Thank you for your cooperation. BAPTISM: Communal celebrations of Baptism take place on the first and third Sundays at 2:00 PM. To arrange a Baptism, please call the Rectory. A Baptismal Instruction Session is required before the Baptism. Because Godparents play an important role in the child s Christian life and education, Godparents must be practicing Catholics who have been confirmed, are at least 14 years of age and, if married, must be in a marriage recognized by the Catholic Church. If there is a question about the suitability of someone to be a Godparent, please call the Rectory before asking the person to be a Godparent. RECONCILIATION: The Sacrament of Penance takes place on Saturdays and on the day before First Fridays from 4:00 to 5:00 PM. At other times, the person should make the request directly to a priest. MARRIAGE: Engaged couples should contact the Rectory at least six months in advance. Diocesan regulations require a marriage preparation program for all couples. MINISTRY TO THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND: If a parishioner is in the hospital or homebound, please contact the Rectory. Arrangements can be made for the person to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Also, Holy Communion can be brought to our homebound parishioners. Please remember Sacred Heart Church and Sacred Heart School in your Estate Planning. Once you have registered and continue to participate by attending Mass and receiving the Eucharist regularly; you will find it helpful for the enrollment of children in the Religious Education Program, and obtain the necessary documents to become a Godparent or a sponsor for Confirmation. The St. Vincent de Paul Society will once again be collecting hygiene products as part of their parish outreach to the poor. They are requesting shampoo, toothpaste, bars of soap and deodorant. Containers will be available at the doors of the church for your donations. This outreach will continue throughout the summer. Thank you for your continued generosity.

5 August 2, 2015 Page 4 40 Days for Life September 23 - November 1, 2015 This fall s 40 Days for Life campaign will be held September 23 - November 1, Days for Life is a peaceful, highly-focused, non-denominational initiative that focuses on 40 days of prayer and fasting, peaceful vigil at abortion facilities, and educational outreach with the goal of protecting mothers and their children from abortion. Since 2007 at least 10,331 unborn children have been saved from abortion during 40 Days for Life campaigns, and 60 abortions facilities have closed. It is an introduction to the Bible Timeline: a chronological presentation of the key people and events in the Bible, divided into time periods. The program is a DVD series of eight, half-hour talks by Jeff Cavins, which conveys the story of salvation history, that unlock the meaning of our faith. 6 August 2, 2015 EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME Page 5 GOD S WORK We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God? We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged fulltime in works formally identified as being God s work. But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God s work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is God s work? Sometimes practices are almost forced on engaged couples. Anyone who has ever planned a wedding knows how quickly the invoices expand. A hundred dollars here, a hundred there, often for nonessentials, when more deeply traditional practices, like an expression of charity for the poor, fall by the wayside. One such practice often labeled as deeply traditional is the aisle runner for the bride. Actually, the American tradition is to clean our church buildings, in contrast to European village churches, which often had dirt or cobblestone floors. There, a band of linen (rented) or a carpet of flowers might be set in place for a bridal party. Here, plastic rollups are procured and positioned by the ushers for the bride s entrance. The problems are many, not the least of which is that there is no bride s entrance in our official liturgy. Another is that in a wedding Mass, the communicants have to navigate the treacherous aisle with the sometimes-slippery runner. The aisle runner is neither a treasure nor a tradition, and by omitting it, the couple who asks for canned goods for the poor to be brought to church at their wedding Mass will find an extra hundred dollars or so for the cause!
