1 Christ the King Catholic Community A Roman Catholic Parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas 4925 S. Torrey Pines Dr, Las Vegas NV; ~ (702) ~ Fax: (702) Twenty-Ninth Sunday In Ordinary Time ~ October 22, 2017 Today s Readings First Reading The L said to Cyrus, his anointed, I am the L, there is no other (Isaiah 45:1, 4-6). Psalm Give the Lord glory and honor (Psalm 96). Second Reading Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians: We thank God always for all of you (1 Thessalonians 1:1-5b). Gospel Give to Caesar what is Caesar s, and to God what is God s (Matthew 22:15-21). MASS TIMES SATURDAY: 4:00 pm SUNDAY: 7:30, 9:30,11:30 am, 1:30 pm (Misa en Español) 3:30 pm POWER STRUGGLE Power struggles occur on every level of society, from the world stage to relationships at work, to our own homes. We struggle for position in the hierarchy of power: Who has power over whom? How do they wield it? What is the source of that power? What is the healthy response? In this Sunday s Gospel reading the Pharisees engage Jesus in a power struggle over whether Jews should show tribute to Caesar by paying taxes. Jesus response puts this and every struggle for power into perspective. In harmony with the words of Isaiah and Paul, Jesus teaches us that God is the ultimate source of all power the power of earthly rulers, the Pharisees, Jesus, the Church, and the power within ourselves. 3 A WORD FROM FR. RAY My dear friends, Just a reminder that Wednesday, November 1 st is the Feast of All Saints. This is a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses will offered on Wednesday, November 1 st at 8:00 am and again at 7:00 pm. The regular Sunday Mass schedule will not change, and a special Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day) with a special Liturgy will also be celebrated in the month of November. Our annual Memorial Room will be available in the chapel to memorialize our loved ones; more details for the memorial Liturgy and Memorial Room to be announced. Sunday November 5, 2017 ends Daylight Savings Time at 2:00 am. Be sure to keep mark your calendars accordingly. The Gift shop is still in need of volunteers. Please help us out if you can, especially after the weekend Masses. We would like to add more inventory, but cannot as we simply need to keep some regular hours to sell items. We depend on the sales in order to purchase more inventory. Think about helping us out in this effort so that we can offer our parishioners this convenience. Please leave your name at the office reception desk and telephone number and a good time to call you back. Thanks for your support in this effort. Father Ray EVERY THURSDAY from 8:30 until 10:00 am in the Daily Chapel Join us for Coffee and Donuts in the Community Center after all masses! The Christian population in Bethlehem has dwindled from a majority to under 12 percent and they face continued incredible pressure from all sides. Please join us to view the award winning and critically acclaimed film, Open Bethlehem, and to meet the film maker and director, Leila Sansour, as she openly discusses this crisis and what we as followers of Christ are called to do in the face of this situation. THOUGHTS ABOUT OCTOBER 1, 2017 by Fr. Max Dear friends, I have been in Las Vegas since Saturday, September 30th, the first time back since I moved to Spokane, Washington. On Monday morning, like everyone else in this beautiful valley, I awakened to the terrible news of the horrific shooting at the Country Music Festival. I wrote the following reflections on Monday and Tuesday and shared them at two venues on Wednesday. These thoughts have helped me to try and make sense of what happened from the focus of our faith. Hopefully, they will help you too. Monday morning found me: in shock (I still am); in disbelief - this can t be real! - angry at the senselessness of it; and grieving for the victims and their families. Why, I asked myself, did this happen? I felt relief that I was safe and my friends who might have attended the concert were too. I prayed for those who were killed or injured and for their families. I said prayers of gratitude for the first responders who saved countless lives by their quick thinking and amazing bravery: the police, the Mandalay Bay security guard who pinpointed where the shooting was coming from, the firefighters, the ambulance drivers, and ordinary men and women in vans and pickups who, heroically, took the wounded to hospitals. The doctors and nurses who worked tirelessly and for hours tending to the injured came to mind as well as those who gave blood even though for some it meant standing in line for hours. And the Vigils. All over the Vegas Valley. In churches, on street corners, and in other venues. A good friend and I attended the Vigil at Guardian Angel Cathedral, on Monday evening, where members of the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim faith communities came together in a show of unity and deep-felt prayer. Can I pray for the shooter? I asked myself. I am not there yet. Will I ever be? And now I find myself reflecting on how life is gain and loss, grace, and pain. Okay, I can deal with that. Some things are predictable: I will gradually and eventually lose my good health; I will at some time leave this world. I am okay with predictability, it s the unpredictable events that throw me: 9/11, Columbine, Mandalay Bay on Sunday evening. I receive some comfort in hearing of the heroism of those who responded to the tragedy selflessly and courageously. But, where is God in all of this?! I ask myself. A passage from a favorite book that my mother read, daily, when she suffered from cancer - Abandonment to Divine Providence - came to mind: We are troubled and disturbed yet nevertheless in our depths we have some unseen anchor that keeps us clinging to God. That unseen anchor is our faith. It is the kind of faith that says: I believe you are a God who loves us, help our unbelief. It s the kind of faith the people of Las Vegas will need in the days of healing ahead. On Wednesday morning, the day of my two presentations, a friend of mine here sent me an suggesting I take a look at the First Letter of Peter, Chapter One, Verse Seven. This is an edited rendition of it: In the knowledge of God s great mercy we rejoice even if now, for a little while, we have to suffer various trials so that the genuineness of our faith - being more precious than gold - though perishable, is tested by fire. This is our test. The people of the Vegas Valley are being tested in the furnace of adversity (Isaiah 48:10). But Las Vegans are resilient people. They have been tested before, though not in this horrific way. Healing will happen in time. Their faith will deepen. They will come out of this trial much stronger. They will get through this ordeal together, with God s help. Fr. Max

7 LITURGY CORNER Hello fellow Brothers and Sisters, What is Liturgy? Anything that we do in worship of the Lord publicly in our Church. This includes our rites, rituals, sacraments, ceremonies and prayers. This is not private devotion but communal prayer. It is my honor to formally introduce myself. I am Ellen Cabaluna- Lerum, your Liturgical Director. A little background. I have my Bachelors in Vocal Performance and Songwriting from Berklee College of Music in Boston. I have two Certificates in Liturgy from St. John s Abbey, Liturgy in an Informed Environment and the Diocese of Las Vegas. I am currently studying for my Masters in Christian Ministry at Grand Canyon University and hope to graduate in October Since I ve joined the staff at Christ the King a little over three years ago, it has been such a pleasure getting to know our community and working with all of our ministries. Recently we have put together our Liturgical Committee, which consists of all heads of ministries, long time members of the church and represents of every aspect of our diverse community. This section of our bulletin will be designated as our Liturgical Corner. This will be where we communicate with our community about any points of interest concerning our Liturgies and our worship space. Beginning with our new liturgical year, we will be introducing some changes here at Christ the King. We want everyone to be prepared for any changes that will be taking place so that you too can stay informed and have a complete understanding as to how the changes are meant to impact our community. Please note that our committee speaks at length as to why certain changes are integrated and these changes are only put in place so that our community can receive the highest quality liturgy possible. We want our signs and symbols to have the fullest weight and meaning so that we can all come to the table of the Lord and be fully fed at every liturgy. I ask that you keep our Liturgical Committee in your prayers as we open our hearts and minds to serve our community to the best of our abilities through our Lord Jesus Christ, with the help of the Holy Spirit, and in honor and praise of God our Father. Many blessings and once again it is an honor to serve you. Empezando nuestro Ano Liturgico, vamos a tener nuevos cambios aqui en Christ the King.
