Thank you for your cooperation. BAPTISM: Communal celebrations of Baptism take place on the first and third Sundays at 2:00 PM. To arrange a Baptism, please call the Rectory. A Baptismal Instruction Session is required before the Baptism. Because Godparents play an important role in the child s Christian life and education, Godparents must be practicing Catholics who have been confirmed, are at least 14 years of age and, if married, must be in a marriage recognized by the Catholic Church. If there is a question about the suitability of someone to be a Godparent, please call the Rectory before asking the person to be a Godparent. RECONCILIATION: The Sacrament of Penance takes place on Saturdays from 4:00 to 4:45 PM. At other times, the person should make the request directly to a priest. MARRIAGE: Engaged couples should contact the Rectory at least six months in advance. Diocesan regulations require a marriage preparation program for all couples. MINISTRY TO THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND: If a parishioner is in the hospital or homebound, please contact the Rectory. Arrangements can be made for the person to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Also, Holy Communion can be brought to our homebound parishioners. PARISHIONER REGISTRATION Parishioner registration is important to the parish as well as the parishioner. All parishioners are encouraged to register. Once you have registered and continue to participate by attending Mass and receiving the Eucharist regularly; you will find it helpful for the enrollment of children in the Religious Education Program, and to obtain the necessary documents to become a Godparent or a sponsor for Confirmation. If you would like to register please stop by the rectory during regular business hours. Monday thru Friday 9am to 4pm. If you are presently receiving envelopes and would like them discontinued please call the rectory and we will assist you. ( ). KEEPING UP WITH EXPENSES The parish effort to closely manage day to day expenses continues. However, expenses such as utilities, property insurance and our archdiocesan assessment for central services (in some months totaling as much as $15,000) put a strain on our ability to keep current with all expenses. Our objective is to achieve that goal without any assistance from the Archdiocese. The continued generosity of every parishioner and increased giving whenever possible will make that possible. News In our parish, the process known as the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is available to anyone who would like to have the opportunity to learn about the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. The process is open to any adult who is unbaptized, or a member of a denomination other than the Catholic Church, or a baptized Catholic who has not completed reception of the Sacraments of Initiation, (Eucharist and/or Confirmation). The formal aspects of the RCIA program will take individuals through various stages of study, prayer, and spiritual formation culminating in baptism (for non- Christians) or full reception into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. If you know a man or woman who has expressed some personal interest in Catholicism please contact the rectory at ( ). Informal introductory sessions will acquaint the inquirer with the RCIA process and will be the first step in their journey of faith. We are in need of the following items: cereal, pancake mix and syrup, box stuffing mix, canned soup, fruits and vegetables, pasta, spaghetti sauce in cans, and tuna. Especially during the summer months we can also use toothpaste, shampoo soap, deodorant and toilet tissue. Thank you for your continued generosity to this program. 6 August 21, 2016 The Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 DISCIPLINE It is no accident that the words disciple and discipline are nearly identical. Their relationship in Christian faith and life, however, has fallen somewhat out of favor in the past generation, as certain prescribed Church rules and regulations have been reduced and relaxed. These rules were often referred to as disciplines. We are mistaken, however, to think that it no longer takes discipline to follow Christ. The Letter to the Hebrews assures us of that today. Our discipline is more like that of an athlete pursuing a victory or a personal best, or a musician striving for a concert career or to master a new piece of music. This discipline comes from desire, not from regulations. It was the desire to do the will of God that led Jesus on the path to his cross. It is that same desire he encourages in us today: to strive to enter through the narrow gate, to find ourselves in the kingdom with a surprising assortment of people who are there not because of mere observation of rules, but out of a genuine desire to recline at the table of the heavenly banquet. The word comes from the Latin word for a chair with armrests. It is exactly the reason why dining room sets were marketed in this country a few years ago with only one chair with armrests, the captain s chair. In many rectories of a certain vintage, you will see only one chair with arms at the dining table, a sign to the assisting priests of their proper place in the constellation. For us, as with most Anglicans and some Lutherans, the cathedra is a sign of the teaching authority of the bishop. We inherited the symbolism of the chair from Roman civil life in the fourth century. A church that houses a cathedra is called a cathedral, and the chair may be used only by the bishop of that diocese. Priests who preside at liturgy there must use a different presidential chair. You may find the cathedra in its most traditional place at the head of the apse, or against a side wall as was favored in medieval times, but increasingly bishops are locating the cathedra in the midst of the assembly of the faithful. In the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, visitors will find no barrier to their trying out the cathedra, an expression of hospitality that helps the archbishop be mindful of those whom he serves.
