2 Stewardship Corner ~ Jesus demonstrates to us that being busy is no reason not to pray; instead it is a reason to pray. Jesus always found time and made time to pray. We need to do the same. A consistent and regular prayer life is an important way we live out our stewardship of time. The Lord prayed not because of helplessness but because of the power He gained from prayer. Jesus knew the value of public prayer, but He also knew and experienced the joy of praying alone. Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. He provides to us the perfect example of both how we should pray and in what ways. Prayer is at the foundation of our faith; it is at the core of a stewardship way of life. Developing an ongoing, consistent, and active prayer life is paramount for each of us. Prayer not only indicates our constant awareness of God, but it enhances our lives, and is an indication of our total trust in God. Trust in God is also an important facet of stewardship. Lent will soon be here. If we make one change in our lives, perhaps it should be to intensify and increase our own prayer lives. The General Secretary of the Synod of Bishops, following a practice that typically anticipates every Synod, invites consultation on this topic to assist with its preparations. A Preparatory Document has been issued by the Holy See to initiate this consultation along with a series of questions. Archbishop Chaput, in an effort to provide an opportunity for the clergy and faithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to engage in this consultation in as wide a manner as possible has authorized the use of this instrument for local participation. The clergy and faithful are asked to read the complete Preparatory Document, or its summary, on the archdiocesan website and then answer any or all of the questions that follow by visiting Living Stations 2015 It s that time again. Time to think about how we are going to spend our Season of Lent preparing for the Resurrection of our Lord. As parents, we are also responsible for preparing our children, and this can prove to be a tricky task sometimes, especially when we are dealing with middle and high school age children. Please consider encouraging your children to become involved in Sacred Heart s annual production of the Living Stations of the Cross. We meet on the Thursdays during Lent in the church from 7:00 to 8:30 PM, and we perform the Stations on Good Friday evening (April 3rd) at 7:00 PM. We are asking for parish children in grades 5 through 12 who like to act, read, sing or help with behind the scenes. We will start with an organizational meeting on Thursday, February 19th, at 7:00 PM in the church where we will assign parts and hand out a practice schedule. In the past, we have been able to produce a beautifully reverent, prayerful program. It is a wonderful service project to work on during Lent, and it is a beautiful gift to give to the parishioners of Sacred Heart. Fast and Abstinence and Other Acts of Penance for Lent The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2015, and on all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. All the faithful are encouraged, when possible, to participate at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten education programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended. Cap., Chairman of the United States Bishops' Committee on Pro-Life Activities, urged support for the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36). He cited that the 2013 conviction of Philadelphia's Dr. Kermit Gosnell for crimes committed while providing abortions has, "led many Americans to realize that our permissive laws and attitudes have allowed the abortion industry to undertake these procedures." He added that, "these procedures after the middle point of pregnancy also pose serious dangers to women - as evidenced by Dr. Gosnell's own manslaughter conviction for one woman's death, and news about the death or serious complications of other women undergoing such procedures." Cardinal O'Malley urged Congress to support the common-sense reform offered by H.R. 36 and to oppose all weakening amendments. The gym was decorated as a Winter Wonderland and guests were treated to dinner, refreshments, a desert bar and dancing. At Sacred Heart School We Believe our purpose is to. 6 Sacred Heart s Centennial Celebration Plans are underway to celebrate Sacred Heart s Centennial Celebration. Consider lending your time and talents to the Centennial Committee as plans are in the making to kick off a year long celebration starting on Saturday evening, June 6 th, 2015, and continuing thru out the year until the closing in June Sacred Heart s official anniversary is June 15, Consider being part of the heart, as our committee seeks volunteers that are willing to lend their time and talent and treasures. We need a wide spectrum of expertise to make this a celebration to remember. Sacred Heart s Collectable Christmas Ornament Sacred Heart s Centennial Committee will be selling a collectable 2014 Christmas ornament that highlights the original Sacred Heart Church on Broad Street in Oxford. The ornament depicts the Sacred Heart of old. There is a limited number of the keepsake ornaments offered. The cost of the glass Christmas ball is $12 each and will be available after Mass by a Centennial Committee member. We will also be taking pre-orders on a tapestry that will depict the old Sacred Heart Church, the current Sacred Heart Church and the school.
