Lord. In this presentation we will explore the idea of grace, gift, and blessing in regards to our very real lives. Grace, gift, and blessing are not ephemeral wisps that float around us, but integral aspects of our lives as Christians. Each of us is called to bless and be blessed. Each of us is directed to be blessing to the world. Through prayer, discussion, and guided reflection, we will enter the grace and gift of blessing. To quote from Sr. Joan Chittister, Blessing is not magic, and it is not superstition. It is recognition of the fact that God s wonders are worked for us every day. We are pleased to welcome back our own Kathy Drennan. Kathy has been involved in church ministry for over 40 years.
