2 PASTOR S LETTER Staying Connected In today s gospel, Jesus gives us a meaningful metaphor about having a relationship with God. Jesus is like a grape vine that flourishes; we are like the branches that grow out of the vine. And when we stay connected to the vine, which nurtures and provides life, we produce good fruit. A grape vine is meant, of course, to produce grapes. However, the Christian who is connected to Christ our source of life produces the fruits of the Holy Spirit, which St. Paul identified as joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. When we see these qualities alive in our lives and in our community, we know we are connected to the one who gives us life. It continues to amaze me how deeply rooted these qualities are in our St. Hubert family. Whenever we welcome new parishioners into our community, as we did last weekend, we hear people tell us that what they find at St. Hubert is the feeling of being at home. They feel the goodness, kindness, and faithfulness that isn t forced but genuine to who we are together. But then, one of the great charisms of St. Hubert, since the beginning, has been hospitality. Another is that we have many, many ways we can participate in living the gospel through our ministries that provide all kinds of opportunities to put faith into action. There are many ways to use our gifts and talents to produce the kind of good fruit a life with Jesus instills. Even if someone isn t quite sure where their talents are or how they can get involved whether it s at St. Hubert or elsewhere just let us know and we ll help connect you. Staying connected to Jesus is staying connected to those things that give life meaning, purpose and reveal who we truly are. Jesus gave us the Church to stay connected to each other, but so importantly to stay connected to Him. Jesus Christ nurtures us and feeds us with his very self individually and together. Stay Connected! A great way to stay connected to all that s going on at St. Hubert is to subscribe to FlockNotes a way to receive notes and updates about what s happening in parish life. You can choose how you d like to connect and even what kind of news from the parish you d like to receive. It s a great way to stay connected between Sundays! Sign up on our website or text sthubert to Congratulations to the Newly Confirmed! On Saturday, Bishop George Rassas returned to St. Hubert to confirm 119 young people from St. Hubert School and our Religious Education Program. They received the fullness of the gift of the Holy Spirit into their lives to keep them connected to Christ and the Church. Please join the Confirmandi in giving thanks to their parents, sponsors, and catechists who helped walk with them through this two year journey of prayer and preparation! Our Confirmandi are witnesses of Easter that Christ is alive in our world and able to touch our hearts and lives. Through Him, with Him and in Him, we find life. Let s continue to stay connected through the faith and life in Christ we share! --Fr. Mike St. Hubert 2 Hoffman Estates

5 RON ROLHEISER Carrying Tension One of the things we re asked to do as Christians is to help take away the sins of the world as Jesus did. How? Jesus took away the sins of the world by holding, carrying, purifying, and transforming tension, that is, by taking in the bitterness, anger, jealousy, hatred, slander, and every other kind of thing that s cancerous within human community, and not giving it back in kind. In essence, Jesus did this by acting like a purifier, a water filter of sorts: He took in hatred, held it, transformed it, and gave back love; he took in bitterness, held it, transformed it, and gave back graciousness; he took in curses, held them transformed them, and gave back blessing; and he took in murder, held it, transformed it, and gave back forgiveness. Jesus resisted the instinct to give back in kind, hatred for hatred, curses for curses, jealousy for jealousy, murder for murder. He held and transformed these things rather than simply re-transmit them. And, in this, he wants imitation, not admiration. Christian discipleship invites us, like Jesus, to become a lamb of God, a purifier, that helps take tension out of our families, communities, friendship circles, churches, and work-places by holding and transforming it rather than simply give it back in kind. But that s not easy. Jesus did this, but the gospels say that he had to sweat blood to achieve it. To carry tension is to fill with tension ourselves and, as we know, this can be unbearable. We don t have God s strength and we aren t made of steel. As we try to carry tension for others, what do we do with our own tensions? How do we carry tension without becoming resentful and bitter? How do we carry another s cross without, however subtly, sending him or her the bill? This isn t easy, as every health professional can tell you. Tension wreaks havoc inside us, physically and emotionally. You can die of high blood pressure or of disappointment. But there are some rules that can help. First, carrying tension for others does not mean putting up with abuse or not confronting pathologically or clinical dysfunction. To love someone, as we now know, does not mean accepting abuse in the name of love. Second, we need to find healthy outlets to release our own tensions. However we should never download them on the same people for whom we are trying to carry them. For example, parents carry tension for their children, but, when frustrations build up, they should not angrily vent those frustrations back on the kids themselves. Rather they should deal with their own tensions away from the children, with each other and with friends, when the kids are in bed, over a bottle of wine. The same holds true for everyone: We should never vent our frustrations on the very person or persons for whom we are trying to carry tension. Finally, in order to deal with the frustrations that build up in us, we need, in the midst of the tensions, to be connected to something (a person, a friendship, a hand, a God, a creed, a perspective) beyond ourselves and the situation we re in. Scripture offers some wonderful images for this. It tells us, for example, that as Steven was being stoned to death out of hatred and jealousy, he kept his eyes raised to heaven. That s not so much a physical description of things, as every artist knows, but a commentary on how Steven kept himself from drowning in the spinning chaos that was assaulting him. He stayed connected to a person, a hand, a friendship, an affirmation, a perspective, and a divine power outside of the madness. We see the same thing, just a different metaphor, in the story of the three young men who are thrown into the blazing furnace in the Book of Daniel. We re told that they walked around, right in the midst of the flames, untouched by the fire because they were singing sacred songs. Like Steven, they sustained their love and faith amidst bitter jealousy and hatred by staying connected to something outside of the fiery forces that were consuming everyone else. We need to contemplate that lesson. Like Jesus, and like everyone else who s ever walked this planet, we all find ourselves forever inside families, communities, churches, friendships, and work-circles that are filled with tension of every kind. Our natural temptation, always, is to simply give back in kind, jealousy for jealousy, gossip for gossip, anger for anger. But what our world really needs is for some women and men, adults, to step forward and help carry and purify this tension, to help take it away by transforming it inside themselves. But that s not easy. Like Jesus, it will involve sweating blood. So, as we volunteer to step into the fire, it s wise not to go in alone, but to stay connected to some hand, some friend, some creed, and some God who will help sustain us in love and faith, right inside the madness and fire. 6 Children s Ministry of Initiation RITE OF WELCOME 2018 May 6 at the 9:00 AM Mass Over the past several months, a number of children with their families have become a part of Children s Ministry of Initiation (CMI). These children are baptized Catholic and are all preparing for the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. + Aydan Collins, Angelo Green, Mychal Modovsky, Adrian Orzol, Marie Ramos, Winston Thompson, Zuanna Balak + They will make public their intention to follow Jesus and continue in sacramental preparation for the initiation sacraments. From this point on, these children, who are already baptized, will be called candidates. As part of our mission, the entire community is called upon to welcome and support these children in their formation and discernment. It will be our duty to pray for them and with them throughout the year in the liturgy especially in the Rite of Sending for Election and Continuing Conversion, in the early spring of 2019, and the Rites of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil in We will be asked to help them learn about our faith in the traditions of our Church as they continue to participate in CMI and as they grow in appropriating a gospel life that connects faith with action. Certain people have also been asked to assist them and their families in varied support roles as sponsors, godparents, and catechists Thanks for joining us in prayer as they make this important step on their journey of faith If you have an unbaptized child over the age of seven or uncatechized child over the age of 8 who is interested in receiving the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, please contact Marie Staffa at , ext. 124 or mstaffa@sainthubert.org. If you have a relative or neighbor who is experiencing an illness or disability that keeps him or her from participating in the Sunday liturgy, please let us know. St. Hubert has a large corps of Ministers of Care, each of whom is eager to be of service bringing the Body of Christ to those who are unable to be present for Eucharist. In a parish as large as St. Hubert, we need your assistance in bringing to our attention those who are hospitalized or homebound. Due to privacy issues and court cases, many hospitals do not call a parish to alert the staff that a parishioner is in the hospital. The way that we get word is if the patient gives a release to a hospital chaplain or visiting Minister of Care or if a relative calls. When a hospitalized person returns home, she or he is often not immediately strong enough to return to church for Eucharist. Again, the parish Ministry of Care was developed to render this exact service to our sick and absent members. Sometimes a person doesn t want to be a bother or regards a request for a home Communion call as a sign of dire illness. Visiting the sick is no bother, but rather an opportunity for a fellow parishioner to give the service for which she or he has trained. Requesting a Communion visit is recognition of the value of the Lord s care and His nourishing, healing presence. Any parish member who is homebound, whether for a few weeks or a longer period, is urged to act on that recognition and request a Ministry of Care call. Please call Lynn Howard at to arrange for visits to yourself or your loved ones. Divine Mercy Devotion Every Thursday, after the Communion Service (about 7:30 AM), we will pray the chaplet of the Divine Mercy. Everyone is invited to participate. If there is a question, call Pat at , ext St. Hubert 6 Hoffman Estates

7 To all Liturgical Ministers: Please send all unavailable dates for the months of June through August to Jackie Green no later than May 7 th. Her is jaygee222@sbcglobal.net. CHILDREN S MINISTRY OF INITIATION (CMI) The Catechumenate for Children/Teens, which is an Adaptation of the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA), is the process by which unbaptized young people of the age of reason come into the Church. (Infant Baptism is only for those children under the age of reason.) Older children who are already baptized, but who are uncatechized, also can prepare to celebrate the sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist together with their peers during the Easter Vigil or at a Rite of Full Communion. The following is the criteria for attendance for CMI: Does your child fall into one of these areas? Unbaptized. Baptized in another Christian tradition and now wants to be a Catholic. Baptized in the Catholic Church but has had little or no religious education, training, catechism classes, etc. and wants to celebrate First Communion. For more information contact Marie Staffa at , ext. 124 or mstaffa@sainthubert.org. Interested in Becoming Catholic? Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) The RCIA is for adults who: are interested in learning more about the Catholic Church. have never celebrated Baptism. have celebrated Baptism in another faith and are interested in the Catholic Church. are baptized Catholics who have not yet received Eucharist or Confirmation. are married to a Catholic and attend Mass, but just don t know what the next step is to become one of the Catholic faithful. Every year adults are welcomed into the Catholic Community through RCIA. It is a learning and loving process in which conversion of the heart brings you to Jesus Christ who is our Lord and Savior. This process will present the Catholic faith journey in an open and comfortable environment. Participants in past RCIA classes have come from many different backgrounds, yet all have a common interest in learning about the Catholic Faith. The RCIA is a tour of faith: through the initial stages of asking and seeking, through beginning involvement with Christian/ Catholic people, through hearing the Gospel proclaimed and by faithful reflection and prayer on this Word of God, through study and discussion about the Catholic experience, through doubts and hesitations, through discernment of God s call for them as individuals, through the steps of commitment, through the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) For more information, contact Marie Staffa at , ext. 124 or staffa@sainthubert.org. Pope Leo XIII said, "The Rosary is the most excellent form of prayer and the most efficacious means of attaining eternal life. It is the remedy for all our evils, the root of all our blessings. There is no more excellent way of praying." May is the month that we honor Our Blessed Mother. Every Friday morning at 6:30 AM, we gather in church to pray the rosary. It would be wonderful if you could join in this beautiful prayer. 5 TH SUNDAY OF EASTER 7 APRIL 29, 2018

Catholic Charities New Hope Apartments: A Transitional Housing Program for Homeless Families March Update Family #30 Our mom has made great progress with her goals. New Hope is so happy that she has begun working on her GED with a program that s designed for people with learning disabilities. She found this resource, called the Living Free Program, on her own. The program needs to be completed in 90 days and our mom is very excited because she wants to pursue a license in cosmetology. She is still saving! With the help of her tax refund, she has plans to reinstate her license and buy an affordable car. Her children are stable and happy! Goals: Save up at least 3 month s rent by saving her IRS tax refund. Obtain her GED. Apply for low income housing. Obtain her driver s license by paying off outstanding debts. Family #31 This mom is certainly on the right track and doing well reaching her goals. New Hope asked her to speak at a recent New Hope Fundraiser due to the progress she is making. She recently purchased a car and no longer has to pay for an Uber or friends to take her places. Having her own transportation has brought a sense of relief for our mom and the children. She was offered a promotion to become a full-time manager. She is currently learning the additional skills needed for her new position. School is going well, however, she had to drop two classes because of her work trip. She reported that she missed out on important classes which she could not make up so she will re-enroll next semester. Unfortunately, this pushes her graduation date back, but she could not miss her job training trip. Goals: Save up at least 3 month s rent by saving her IRS tax refund. Attend work and school as scheduled. Apply for low income housing. New Hope would like to thank the Peace and Justice Cluster Parishes for all the support that they have extended to these families. May God continue to bless you for all you do for New Hope. St. Hubert 12 Hoffman Estates
