A Baptismal Instruction Session is required before the Baptism. Because Godparents play an important role in the child s Christian life and education, Godparents must be practicing Catholics who have been confirmed, are at least 14 years of age and, if married, must be in a marriage recognized by the Catholic Church. If there is a question about the suitability of someone to be a Godparent, please call the Rectory before asking the person to be a Godparent. RECONCILIATION: The Sacrament of Penance takes place on Saturdays from 4:00 to 4:45 PM. At other times, the person should make the request directly to a priest. MARRIAGE: Engaged couples should contact the Rectory at least six months in advance. Diocesan regulations require a marriage preparation program for all couples. MINISTRY TO THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND: If a parishioner is in the hospital or homebound, please contact the Rectory. Arrangements can be made for the person to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Also, Holy Communion can be brought to our homebound parishioners. PARISHIONER REGISTRATION Parishioner registration is important to the parish as well as the parishioner. All parishioners are encouraged to register. Once you have registered and continue to participate by attending Mass and receiving the Eucharist regularly; you will find it helpful for the enrollment of children in the Religious Education Program, and to obtain the necessary documents to become a Godparent or a sponsor for Confirmation. If you would like to register please stop by the rectory during regular business hours. Monday thru Friday 9am to 4pm. If you are presently receiving envelopes and would like them discontinued please call the rectory and we will assist you. ( ). KEEPING UP WITH EXPENSES The parish effort to closely manage day to day expenses continues. However, expenses such as utilities, property insurance and our archdiocesan assessment for central services (in some months totaling as much as $15,000) put a strain on our ability to keep current with all expenses. Our objective is to achieve that goal without any assistance from the Archdiocese. The continued generosity of every parishioner and increased giving whenever possible will make that possible. Thank you for your continued support. SILENCE IS GOLDEN and APPRECIATED Our Eucharistic Community invite you to be FULLY PRESENT during our Mass, we ask that you kindly turn off all electronic devices. Thank you for your cooperation.

Frank Rouleau a volunteer for Outreach to Haiti, who will speak about the present condition of the Haitian people and how Outreach to Haiti is helping with its many programs Outreach to Haiti is a sponsored ministry of the Diocese of Norwich, Ct.. OTH is committed to serve the people of Haiti in the spirit and values of the Gospel by providing sacramental and spiritual support. This is accomplished through education, health care, parish twinning opportunities and community development for Haitians in need and hospitality to international volunteers and visitors. Outreach to Haiti provides scholarships with full school tuition for 300 students. A multifaceted medical program provides both onsite and mobile clinics. Through the twinning programs they are able to support two orphanages and a daily meal for many children. The earthquake in 2010 devastated most of Port-au-Prince including the two buildings that had been accommodating our guests and programs. After 6 years Outreach to Haiti is close to reaching its goal of rebuilding their facilities. We hope that Fr. Rouleau s talk will inspire and inform you of the plight of the Haitian people.

6 September 4, 2016 The Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 INVITED The Good News is that we have all been invited invited to the Kingdom, invited to be disciples. It s a life-changing invitation, and like so many other such invitations, it requires a great deal of deliberation and discernment. Whether we choose marriage, ordination, single life, or community life, we know the serious planning and consideration that accompany these profound decisions. Like the tower-builder in the Gospel, we have weighed both the monetary and emotional cost. We have pondered and planned our lives in the direction to which we believe God has called us. And while we pray for guidance and acceptance of God s will, we often fail to understand so much. Like Solomon, we turn to God for wisdom and counsel in our life -changing decisions. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Who can ever know God s counsel unless God gives wisdom and sends the Holy Spirit from on high? (Wisdom 9:13-18b). Psalm In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge (Psalm 90). Second Reading Paul asks Philemon to accept back his slave Onesimus, not as a slave but as a brother (Philemon 9-10, 12-17). Gospel To be a disciple of Jesus one must carry one s own cross and renounce all possessions (Luke 14:25-33). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 1 Cor 5:1-8; Ps 5:5-7, 12; Lk 6:6-11, or, for Labor Day, any readings from the Mass For the Blessings of Human Labor, nos Tuesday: 1 Cor 6:1-11; Ps 149:1b-6a, 9b; Lk 6:12-19 Wednesday: 1 Cor 7:25-31; Ps 45:11-12, 14-17; Lk 6:20-26 Thursday: Mi 5:1-4a or Rom 8:28-30; Ps 13:6; Mt 1:1-16, [18-23] Friday: 1 Cor 9:16-19, 22b-27; Ps 84:3-6, 12; Lk 6:39-42 Saturday: 1 Cor 10:14-22; Ps 116:12-13, 17-18; Lk 6:43-49 Sunday: Ex 32:7-11, 13-14; Ps 51:3-4, 12-13, 17, 19; 1 Tm 1:12-17; Lk 15:1-32 [1-10]. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sometimes, this Treasures column can seem to be a species of crib-notes for Catholic Jeopardy. Indeed, you may never know when knowledge of our particular vocabulary may come in handy. Such is the case with papal bulls, which conjure up all sorts of images, but are actually not what you might expect. A bull is a papal letter on a matter of great consequence, such as a decision about a crisis in the Church, the declaration of a doctrine, the summoning of a council, or the canonization of a saint. It has a more solemn intention than a mere letter or even an encyclical, a teaching letter circulated through the whole Church. Its odd name comes from the Latin bulla, which is the stamp used to apply a signatorial design to the hot lead, or even molten silver or gold, that seals the decree. The format for the bull is the name of the pope in Latin, followed by the title servant of the servants of God, also in Latin, and then the text. The title of the bull is always the first two words of the text. Some famous papal bulls are Exsurge Domine (Arise, O Lord), written against Martin Luther s Ninety-five Theses in 1520; Munificentissimus Deus (The Most Bountiful God), the promulgation of the dogma of the Assumption in 1950 by Pope Pius XII; or Humanae Salutis (Human Salvation), by which Pope John XXIII convened the Second Vatican Council in Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Co. Apostolate of Prayer Father, in your plan of salvation you provide shepherds for your people. Fill your Church with a spirit of courage and love. Raise up worthy ministers to your altars, ardent but gentle servants of the Gospel. To those clergy who have already answered your call, grant joy and perseverance in your service. Amen.
