Thank you for your cooperation. BAPTISM: Communal celebrations of Baptism take place on the first and third Sundays at 2:00 PM. To arrange a Baptism, please call the Rectory. A Baptismal Instruction Session is required before the Baptism. Because Godparents play an important role in the child s Christian life and education, Godparents must be practicing Catholics who have been confirmed, are at least 14 years of age and, if married, must be in a marriage recognized by the Catholic Church. If there is a question about the suitability of someone to be a Godparent, please call the Rectory before asking the person to be a Godparent. RECONCILIATION: The Sacrament of Penance takes place on Saturdays from 4:00 to 4:45 PM. At other times, the person should make the request directly to a priest. MARRIAGE: Engaged couples should contact the Rectory at least six months in advance. Diocesan regulations require a marriage preparation program for all couples. MINISTRY TO THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND: If a parishioner is in the hospital or homebound, please contact the Rectory. Arrangements can be made for the person to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Also, Holy Communion can be brought to our homebound parishioners. PARISHIONER REGISTRATION Parishioner registration is important to the parish as well as the parishioner. All parishioners are encouraged to register. Once you have registered and continue to participate by attending Mass and receiving the Eucharist regularly; you will find it helpful for the enrollment of children in the Religious Education Program, and to obtain the necessary documents to become a Godparent or a sponsor for Confirmation. If you would like to register please stop by the rectory during regular business hours. Monday thru Friday 9am to 4pm. If you are presently receiving envelopes and would like them discontinued please call the rectory and we will assist you. ( ). KEEPING UP WITH EXPENSES The parish effort to closely manage day to day expenses continues. However, expenses such as utilities, property insurance and our archdiocesan assessment for central services (in some months totaling as much as $15,000) put a strain on our ability to keep current with all expenses. Our objective is to achieve that goal without any assistance from the Archdiocese. The continued generosity of every parishioner and increased giving whenever possible will make that possible. News In our parish, the process known as the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is available to anyone who would like to have the opportunity to learn about the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. The process is open to any adult who is unbaptized, or a member of a denomination other than the Catholic Church, or a baptized Catholic who has not completed reception of the Sacraments of Initiation, (Eucharist and/or Confirmation). The formal aspects of the RCIA program will take individuals through various stages of study, prayer, and spiritual formation culminating in baptism (for non- Christians) or full reception into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. If you know a man or woman who has expressed some personal interest in Catholicism please contact the rectory at ( ). Informal introductory sessions will acquaint the inquirer with the RCIA process and will be the first step in their journey of faith. We are in need of the following items: cereal, pancake mix and syrup, box stuffing mix, canned soup, fruits and vegetables, pasta, spaghetti sauce in cans, and tuna. Especially during the summer months we can also use toothpaste, shampoo soap, deodorant and toilet tissue. Thank you for your continued generosity to this program. 6 August 28, 2016 The Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 HUMILITY Have you ever been in a group of people maybe on a tour, at a social gathering, or at church and discovered that you have just been talking with a wellknown author, corporate CEO, great scholar, or politician? Your first thought is the hope that you didn t say anything to embarrass yourself; but your second thought is how much they seemed like such regular folks. What is it that makes people seem so regular? Today s readings give us a clue when they stress the importance of humility. It is so hard for us not to tell the first person who will listen how busy we are, how hard we work, how much money we donate, and how important our job titles are. We think these accolades make a difference to people, and if we don t tell them, how will they ever know? But if our actions demonstrate our values, people will recognize our worth on their own. The words of Jesus show us how much better it is to let someone else recognize our worth than to be embarrassed because someone did not. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. We see the shepherd s staff and immediately rich images from scripture come to mind, as well as the recollection that the first to respond to Christ s presence in our world were the shepherds. The staff is more than a walking stick; its crooked top is useful in snaring errant sheep but also in keeping the flock united. Bishops carry the curve outward, indicating their ministry to the wider flock, while abbots (and some abbesses, too) carry the crosier with the curve pointing in, indicating that their ministry is to the monastery alone. The crosier was once also carried by the pope, but was phased out centuries ago. You may recall that in pre- popemobile days, the pope was often carried around on a portable throne called a sedia gestatoria. Since he didn t do much walking, the need for a crosier was minimal. Pope Paul VI introduced the innovation of a walking staff in the 1960s, and everyone remembers Pope John Paul II s walking staff, not a crook, but a delicately sculptured crucifix. Thus, the pope carries a pastoral staff rather than a crosier. Precisely because the pope s ministry is universal, to the whole world, popes will likely leave crosiers in the hands of the bishops they commission for care of specific flocks. Apostolate of Prayer Father, in your plan of salvation you provide shepherds for your people. Fill your Church with a spirit of courage and love. Raise up worthy ministers to your altars, ardent but gentle servants of the Gospel. To those clergy who have already answered your call, grant joy and perseverance in your service. Amen. Aug 29 Rev.
