2 PASTOR S LETTER: Dear Friends, I am grateful to the more than 200 parishioners who attended the Thank You dinner last week. A special thanks to our staff who planned and executed the evening in the Multi Purpose Room. To the many others who are involved in ministry, but could not attend, I thank you for serving the people in your particular ministry here at St. Hubert. Below are some stats that are an addendum to the financial report which we published in September. This gives you an idea of the sacramental side of what we do. Thanks to parishioner, John Stevens, for suggesting that we publish this data. We all know that it is a time to prepare for Christmas. We also are aware of how hard it is to keep a spiritual focus when we are bombarded with Christmas ads, shopping, and the general busyness of the season. An article will appear in our bulletin from our Liturgy Team giving us a "sense of the season." It will remind us that we must wake up and stay awake to the prompting of the Holy Spirit in our lives. During a time of transition in our Church, our country, and our parish, we will be reminded to not give up, nor be afraid. The Lord will be with us. I pray with you that this Advent season will be a time for all of us to stay awake, set aside our fears, and prepare for the Christ Child on Christmas Day. Rev. Robert C. Rizzo

4 LITURGY CORNER 1 st Sunday of Advent "Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come." Jesus doesn't tell us when he will come again; but he does tell us all we need to know. First, he leaves no doubt in our minds that he will in fact return--this isn't a question we have to debate. And secondly, he tells us what we need to do to be ready: stay awake! As long as we don't doze off while we're waiting, everything will be all right. So our task is a relatively simple one. We are called to be on the lookout. We are supposed to be ready for the Lord when he appears. This is a straightforward instruction to be sure. But it does contain an inherent challenge: it's often much easier to hit the snooze button than to get up and at 'em. It's our task, however, to make sure we don't give in to the temptation to fall back asleep. This is what the season of Advent helps us to do. It's like the Church's alarm clock, ringing with persistence in our ears: Wake up! Throw off the covers of apathy and distraction! Jesus is coming! Get up and get your house in order before he arrives! What exactly this means will be different for all of us--the particular behaviors we need to change, the specific virtues we need to develop-- all of this is unique to each individual. But our common goal is the same--to clean house in our hearts and make ourselves ready to welcome the Lord. Yes, his return at the end of time will be a momentous event, but even if we never experience it during our lifetime, Jesus still wants to come to us here and now, to dwell in our hearts through the presence of his Spirit. This Advent, let's be ready to welcome the Lord every minute of every day. St. Hubert Prayer Shawl Ministry will meet on Sunday, December 4, at 1:15 PM in the Dorothy Day Room of the Parish Ministry Center. If you are interested in finding out what this ministry is about, please join us! Our members knit and crochet beautiful shawls in a prayerful way to be given out to members of our community. We meet monthly to share our work and pray for the recipients of these shawls. Yarn and instructions are provided and we'll even teach you to knit or crochet. New members are always welcome! 5 A SENSE OF THE SEASON Advent is a season of preparation: for the celebration of the birth of Jesus 2000 years ago, and for Christ s second coming. We celebrate the past of the incarnation, the present of God with us, and the future of Christ s coming at the end time. We journey through the season dreaming along the way in anticipation, expectation, and joy and busyness. It is also a season of renewed awareness of our inner journey, where we look for God. Scripture tells us, WAKE UP! STAY AWAKE! Be up for the challenge! Isaiah invites us to climb up the highest mountain. Mountain climbing is the challenge. It is the journey. Mountain climbing is hard work. Today, our mountain climbing is within us. It is in finding God within us. God is with us in our struggles and trials. It is in the difficulties that we find God. Trust in God. Sometimes, we get worked up about things. We worry, but God is there saying, Trust me. Do not be afraid, even with illogical events. In fact, we should thank God for everything, even our trials. Sometimes, it is in the trials that we have our closest encounter with God. Challenge is about being human. Trust is about God. Being aware that God is with us, I need not fear no matter what is happening in my life or in the world. I can put one foot in front of the other and move forward because God is with me. I can renew my trust in Him. I can believe in His promises. I can dream of the fullness of the Kingdom of wonderful things. In the gospel on the second Sunday of Advent, St. John the Baptist tells us we must produce good fruit. What does good fruit look like? It is how we meet God every day. It is little things, big things, attitude, how we treat people, how kind, how respectful, how thoughtful we are of others. It is how we add to the fullness of the Kingdom. When the Israelites didn t trust their leaders, the temptation was to draw back, live their own life give in to idolatry. Today, don t pull back, God is with us and will not abandon us. Be encouraged. Find out where God is so we can move forward on the journey. God will strengthen the hands that are feeble, make firm the knees that are weak, and say to those whose hearts are frightened, Be strong, fear not! Here is your God. Don t complain. Answer the call to conversion. Trust in God. It is an act of holiness everyday. Scripture describes the vision of the fullness of God s Kingdom, the vision of wonderful things: turning swords into ploughshares, spears into pruning hooks; harmony in all of creation. All that we know will be different. These strong images of peace and paradise create in us a longing a waiting and yearning. It is with the endurance and encouragement of scripture that we might have hope. May the journey through Advent bring you to the top of the mountain, and keep your vision on the Lord. 55+ Slices & Strikes and Bocce Ball! 10 The following information is brought to you by St. Hubert s Domestic Violence Ministry Children and Domestic Violence Part II Children who have been exposed to domestic violence often learn destructive lessons about the use of violence and power in relationships in addition to the physical, behavioral, psychological, and cognitive effects. These lessons can have a powerful negative effect on children in social situations and relationships throughout childhood and in later life. Children may learn that it is acceptable to exert control or relieve stress by using violence, or that violence is linked to expressions of intimacy and affection. Children who grow up observing one of their parents being abused, grow up with a role model of intimate relationships in which one spouse uses intimidation and violence over the other spouse to get their way. Because children have a natural tendency to identify with strength, they may ally themselves with the abuser and lose respect for their seemingly helpless other parent. Abusers typically play into this by putting the spouse down in front of their children. Seeing one of their parents treated with enormous disrespect, teaches children that they can disrespect people as their parent has done. Most experts believe that children who are raised in abusive homes learn that violence is an effective way to resolve conflicts and problems. They may replicate the violence they witnessed as children in their teen and adult relationships and parenting experiences. DeFrisco, Principal Marcia Larson, Assistant Principal Student Council Representatives Student Council representatives take on additional roles in leadership, responsibility and service at St. Hubert School. They serve as ambassadors for the school and maintain high academic standards while acting as positive role models for all students. Along with serving the school community, representatives spearhead fundraising for local charities demonstrating leadership beyond the classroom experience. National Make a Difference Day came to life at St. Hubert School on October 21, St. Hubert fifth graders and Student Council members, along with the entire St. Hubert School student body, collected over 1,250 nonperishable food and other items to stock the food pantry at Schaumburg Township. Parent volunteers caravanned in cars that the students packed and sent off to Schaumburg Township. This is an annual service project for St. Hubert School. You will confirm the date for Baptism by attending the Baptism Preparation Meeting. MARRIAGES Please do not reserve your banquet hall before confirming the date with the church. Set your date by calling the Parish Office as early as possible as you plan your wedding at least 6 months before the wedding. Weddings take place on Saturdays at 2:00 PM. Weekdays and Sundays must be arranged individually. RECONCILIATION Saturday after 4:30 PM Mass, or by appointment.
