4 LITURGY CORNER 24 th Sunday in Ordinary Time "The Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, 'This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.'" Jesus knew these self-righteous religious leaders were complaining. And he knew they needed to learn a lesson. So, in addition to giving a lived example of welcoming the company of "tax collectors and sinners," Jesus also directly taught the skeptics about the importance of welcoming those who have been lost. Today's Gospel gives a powerhouse lineup of three parables that all teach a similar message: rejoice over the lost sheep, rejoice over the lost coin, and rejoice over the return of the lost son. The theme can be summarized in the simple directive: rejoice don't reject. When someone who isn't part of the "fold" appears in church, this is cause for rejoicing! It should not be cause for gossip, sideways glances, or nervous whispers about what to do or say. Rather a genuine smile and word of welcome would be in order at the very least, and a heartfelt invitation to join the community would be totally appropriate. Too often we become complacent about our Christian company. We get used to seeing the same people every Sunday and forget about the "lost" men and women who are outside the bounds of our comfort zone. Jesus gives us the image of an active shepherd who goes "after the lost one until he finds it," and a diligent widow who will "sweep the house, searching carefully" until she finds her coin. He tells us of a father who "ran to his son, embraced and kissed him," in spite of the separation they had faced. We too are called to take initiative in seeking out those who are lost, and to rejoice heartily when they finally do come back home. Liturgical Publications Inc. CHILDREN S MINISTRY OF INITIATION (CMI) Some of our children may be new to the parish and, for a variety of reasons, may need to receive sacraments other than at the designated grade levels. Children s Ministry of Initiation (CMI) is a process for children 7 years of age or older. CMI is a vibrant part of the parish welcoming and evangelical efforts for families wishing to learn more about becoming a Catholic Christian or reconnecting to the Church. CMI provides families with the opportunities for religious education, prayer, service, and reception of the sacraments (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist). The children involved in this process of Religious Education receive their sacraments at the Easter Vigil in the second year of participation in CMI. Immediate preparations are now underway for our CMI sessions to begin in October. Parents and grandparents, if you are interested in enrolling your child, teen, or grandchild, please call Marie Staffa at , ext. 124 or her at mstaffa@sainthubert.org. A Catechist is needed to work with the parents/adults in CMI (Children s Ministry of Initiation) We know that parents are the first and most important educators of their children. Adults who are willing to share their love, support, and faith as catechists and small group leaders also are influential in the hearts of children and their families. We are grateful to those who share the gifts of time, skills, and faith with our parish programs. We invite you, to consider making a commitment to CMI this year. Please contact Marie Staffa at , ext. 124 or mstaffa@sainthubert.org. We begin in October. You would meet with the parents after the 9:00 AM Mass. It is not every Sunday, so it allows for a little flexibility. St. Hubert 4 Hoffman Estates
5 ANOINTING OF THE SICK AT MASS Sunday, October 9 th at the 6:00 PM Mass A communal celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will occur on Sunday October 9 th. Please mark your calendar and join us. Whether you want to receive the sacrament yourself or pray with and for those who are being anointed, you are invited to participate. The sacrament s name, Anointing of the Sick (as opposed to the old Extreme Unction ), emphasizes the important point that this is a sacrament for the living. It is the Church s ordinary rite for the strengthening of those whose health is weakened by illness or age. Who might choose to be anointed? The sacrament is for anyone with serious illness. For some, it is an ongoing struggle in need of God s healing strength. For others, it is a new, and perhaps soon cured, condition with surgery or other treatment. All illness brings anxiety, and often, serious worry. Here are some persons who might choose to receive the sacrament: those facing surgery, subject to chronic disease, wrestling with depression, anxiety or addictions, those aware of growing weakness, those seeking the healing of loss or grief. Children, as well as adults of all ages, can be anointed. Caregivers who are seriously affected by the illness of a spouse, parent or child may also be anointed. In the Anointing of the Sick, not only are the sick ministered to, but they minister to us by witnessing their faithfulness to Christ and their move to him in hope, even in the midst of their suffering. St. Hubert Ministers of Care will assist in the sacrament, signing in those to be anointed, standing with them during the anointing, and introducing them to the priest who comes to them in their row. Ministers of Care cannot know everyone who might receive strength and comfort from this sacrament. Please, if you know someone, invite them to come with you to 6:00 PM Mass on October 9 th and assure them of our prayers. Even if you will not be present for these liturgies, remember to pray for the sick of the parish. For more information, please contact Lynn Howard at or her at Godsgal56@aol.com. The Village of Hoffman Estates informed us that a new storm sewer project will have Grand Canyon Street, north of Bode, closed to thru traffic. They expect the work to be completed mid-october. Detours will be posted. Travel Safely! Prayer Shawl Ministry Meeting Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1:15 PM Parish Ministry Center Dorothy Day Room We begin our 1st meeting of the Fall season this Sunday. Won't you join us? We always welcome new members! We gather for prayer and fellowship while knitting/ crocheting lovely shawls for those in our community who have a need for the comfort that these shawls provide. For more information, contact Karen Starke at or karen.e.starke@gmail.com. BECOMING CATHOLIC: Are you interested in becoming Catholic? Is someone you know interested in becoming Catholic? 8 REV. RON ROLHEISER, OMI The Imperative for Wholeness Inside Christ For more than a thousand years, Christians have not had the joy of being one family around Christ. Although there were already tensions within the earliest Christian communities, it was not until the year 1054 that there was a formal split so as to, in effect, establish two formal Christian communities, the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church in the West. Then, with the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century, there was a further split within the Western Church and Christianity fragmented still further. Today there are more than a hundred Christian denominations, many of them, sadly, not on friendly terms with each other. Division and misunderstanding are understandable, inevitable, the price of being human. There are no communities without tension and so it s no great scandal that Christians sometimes cannot get along with each other. The scandal is rather that we have become comfortable, even smug, about not getting along with each other. The scandal is that we no longer hunger for wholeness and that we no longer miss each other inside our separate churches. In virtually all of our churches today there is too little anxiety about those who are not worshipping with us, whether these separated brothers and sisters belong to other denominations or whether they belong to our own. For instance, teaching Roman Catholic seminarians today, I sense a certain indifference to the issue of ecumenism. For many seminarians today this is not an issue that is of particular concern to them. Sad to say, this holds true for most Christians in all denominations. But this kind of indifference is inherently unchristian. Oneness was close to the heart of Jesus. He wants all his children at the same table, as we see in this parable in the Gospels: A woman had ten coins and lost one. She became extremely anxious and agitated and began to search frantically and relentlessly for the lost coin, lighting lamps, looking under tables, and sweeping all the floors in her house. Eventually she found the coin. She was delirious with joy, called together her neighbors and threw a party whose cost far exceeded the value of the coin she had lost. (Luke 15, 8-9) Why such anxiety and such joy over the loss and the finding of a coin whose value was that of a dime? The answer lies in the symbolism: In her culture, nine was not a whole number; ten was. Both the woman s anxiety on losing the coin and her joy in finding it had little to do with the value of the coin but with the value of wholeness; an important wholeness in her life had been fractured, a precious set of things was no longer complete. Hence the parable might recast this way: A woman had ten children. With nine of them, she had a good relationship, but one of her daughters was alienated. Her nine other children came regularly to the family table, but this daughter did not. The woman could not rest in that situation; she needed her alienated daughter to rejoin them. She tried every means to reconcile with her daughter and, one day, miracle of miracles, it worked. Her daughter came back to the family. Her family was whole again, everyone was back at table. The woman was overjoyed, withdrew her modest savings from the bank, and threw a lavish party to celebrate that wholeness. Christian faith demands that, like that woman, we need to be anxious, dis-eased, lighting lamps and searching, until the Church is whole again. Nine is not a whole number. Neither is the number of those who are normally inside our respective churches. Roman Catholicism isn t a whole number. Protestantism isn t a whole number. The Evangelical Churches aren t a whole number. The Orthodox Churches aren t a whole number. No one Christian denomination is a whole number. Together we make up a whole number. Thus we are meant to ask ourselves uncomfortable questions: Who no longer goes to church with us? Who feels uncomfortable worshipping with us? Are we comfortable that so many people can no longer join us in our church? Sadly, today, too many of us are comfortable in churches that are far, far from whole. Sometimes, in our less reflective moments, we even rejoice in it: Those others aren t real Christians in any case! We re better off without their kind! There s more peace this way! We are a purer, more faithful, church because of their absence! We re the one true remnant! But this lack of a healthy solicitude for wholeness compromises both our maturity and our following of Jesus. We are mature loving people and true followers of Jesus, only when, like Jesus, we remain in tears over those other sheep that are not of this fold and when, like the woman who lost one of her coins and would not sleep until every corner of the house was turned upside down in a frantic search for what was lost, we too set out solicitously in search of that lost wholeness. 9 ST. HUBERT MINISTRY OF CARE HAVE YOU BEEN THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A MINISTER OF CARE? Purpose of Ministry During a time of failing health, when the need to connect with the faith is at its greatest, people may be too ill to come to Church to receive communion. Ministers of Care are parishioners who bring the Eucharist to patients in the hospital, nursing homes, and homebound parishioners. Ministers of Care help individuals nurture their spiritual lives when their physical well-being is compromised and they need to maintain a connection with their Catholic community. Who can be a Minister of Care? Ministers of Care are compassionate men and women who are the link between the person unable to participate in the weekly liturgy and the worshipping body of the Church. Ministers of Care are also Eucharistic Ministers and are registered members of the parish who are in full communion with the Church. They regularly participate in parish worship life, especially Mass and the sacraments. Ministers of Care have a deep devotion to the Holy Eucharist and are open to sharing prayer and faith with the sick, and willing to undertake prerequisite initial training for the ministry. They are also committed to attending Ministry of Care Enrichment Days. Benefits This ministry is a unique opportunity to serve others and to witness the faith to those in need or crisis. Ministers of Care act as an extension of the Eucharistic table, enriching their own experience of the sacrament through witnessing the power of the Eucharist with people in great need of spiritual nourishment. How does one become a Minister of Care? 1. Contact the Coordinator of Ministry of Care for an interview. 2. Attend the basic training sessions. 3. Be commissioned for this ministry by the diocese and the parish. 4. Choose a particular type of care ministry 5. Finally, you will apprentice with an experienced minister, by visiting a homebound person. Basic 2 Week Training for Ministers of Care Will be held at St. James Parish 820 N. Arlington Heights Road Arlington Heights on two Saturdays, October 8 th & and October 15 th from 8:30 AM 3:00 PM There is no cost to attend these sessions. If you are interested, or if you want to explore whether this ministry is for you, please contact Marie Staffa at or mstaffa@sainthubert.org. We want to get everyone interested in this ministry interviewed and registered for this fall program by September 28. Your spiritually adopted baby was born this month nine months after her mother conceived her. The only change at birth is a change in the external life support system of the baby. She is no different now than she was before birth except that she breathes and eats differently. She is truly a miracle. She began as a 46- chromosome cell and has grown over the past nine months into this unique human baby we now can see. Never before in history, nor ever again, will anyone exist who is exactly like your spiritually adopted baby. Your prayers saved her life. Thank you on behalf of all of the little babies and their parents for your loving prayers that helped to bring them to birth so that they might have life and have it to the full! In conclusion to our Spiritual Adoption Program begun nine months ago, the St. Hubert Respect Life Ministry presents a Baby Shower with Pro-Life Speaker Sunday, September 11 (after the 10:45 Mass) In the Lower Level of the Church In kind donations, such as diapers, formula, and clothing will be accepted, as well as monetary gifts. Light refreshments will be provided.
