1 Sacred Heart Parish 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will have the light of life. Today s Readings: 1st Reading - Isaiah 58:7-10 2nd Reading - 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Gospel - Matthew 5:13-16 February 9,

2 Stewardship Corner ~ This week s Gospel appears right after the teachings in Holy Scripture of the Beatitudes, Blessed are the poor in Spirit...those who hunger...blessed are the merciful... Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:13-16 that we must be a light for the world, we must show others how to glorify God by our witness in good deeds. The first reading from Isaiah tells us how we can each be a light: by removing malicious words and false accusations, by giving to those in need, and by selflessly fighting for those afflicted with injustices and improper treatment. By doing these things, we witness to others what it means to be Christian, and what it means to be a light for the world. Jesus says, You are the light of the world your light must shine before others. From a stewardship perspective, we are growing in discipleship and in evangelization by loving others and reaching out to those in need. We enrich their lives (like the salt Jesus refers to in this week s Gospel) and we also bring them joy and understanding in a world that can sometimes seem dark and lonely (by being a light). When we take these opportunities, we find that the spirit we provide to others is returned by God, and we also find life brighter, more positive, and more fulfilling. Your good deeds glorify your Heavenly Father. (Matthew 5:16) What opportunities have we had in the past that might have slipped by? How can we keep an eye out for them in the future? If we plan to be intentional about shining our light for others, we can certainly illuminate the world. Let us be the lights that God intended us to be! See more at: Peace, Kaitlyn Wiant, Parish Services Director Faith by Numbers 675 # of parishioners who made faith commitments in January # of seconds it takes to pray the Our Father percent of American Catholics who pray daily:58 Approximate number of Catholics in the world: 1,200,000,000 Faith, received from God as a supernatural gift, becomes a light for our way, guiding our journey through time. On the one hand, it is a light coming from the past, the light of the foundational memory of the life of Jesus which revealed his perfectly trustworthy love, a love capable of triumphing over death. -Lumen Fidei (The Light of Faith Our Mass Book for 2015 is now open. If you would like to have a Mass intention reserved, please stop by the information desk in the Narthex or contact our Parish Office during office hours, Monday- Thursday, 8:30-4:30. 3 Is your child preparing for First Reconciliation and First Communion? First Communion this year will be celebrated on Saturday, May 3rd. If your child is preparing to receive this sacrament at Sacred Heart, and is not in PREP or Sacred Heart School, please contact Tara McCrorey, (610) ext. 2 as soon as possible. Lead Me to the Cross...where Your Love poured out. The groundhog may have called for 6 more weeks of winter, but I, for one, am looking forward to spring! However, before we enjoy the beautiful Easter lilies, we will all find ways to prepare ourselves for the holiest week of the liturgical year - ways to lead us to the cross. Some will give something up, and some will add a new layer to their faith commitment by trying to add more prayer time to their busy lives or to make a more conscious effort to serve others. Young and old will experience the feeling of sacrifice evolving into spiritual re-birth. One great way for middle and high-schoolers to prepare themselves for the Easter season is to become involved with the Living Stations Program produced here at Sacred Heart on Good Friday evening. This year s program will take place on Friday, April 18, 2014 at 7:00 PM in the church. Preparations begin on Thursday, March 6th, and continue through the Thursdays in Lent - excluding Holy Thursday. Meetings are held in the church from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. We are in need of pantomime actors, lectors and singers. Spring time schedules can often be a challenge, but we try to work around them as much as possible. Please consider joining us in producing a beautiful, reverent program depicting Our Lord s journey to the cross. If you have any questions, please contact Amy Murphy at or murphydna@verizon.net. How can you share Christ s love in the Oxford community? Aid for Friends, a program bringing food and companionship to local home-bound persons, is in need of volunteer visitors. Currently, we have four clients in need of visitors for one hour, once a week. We can promise you one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. Our volunteer visitors see the same client every week. They really get to know each other; forming a true and caring relationship. Some of our friends say it is one of the best friendships they ve ever had some volunteer visitors say the same thing. If you think you can spare an hour a week to make a tremendous difference in the life of a friend near you, please contact Dana Felder at or aff@sacredheart.us. He became my best friend. -Sacred Heart volunteer about her experience visiting with Aid for Friends Life in the Spirit Seminar This is an open invitation to all who are interested in learning more about the Holy Spirit and His gifts.
