Baptism class is held the third Thursday of each month at 6:00pm. This can be done at least seven (7) months before the birth in order to make proper sacramental preparations. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE Diocesan policy requires a minimum of six (6) months of sacramental preparations for marriage. Engaged couples are invited to call the Pastor for an appointment. HOLY COMMUNION OR ANOINTING OF THE SICK Please call the Pastor if you or any family members are ill or plan to be hospitalized to arrange the reception of the Sacraments. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS - Catechumenate Those interested in becoming a Catholic or in completing their initiation are invited to contact Deacon Keith Hebert at the Church office to learn more about the Catechumenate Process. 2 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time November 4, 2018.GOD S LAWS God s laws are not intended to burden or torment us. Instead they are guideposts that point us in the direction of good living. Accordingly, good living requires loving God and loving one another. We should not follow God s laws out of fear of what might happen if we don t, but rather view them as a foundation for building relationships and trust with one another and with God. The Shema prayer of Orthodox Jews is based on the reading from Deuteronomy today, Hear, O Israel. Every morning people recite the prayer as a profession of their love for God and pledge their obedience to God throughout the day. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Just two years ago, we engaged in one of the core activities of our democratic system: a presidential election. Actually, the institution of election can be traced to traditions in the Church, and although bishops are no longer chosen in this way, abbots and abbesses (heads of monastic communities) have almost always been elected by full voting members of their communities. The lifetime appointment begins when the monks or nuns are gathered in chapter at the death or resignation of the abbot, and fortunately for all involved, campaigning is not allowed! The members of the community discern, with prayer to the Holy Spirit, who among them is the best suited for leadership. Once chosen, the new leader requests the blessing of the local bishop, who usually presides at a ceremony of consecration or investiture. The ballots are always secret, and a simple majority must be achieved. In our American system the Electoral College is the determining voice in the presidential election, not the popular election on a November Tuesday, just as the monastic chapter is the electorate. Today, most religious orders elect general superiors in chapter by delegates of the professed members, and usually for a term of six years. A few, like the Jesuits, elect for life. During this week, please pray about how God is calling you to live your vocation more deeply. Encourage the young people in your life-children, grandchildren, students, friendsto be open if God calls them to the priesthood or consecrated life. A vocation is a call from God to pursue holiness in a specific way, involving a public and permanent commitment. The Main Catholic Vocations are: Marriage, Priesthood or the Consecrated Life which includes but not limited to the Franciscans, Benedictines, Dominicans, etc.

4 The Supreme Knight Carl Anderson has asked for a novena of Masses to be offered in reparation for sins committed by clergy following new revelations of sexual abuse, and for the healing of victims. Knights of Columbus will help renew our Church on a national level through a Novena of Masses in reparation for these sins that have so grievously wounded the Body of Christ, he wrote. I take this opportunity to ask that you offer this Novena of Masses for our Church at your earliest opportunity. -Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight. Joined with the Mass intention for the People of the Parish, we will include praying in reparation of sins that have wounded the Body of Christ beginning this weekend for 9 weekends to complete the Novena. Orange Christian Services Christmas Food Bags and Christmas Toys OCS is issuing a plea for help. Please consider a monetary donation to help a family have a better Christmas. Orange Christian Services can obtain many of these food items from the SE TX Food Bank at.16 per pound so monetary donations will help the most. $25 will include a turkey and all the fixings. Last year, OCS helped 519 families. We will have a second collection for Orange Christian Services next weekend November Christmas tags will be coming soon. They will be due December 15/16 If anyone is still in need of assistance from damages incurred as a result of Hurricane Harvey Flooding, Disaster Services Corporation of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is providing case management to assist in getting help for various needs. Anyone in the 3rd grade or higher may participate. Ushers-be a greeter to all who walk in the doors of St. Francis, help with the collections, and assist in leading out the pews for Holy Communion. Choir-Come share your musical talents! When you sing, you pray twice. Who doesn t need double prayers. Religious Education volunteers-sign up to volunteer with the youth to share your Faith with the future of our Catholic Church. Knights of Columbus-a fraternal organization open to men of 18 and older who are committed to making their community a better place, while supporting their church.
